By the way if you like cubism but really dont want to look at Picasso, check out Francoise Gilot. She tends to do a lot of really stylized paintings of women but… Yanno. Without the abuse.

She’s also one of Picasso’s exes and consequently one of his muses. She’s spoken at length about her experience. And thus far, she’s had some pretty sweet revenge. She’s free, her artwork is simply gorgeous, and she’s still alive today (as of 2020) at the age of 98!

Edit: i would also like to add that Gilot was already an accomplished artist when she became involved with Picasso, and he completely sabotaged her career when she left him. He discouraged museums from showing her work, and he unsuccessfully tried to block the publication of her memoir, Life with Picasso. To my knowledge, she’s the only one of his “muses” who is still alive, so let’s maybe take this time to explore and celebrate the work of a woman who was overshadowed by her abuser.

How many times have I almost flipped my damn phone out of my hand trying to reach the far left corner?  Too many. 

I started using my fiance’s old phone which has a fingerprint reader on the back which is high enough that I either hold it with my other hand or have to be really careful to use it to unlock the damn thing.  He couldn’t understand why I missed my old phone which had it at the bottom on the front where I could use my thumb instead of reaching for it. 

It makes you wonder just how many “clumsy women” stereotypes come from the world not being made to suit women.  Ever gotten into a car and struggling to sit up high enough?  Ever had a guy razz you for not being able to hold a basketball or football in one hand?  Handles for powertools you can barely wrap your fingers around and which require an extreme grip strength to handle properly?  

Male domination comes in a million forms, large and small.

I've been quite fond of my OnePlus brand phone. They're long and narrow, like a 20:9 aspect ratio, so you have lots of screen real estate but it's still narrow enough to fit comfortably in the hand. They're not super big in the US, but they are the most popular phone brand in India. Might be worth looking into for some of you.

Unpopular but true: a large reason why grocery store are empty now isn’t just because there’s a bunch of greedy, awful people panic everything in sight to spite others. Sure, there’s some hoarding assholes, but a lot of it is people realizing they will now need over a month’s worth of groceries in one go when they might usually only buy enough to last them a week, maybe two, and people who can no longer supplement with going out, people who are now eating three meals at home when usually their kids eat lunch at school and they have lunch at the office… that’s a hell of a lot more food than most families need to have on hand, including people who normally never cook and just grubhub everything. The food supply chains will hopefully stabilize a bit in the coming weeks - just wanted to point out it’s not all malicious and people aren’t as awful as is being said. I’m under self imposed quarantine, social distancing, working from home and staying away from others. Hoping all of you guys are safe and feeling ok.

just about every person coming through my line at the grocery store is just buying what they’d usually buy when they buy groceries.  They’re just buying MORE of it than they’d usually buy.  Because they’re needing more than they’d usually need.  I lost count of how many times I was asked if we had any more eggs simply because people told me they were cooking sit down breakfasts for their kids now instead of ‘something they can send them out the door on the way to school with’.  We’re not sold out of milk because we’ve got milk hoarders stalking up their garage for the next five months with milk.  We’re out of milk because everyone’s home now and drinking more of it.  Same with bread.  Our cake mixes aren’t flying off the shelves because people are worried about dessert shortages.  It’s because people are home and doing baking with their free time.  So - yeah - there are some assholes out there hoarding shit.  But its not that simple.  It’s rarely that simple.  Beware of people that tell you its that simple.

should also point out that my store, and most others, have, for a couple weeks now, had a limit on how much of a certain thing people can buy.  So no, even when we do get trucks in, no one’s walking out of our store with two cartloads full of toilet paper.  And I’ve only had to turn away two people that tried to overbuy in the past two weeks as well.

Exactly. I spent my entire month’s grocery budget in two trips. Because I’m hoping/planning to go several weeks without shopping again. Normally, there are at least a few items where I’m like, “Oh, I still have a bit of that left. I’ll get it next time.” But this time I bought all of those items now, and some an extra backup. I mean, I’m a single person shopping only for me. I didn’t buy a huge amount of groceries. But I did buy in a single week what I would normally buy in 3-4 weeks. And if it was ONLY me doing that, it wouldn’t matter. But because EVERYONE is doing it at the same time, suddenly the grocery store’s normal amount of product isn’t enough to cover everyone buying more than they usually do. It makes sense.

People who are shopping for 2 months all at once may also have good reason to do so. They may be living with an immuno-compromised person, which means every extra trip is an extra risk.

In times of great uncertainty, when the future you thought was gonna happen is suddenly uncertain and you feel out of control, it is a normal, common and even healthy response to try to improve your mental stability by focusing on things that you can control.

And having enough food to not have to leave your house for a month? Is something people can control. It’s tangible. It’s measurable. It’s physical.

It’s not ‘brainwashed hoards of capitalist sheep’. It’s a completely normal coping mechanism for scary times. People aren’t selfish, they’re having a normal reaction to an attack on their mental health.

And shouting at them isn’t going to fix that. Nonjudgmental listening might. Offering support might. Solidarity might.

Yeah, I know ‘solidarity with the hoarders’ sound counter intuitive. But people don’t become worthy first and get support second, it works the other way around. When people feel supported, they act like people who are supported.

On February 27, the day Trump told Americans that “One day, it’s like a miracle. It will disappear,” Sen. Richard Burr (R-NC) told a private group of well-connected constituents to prepare for a serious social and economic disruption. A secret recording reveals that Burr told donors to reconsider travel, prepare for schools to close, and expect military mobilization: “There’s one thing that I can tell you about this: It is much more aggressive in its transmission than anything that we have seen in recent history.” Burr, who could have amplified that warning to the country as the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said nothing of the kind in his public comments. But he did sell off hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of stocks before the markets crashed.

Just a friendly reminder that, for reasons I hope they are forced to explain, Republican leaders lied to the American people about what they knew and when they knew it. There are going to be real public health consequences from these lies, and I sure hope there are political consequences, as well.
