Yeah, I really hate the design and the trans rep being taken away. I did some more research on it and it got released in 2012 at the Tezuka museum it got 2 volumes, by Go Nagi, who got permission from Tezuka’s son to use Dororo. I think the series is probably not canon, it was probably just just for fun or something like that. Secondly there weren’t many scans around but the one I saw was Dororo getting raped by a sex demon, like that’s not ok. So I think it’s not canon.

I’m not familiar with it but from a quick google search, it seems to be not recent and not done by tezuka himself? so I can’t comment much on it, but dororo’s outfit is. atrocious, both from what looks like taking away trans rep and also just pure design and (attempted) historical accuracy

Transphobic Dororo fans: Dororo isn’t trans! It’s just a disguise because her parents thought she would be safer that way. It was more clear in the manga.

Dororo in the manga:

Literally the only line in the manga to suggest that it’s a disguise of some sort is Hyakkimaru guessing that it might have been so he would grow up tough but Dororo clearly denies that. It doesn’t matter if he started identifying as a boy because his parents raised him as one for whatever reason, he still identifies as a boy and should be referred to as such.

Something I noticed- the most common arguments that Dororo is a girl are usually “Dororo’s parents raised her as a boy on purpose” or “Dororo doesn’t know she’s a girl”, but in the manga where these arguments are present they’re all presented by other characters, not Dororo.

Hyakkimaru even says “maybe” here, he’s only guessing. And in both of these scenes, Dororo responds with an angry confirmation that he’s a boy. In none of Dororo’s flashbacks do we see his parents specifically telling him to be a boy.

The 2007 movie, however, does has a scene where Ojiya specifically tells Dororo he needs to be a man. 

Dororo can only cry and by extension become a woman once he’s met a man like his father. By the end of the movie, Dororo has both met Hyakkimaru and cried. However:

He’s still a man, and Hyakkimaru confirms his feelings. He freely cries without changing his gender identity, subverting the universe’s logic that he must become a woman when he cries. 

Dororo is a boy, despite the arguments that he was simply told to be one by his parents.
