I said it once n Ill say it again. Let . girls. be. disgusting. little. oily. gremlins.
literally one of the biggest things I️ learned this year is that it’s okay to go out in public with messy hair. without makeup. in comfy clothes. you do not have to perform female attractiveness as some sort of toll just to EXIST in the world.
The core issue of diversity/inclusion is rarely actually named.
The issue isn’t PoC, and how we make life complicated for white folk.
The issue is white folk, their culture of racial superiority, and how it wreaks havoc on the rest of us by actively seek harm.
“Cultural sensitivity” should mean white folk learning sensitivity on how white culture affects everyone else, who are just trying to mind their own business and go about their day.
“Cultural competency” should mean white folk learning about their role as active and complicit perpetuators of supremacy of white comfort (aka white supremacy). Including a comprehensive tour of the privileges wrought from genocide, slavery, and imperialism. That’s the “cultural competence” test to pass.
The greatest cultural learning white folks should learn is of the power structures they uphold based on race.
The fall of the patriarchy starts with me.
The fall of capitalism starts with me.
The fall of White supremacy starts with me.
The system returning to health, that starts with me too.
The realization that I've been gas-lit by capitalism, for like, my entire life.
I am not faulty, the system is. My lived reality is not up for debate. My internal alarm system is valid, and has always worked exactly as it should. My natural drive towards health and ease (and away from situations of unhealth and disease) is a superpower, not a design flaw.
Away from imposed work schedules, I love the intimacy and nuance that comes to listening to rhythms of my body and creative force (as they are intimately tied). There's this greater awareness and appreciation of the ebb/flow of the web in which we are all connected. When freed from the relentless grind of "continuous productivity" so much other stuff starts to organically emerge. Like an over-worked field allowed to go fallow and come into its natural being. The result is unknowable, delightful, and endlessly abundant.
We have 100% ability for patriarchy to fall within our *individual* system. And we have significant ability to have it fall in our 1-to-1 systems. And to a lesser degree, in our community systems that we are actively engaged with shaping. And onwards onwards. From these individual branches, the entire system will topple, that might not or might not be in our lifetimes. It will be a natural organic by-product of a revolution happening from the bottom up, starting from our hearts/healing first.
Coming into wholeness is not a linear process. You’ll make a first pass and unburden a few things perhaps. Then perhaps the thought will comes that you’re “done” and can move on.
But that’s just not how it works.
Layers do not release in a single instance. They slough and peel at their own pace, when they are ready.
There’s can be a sweetness to the revisiting, an intimacy that only comes in a return.
You’ll be drawn back to a pattern, a person, an issue, and perhaps think “What? This again? Haven’t I learned anything?”
But that is negating your own sweet multi-dimensionality.
The curves, layers, and nuances of healing work are a direct reflection of the curves, layers, and nuances of your very you-ness.
My Privilege Breakdown
This is a living document, to be updated on a regular basis.
Guiding questions:
In what areas are things built for my comfort/ease, while other must contort themselves?
In what areas is my lived experience the default, while others experiences are erased?
In what areas do I have access to opportunities that others do not?
In what areas am I protected, while others are unprotected?
In what areas are others who don’t belong “worth hurting”?
Through the lens of mainstream American-ness:
Privileges:
Cis-gendered
Heterosexual
Neurotypical
Thin
Able-bodied
Language fluency
Generational wealth (second generation)
Middle class
Easily coded as “respectable”.
Disadvantages:
Female
Not white - PoC (generally), Asian Am (specifically)
Physical attributes: left-handedness, shorter than average
Through a more nuanced lenses,
Disengaging from the mainstream American gaze, this is where things become more interesting:
Privileges
East Asian (respective to Asian Am). In Asian Am discourse, East Asians are representationally dominant
Han Chinese: (respective to general Chinese)
Disadvantages
?
Race as an invented construct to serve capitalism. Yes, it's that explicitly foundational in the shaping of our country.
John C Calhoun, 1848 - pro-slavery 6th VP of the United States: "With us the two great divisions of society are not the rich and poor, but white and black; and all the former, the poor as well as the rich, belong to the upper class, and are respected and treated as equals, if honest and industrious; and hence have a position and pride of character of which neither poverty nor misfortune can deprive them."
Capitalism is not a ladder of opportunity (FUCK YOU model minority myth).
The system was designed for the benefit of the power holders. Full stop. Under capitalism, the rest of us are here to serve that purpose.
Just like farm animals have been genetically programmed to yield the most “product” for its owners. Our cultural programming is to yield the most productiveness for the owners of the system.
Under capitalism, this is our only purpose, and all other capitalist constructs exist to keep us bound to it.
The creative spirit which moves through me/you is answerable to no one. It does not bow to productivity, and definitely not to capitalism.
Until it is consciously healed, anything born from this culture, will bear its marks. It’s not a question of “if”, it’s a question of “how”.
