Consider: Dorme being quietly in love with Padme from the sidelines. Always being there for her, always offering herself up as a friend and companion, but never, never making any romantic advances because that would be inappropriate and a breach of her duties.
But still she hopes. She hopes. She brushes Padme’s hair at night lovingly and tells her when she looks particularly stunning, listens when she needs someone to talk to and smiles whenever she can tell Padme needs it. She lets her hand brush Padme’s every once in a while and she hopes.
And then Padme comes home after the battle on Geonosis a married woman and all those hopes come crashing down.
(But she will still do her duty. She will still serve Padme, will die for Padme if it’s necessary. Will still be, will ALWAYS be her friend. And no one has to know that whenever Padme smiles fleetingly at Anakin in the corridor of the Senate building, that whenever Anakin comes home to Padme’s apartment for a couple days or finds his way into Padme’s bed, that Dorme’s heart is breaking.)
