good morning style savvy tumblr. today the dark skintone of styling star started distracting me so much i made a TEXTURE MOD. enjoy these screenshots
big rambling below on why and how i did this!
(ps.: this post is abt an edit of the 2nd darkest skintone of the game bcuz it's the one hannah/my boutique manager uses and it's easier for me to extract its texture and test in game)
honestly the problem that i have isn't even that all the really dark skin options are ashy. sadly thats what i expect from most games released in the 2010s. what actually bothered me the most is that this skintone is GREYISH OLIVE and the shadows are just. REDDER and more saturated?? they are BARELY darker than the skin itself like HELLO????? WHO IS CHOOSING THIS SHADER??
the other style savvy games games also have desaturated dark skintones, but they're not as distracting because the shadows aren't SO SATURATED...
then it also doesn't help that i choose hannah as my assistant, because every time i looked at her i asked myself "why the hell did they choose that color combo for the dark skintones" and that was like legitimately so distracting 😭 specially playing the game scaled up... i couldn't look at her without repeatedly noticing that
sooo i did what someone with infinite free time would do and immediately went looking for the textures so i could see if i could change them !!!
i've done texture editing before (to add my friend's fursona as a dog in tomodachi life [yes that's a sentence i just wrote]) so it was pretty easy to do it again. i dumped the textures, grabbed whatever looked like skintones, changed them to a random color to see if they'd show up and voilá, on my second try i'm now blue ba da bee ba da baa
this has also taught me that i cannot change the skin shadow color like this (that's expected) BUT. if you're paying attention. you will see that her eyeshadow does not fade to blue. that is because they actually have a different texture for every eyeshadow in every skintone. which means that drastically altering the skintones will make eyeshadow look bad, unless you manually correct every single texture (which im not insane enough to do so)
also, the guys use different skin and body textures (that's also expected) i tried altering the 2nd darkest and the darkest skintone but they ended up kind of botched💔
the first one i accidentally didn't alter the face texture and the other one his lips are weirdly desaturated but imo he did look pretty good (...does that mean men have makeup too in this game???)
