Thank you to everyone who commented in their tags or messaged me. Indeed, today is “Martin and Bosco Day”. I originally whimsically blazed this photo on 13 July 2022. I never expected Martin and Bosco to travel so far and make so many new friends. The experience has been such a gift for me.

I'm reading the chapter in guardians of ga'hoole book 2 with the puffins. and I've been thinking damn this doesn't line up with much at all that I know about puffins, and I know a lot more than the average person. the basic rundown is that puffins in real life live in colonies in the summer for mating season and then just go fuck off into the ocean for 8 months of the year.

in chapter 6 of the journey the band ends up staying with a family of puffins, who live in their crack in the ice all the time. the dad puffin says some shit like yeah this is the only home we've ever known. and a lot of times in these books kathryn lasky makes a lot more of an effort to at least use what we know about animal species to create this world—obviously it's mostly just inspiration, but it's been so much more accurate so far.

so I was like what's going on. and then I had a thought and looked at the beginning of the book for the year it was published—2003. which, after a quick google search to confirm my suspicions, is before scientists found out where puffins go in the winter. because something else I learned about puffins on my deep dive a year or two ago was that for a long time nobody knew. it took the employment of some geolocators for us to eventually—around 2010, I've just discovered—find out that they just shed their flashy beaks, jump into the ocean, and sleep on the waves for 8 goddamn months at a time.

so kathryn lasky in the early aughts was doing everything she could with what she had😭😭😭 there wasn't much to go on; she must have decided she wanted to use puffins for this chapter because they look so stupid, realized there's a big ass hole in their known behavior patterns, and thought damn there's nothing I can do with this shit. I've got to start over. and ended up here. holy FUCK guys. holy shit
