this is too funny because the men draw so little attention from me... but upon my latest (very slow) rewatch, I think it might actually be Matthew for me? I absolutely love what a sweetheart he is, I love how he's always rooting for the underdog (Tom, Edith), he's always encouraging people, he's kind and attentive (also towards Anna for example), he's a lil shy or embarrassed at times and a little awkward, which I love <3
Favorite Female Character
*deep breath* AAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAA my love my life my always my wife my companion. I love Anna so much. From the first to the last scene, it's only ever been her. She's literally three apples tall but it's almost as if you don't notice because of her presence. She is so fiercely loyal, also a defender of the downtrodden or of those treated unfairly. Biggest schemer in Downton (Thomas only WISHES that was him), very funny and witty. She literally said "you *will* let me love you" to the most miserable man on the show and actually got him to accept that. Like holy shit. Absolute queen. She deserved better and luckily in the end she got it
This is difficult because it changes a lot over time, some are only there for a bit (Richard Carlisle), some get so much worse over time or are just terrible or tiresome in certain aspects (Carson, Robert (i wanna mention that i do like them overall but UGH sometimes i just wanna slap them). But then, maybe it's Jimmy? Idk, this is hard, because most of the time i just try to ignore the characters I hate.
WAIT ONE SEC it's probably Green. Yeah no, it's Green. He gets my blood boiling and whenever I see him on screen I just wanna reach in there and strangle him.
That would be Banna en par with Maryanna <3 I love Banna for the insane slow burn (even slower if JFellowes knew how to handle fucking TIME in the show), the softness, the loyalty, the never giving up, the endurance, and their finally happy ending. And Maryanna I love also for the loyalty, the trust, the care, the friendship, the class divide (delicoussss), the honesty, the professional intimacy, and just the deep seated connection that comes from spending YEARS with each other and sharing much more than we probably see on the show.
Uuuh, this is interesting. I do like the Patmore&Hughes of it all (you can be lovers and friends at the same time!), especially during the cancer scare but also beyond that, I love that they're gossip queens, I love that they have someone to confide into and can just have a laugh with.
I also love Anna&Mrs Hughes and wish that was a little more pronounced. Also Anna&Daisy and Anna&Thomas, there's really fascinating stuff there. Oh and I adore Anna&Gwen. And Anna&Matthew though not sure if you can call that a friendship. OH AND OF COURSE VIOLET AND ISOBEL! I love their frenemy dynamic
In general I'm a little sad that especially towards the latter seasons the characters get more and more split up into neat little pairs and they interact less with others outside of their significant other? Which i think is a huge waste of potential
Ugh, there are so MANY!!!! Of course Violet has a bunch of zingers (What is a week-end? I have many friends I don't like. The one about the plague) but also Anna cracks me up a lot with her "And I know women too" to Edna or her "Why, are you going somewhere" to Bates who is in fucking PRISON. Then of course there's the whole romantic shit going down between Anna and Bates, his "You are a lady to me" makes me swoon every time, i freaking LOVe her "It's not against the law to take a mistress" (get it girl!!), but also this exchange:
ANNA: Aren't I as strong as Lady Sybil?
BATES: I don't doubt that.
ANNA: Well, then. If she can do it, so can we. That's what I've been thinking. I have stuck by you through thick and thin.
BATES: Thin and thin, more like.
ANNA: Mr Bates, if we have to face this, then we will face it as husband and wife. I will not be moved to the sidelines to watch how you fair from a distance with no right even to be kept informed. I will be your next of kin, and you cannot deny me that.
I love love love how Anna takes inspiration from Sybil (YAY) and stands her ground, ready to face the storm <3
There are also a bunch of Mary&Anna convos I love, just to name one is the "You're a good friend to me, Anna" and Anna's "I hope we're good friends to each other, m'lady" (I'm citing freely from memory right now btw), and then Mary's "I'll still depend on you, you know that" and Anna's "We all depend on each other, m'lady, the way people should." <3<3<3
Worst Character Death (if any)
Ah, that's got to be Sybil. I was not expecting it at all and I remember I was just eating a salad so it literally happened RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY SALAD like how dare they. No it was so terrible and the images of her lying there and tom and cora by her side just crying are forever etched into my brain i'm afraid...

whaaaaaa so many, mostly banna related. Their engagement (GAWD), their wedding, their wedding night, literally every time they touch, the picnic in scottland ("I *am* racy!") <3<3<3<3 so much good stuff there <3<3<3<3
oof. ok. it's not really a moment but it's the whole arc of anna being raped and what follows, up until her reconciliation with bates. maybe most poignantly the scene in the boot room (QUICK SIDE NOTE WHY DO THEY HAVE HER IN THE BOOT ROOM WHERE IT HAPPENED LITERALLY ALL THE TIME AND WHY IS IT NEVER AN ISSUE FOR HER WHAT THE FUCCKKKKKK) where bates tells her that he knows and she finally breaks. What fucks me up there is anna's guilt and her feeling of being "spoiled," that she's not good enough for him anymore. to me that's a pivotal scene in their relationship.
i'm *really* not good with locations (they always fade into the background for me!) but i do love the downton library (books!)
