When Hawks starts getting comfortable around people, he tends to go non-verbal.
The first time it happens, Dabi figures he's done something wrong.
He's so used to Hawks' constant chitter and chatter, about anything and at any time, even when they start just spending time together, the guy is constantly going on and on about something or another, as if he's terrified of the silence, if it were to ever occur.
That's why it's so surprising to him the day Hawks suddenly just... stops talking.
They're not doing anything special, just hanging around the PLF house, and up until that, they had just being chatting like usual.
At first, Dabi figures the bird finally ran out of things to say, but when he doesn't pick up the talking again after ten minutes, his curiosity is fully peaked.
So, he tries asking him something, and to his surprise, Hawks does answer, just, not in the way Dabi expected him to.
Or thrills, or something like that.
Dabi isn't an expert on bird sounds, okay?
But it's something like that.
And much to Dabi's surprise, he finds they can keep a conversation going pretty decently like that.
Just because Hawks isn't using his words, doesn't mean he can't make himself understood, at least not with Dabi.
It's not like Dabi likes the long, drawn out conversations anyway, and he's quite impressed at how Hawks can chirp in a certain tone, or flap his wings in a specific way, and Dabi immediately understands what he means.
As their relationship becomes more physical, so does the non-verbal conversations.
Quiet crooning into his neck in stead of soft words on a rainy morning, excited chirps and quick flaps of his wings when Dabi brings home yakitori from Hawks' favorite place in stead of hugs and thank you's, nudging their shoulders together while thrilling lowly and looking over at a member of the PLF that always keeps droning on and on in stead of chuckling.
It becomes something that feels like it's only theirs, and over time, Dabi realizes it's one of his favorite things about their relationship.
