Thorn Aurello is a man with many layers
To the general public he is a gentle giant and beloved philantropist. The millionaire moved into the city about 10 years ago and built King's Casino on the charred remains of the previous casino that stood there: The Belladona's Kiss.
(How exactly this building came to burn down shortly before his arrival is still a bit of a mystery, but mister Aurello was kind enough to buy the property for full price from the previous owners so they did not lose any money.)
He resides in the floors above the casino, along with his 2 adopted children and a small group of hand selected tennants that he decided to provide bed and board to, free of charge. They live in presumed luxury and are set for life, quite a nice arrangement if you ask me ;)
Presumed luxury because mister Aurello is a very private man. Quite understandable as his giant stature and gnarly facial scars mean he gets gawked at a lot when he is out in public. He is very friendly though, and a great boss to those under his employment. (Whenever the casino is hiring, there's a long queue of people interviewing for a position)
How did he get those scars? Well that's just an inappropriate question. It was probably a very traumatic event, nothing sinister or suspicious about it, mind your own business!
The criminal community of auros city know better though..
To them, he is the literal cutthroat ruler of the city, also known as the King of Crime. There used to be daily gang violence in the city center of gangs duking it out for territory and power. That came to an end with Thorn's arrival, who beat them all into submission in one great swoop. An arrangement was set up where no grand violence was to happen in the city center, at least not during the daytime. And if you wanted to do have a criminal business operation anywhere in Auros city, you were to have a contract with either Thorn Aurello himself or the other three big dons to pay a monthly tax to be allowed to operate. The amount paid depends on income and operation size and reason. You can be exemped if you only steal to survive for example and might even be offered a job in one of Aurello's legit business associates to get you of the street. Fail to comply however and you will be eliminated after 3 warnings if it comes to late payments and 1 warning if it comes to badmouthing or worse; attacking the king. Trying to snitch on him is also not an option, Thorn has eyes and ears everywhere and if you even think about squeeling he will have you hunted down and terminated.
To his personal crime family, the mysterious tennants and his 2 children, the relationship is a bit complicated. He cares for them like they are his own blood. He will protect them with his life and he pays for all they could ever need and want. They live like royalty, under protection and care of the king. But this living arrangement..it's very much like a gilded cage. You are not allowed to deflect or retire from his family. You aren't allowed to bring up friends or family to the upstairs area unless they have been thoroughly screened by Thorn and deemed trustworthy (they almost never are). You aren't allowed to leave the island (and in edward's case even the city) without explicit permission or supervision. You are genuinely loved but you are also a possesion to be hoarded and kept safe from harm at all costs. You are lonely but never alone.
Then of course there are also Thorn's nightly activities and distant past..but those are stories for another time.
