okay but yes let's say misa amane finally thought about leaving that guy that was so obviously horrible for her. What else would there be to do but to live a mindless life of disgustingly overly frilled dresses, scantly-clad photoshoots, and drinks with men you don't like but must impress? Where would you go but an empty house? What else is someone supposed to do when they meet their savior but worship? Does a God have to be kind to someone as insignificant as you? Who are you to critique God, when He's the one who helped you when the world couldn't? Who are you but an orphaned 20 something who's never been much but pretty? How can you reject a God when He sees greatness inside you? (Even if you can still recognize that look men give you when they don't actually plan on staying long.) Who are you to cry when He loves you enough to use you? How can you dread being a goddess? Where would you go but that empty house? What else will you do with your life but be a lapdog for another man? Where would you go but an empty fucking house?? Is to be abandoned by God really worse than not being chosen at all???

Misa Amane is such a fascinating character bc she is doomed before the narrative even starts. The audience never gets to know who Misa was before her parents were killed in front of her Batman-style, and then she watches somebody else die right after being assaulted. And it’s obvious from what we do see of her that these experiences shaped her character as we know it, that she wasn’t always this way, and that there is a completely unreachable person in there worth saving. Two literal GODS OF DEATH sacrifice their lives to give her a second, and third, chance, and she throws those chances away without a moment’s hesitation bc she’s so far gone that she doesn’t want to be saved. If she hinges her entire personality on one person, on one goal, then maybe she doesn’t ever have to think ab what she’s doing and what’s been done to her. It’s so painful for her to be human that she happily and deliberately kills herself a little at a time

when i say "misa amane deserved better" just know i mean it in the "misa amane deserved to have her personality, backstory, and internal monologues expanded upon just as much as her male counterparts and shouldn't have been written as just an extension of light" and not in the "misa amane is a poor baby angel who did no wrong" way.
