I’m so struggling with the way Yuna is being used to highlight the pressure as a brand, a player, and a model minority Shane is under. I adore Yuna in the books and, of course this is a different thing, and she may drop that later. I have defended what Jacob is doing with her character and I understand.
But Asian mothers are so often portrayed in the media as hard-nosed, demanding, over-involved and having ski high expectations. The more I see of her, the more racial stereotypes I see playing out in her character. It might have been interesting to see David in that role, or an agent. I’m just sad to see her ridiculous support and love for Shane as a person and a rabid hockey fan coloured a bit by her role as his agent.
Shane Hollander, The Hollywood Representation Gay Asian Men Needed
As a gay Asian-Canadian man, it’s rare to see myself represented on TV. Watching Shane Hollander in Heated Rivalry was the first time I’ve seen a gay Asian man finally allowed to be the lead, so I decided to make a video essay on it and my take on the cultural impact of his story. Enjoy, and let me know if it resonates with you!
🗣️ Pay very close attention!
Please forget, for a moment, that many people live in the intersection of simultaneously being Black + LGBTQ + refugee + Asian. Instead, I am asking you to look at how the Republican culture wars are pitting one identity against the other.
DeSantis has banned any mention of Gay and Trans people, Black Lives Matter, George Floyd, Critical Race Theory, and much more… but now he is mandating Asian American history.
Florida and other Republican controlled legislators around the country are whitewashing and erasing Black history from school history textbooks, while also making Asian history a requirement. ⁉️
Please be just a little bit curious.
You must ask yourself, why?
WHY would an abjectly racist politician ban one culture’s history, but require another’s?
DeSantis is playing Asian people, the “model minority,” against—in his eyes—all of the “less desirable” minorities: Black people, Lgbtq+ people, etc. etc. etc. It’s a classic divide and conquer strategy.
Please see his ploy for what it is. We are all stronger together. Republicans know this. It’s why they’re working so hard to drive wedges between us.
Don’t fall for the okie doke.
The weirdest, least successful "white supremacy" ever.

(PUBLISHING OLD DRAFTS THAT ARE GOOD / INTERESTING; This was written in June 2023)
Subtle Model Minority thing pervasive in society is that a lot of "not racist or bigotted people" are a lot more comfortable ignoring or arguing your requests to not say or do problematic things because often Model Minorities are in that shitty middle ground of not being white so racists still hate you and not Loudly Victimized to be treated like a "real minority".
