Separate post for this but still on the topic of that post I reblogged earlier, this time with an actual focus on veilguard

Veilguard is not a cozy game — but it IS a sanitized one.

Not entirely — kinda hard to erase three or so games’ worth of lore and world building in a series well known for its interconnectedness, even if we didn’t have the option to port all major choices into the latest installment.

And I do want to say that I did in fact enjoy the game — I liked the new art style, I loved the combat mechanics, and I thoroughly enjoyed the cast of characters

But there IS a persistent issue of weak writing, and that other post kind of touches on what I think the crux of that issue is:

The writers were writing around things they did not want to address.

And this is frustrating because of the story they nevertheless chose to try and tell.

If you didn’t want to write about the ugly reality of slavery and blood magic, why would you set a good portion of the story in the fucking blood magic and slavery capitol of Thedas.

Why would you decide to focus on ancient elven gods whom we know from Trespasser also fucking enslaved people.

You cannot effectively tell a story if you cringe away from the core tenets of that story.
