I saw the last Jedi and have mixed feelings about it. I heard a lot of complains, that Luke is out of character. Even Mark Hamill said he disagreed with a lot about what they did with Luke. What is your take on that? Based on MBTI do you think TLJ Luke was out of character? Thank you for your answer.   Bara

Well, Mark Hamill also said he thought it would be cool if Luke was the villain of the new trilogy. ;)

SPOILERS FOR THE LAST JEDI

I don’t have a problem with the changes made to Luke Skywalker in the new trilogy, even though I can see why a lot of fans would be upset. Luke was a beacon of purity, hope, goodness, and inner idealism in the original films, whose every decision was motivated through his love for his friends – and here he’s a man gripped with regret, sulking for decades alone on an alien planet, who has shut himself away from the Force and refuses to answer Leia’s call.

I have no idea the motives behind this script choice, but I’ll tell you why it doesn’t bother me that much, and I’ll start from the bottom up and reach the main emotional drive at the end.

1: Luke redeems himself.

At the end of the day and of the film, Luke confronts his own regret and decides to take action after all. He steps in, in an incredible show of Force power that literally drains him to the point of death, to protect his sister and the last remnants of the Resistance by channeling all his power into a Force hologram that can physically interact with and stall Kylo Ren. So, he saves everyone’s lives before he goes peacefully into the Force. (He’ll be back.)

2. People change.

Wanting a character to be the same, forty years later shows a lack of ability to understand how people mature, grow up, experience hardships, and change through their life experiences. Luke will not be the same person at 60 as he was at 18. This isn’t a reaction to him being ‘different,’ it’s more of a reaction to him not being WHO FANS EXPECTED HIM TO BE. Again, I understand. I get it, if one of my favorite characters showed up having taken a dramatic turn for what I’d consider to be the worst, I’d be pissed too. This is Luke’s redemption arc. He made a mistake. He had to learn to deal with, and ask forgiveness.

3. Luke had to confront his own evil and didn’t like it.

This is the main motivator. Luke has always been good. He has always been with the Light side of the Force. Confronted with difficult choices, he made the right ones. But he has also always been black and white in his ethics. Put yourself in Luke’s shoes for a moment. Imagine someone whose entire worth is based in the rock-solid, pure decisions they make. Sure, you screw up, make small mistakes, lose people along the way, but you can always trust yourself to be good. Moral. Do the right thing.

And then your nephew shows up, a raging ball of Dark Force powers. He causes you tremendous concern. And instead of feeling enormous compassion for a scared boy whose brain is flooded with dark energy, you stand over him in his hut, and feel such enormous fear and repulsion toward something you cannot understand or identify with that you draw your light saber and almost murder him in his sleep. Yes, Luke hesitated. He changed his mind. But the very fact that he could THINK about doing that probably shook him to his core. This was not just about running away from the truth, about hiding because Kylo Ren destroyed his Jedi temple and killed all those kids; this was Luke, going away from the world because he saw darkness INSIDE HIMSELF and could not face it. Coach it in whatever language you want; it was a preemptive strike, the boy was dangerous, blah, blah. He was still, as Luke said, “a scared boy.” And Luke just saw how his first reaction was KILL IT.

Luke thought Rey was ‘reckless’ for ‘throwing herself into the Dark Side of the Force’ on the island; he said she never even resisted it! That’s the difference between them; Rey embraces that side of herself, she is aware it’s there, she learns to face it and cope with it, whereas Luke runs from it. That’s why she’s the right person to channel all that ‘raw power,’ because she’s not SCARED of herself, or the Dark Side of the Force. She doesn’t have Skywalker baggage.

Luke, in essence, had to face his own Dark Side, had to admit it was there, something hard for someone who probably believes they are good to the core. So what happens when Fi’s must confront their own inner darkness? They run away. They hide. They withdraw. This is something they have to work through, in their own intense inner emotions. Some of them punish themselves through isolation. This isn’t about Leia. It isn’t about Han. It isn’t even about Ben. It’s about Luke, feeling like he failed the Force, he failed himself, he failed his nephew, he just flat out failed, because his first impulse was what he would consider to be Evil.

Psychologists call an inability to face the truth of oneself splitting (which can lead to bottomless self-hatred and self-punishment), but it also shows a naivety of human nature. Almost anyone I have ever met believes they are much more moral than their ancestors; they would not allow slavery, they would not be a Nazi… little do any of them realize, yes, it’s possible they would have done or allowed those things. The statistical odds are, they’d have been no different from those people. People self-protect. Almost no one wants to sacrifice their life on principles or a cause, that’s why only a few people stand out for doing so in history. It’s arrogance to assume you would be one of the few, or that there’s no self-preserving darkness inside yourself.

Luke found out he’s not the pure ball of light he thought he was. And that’s disheartening for anyone, much less a Skywalker who helped redeem his father from the darkness and saw himself prepared to cut down his nephew. As for that act itself, I don’t think that was out of character, either. Back when the first film came out, I figured something similar had gone down with Ben and Luke, because it’s natural for Fi-doms to have a dramatic, violent reaction to anything they consider to be immoral / wrong and to find the person doing it ‘bad.’

The Worst Nightmare of Each Type

INFJ - Realizing that the cause they have been supporting is run by treacherous and immoral people. Any good they’ve ever done in the world is instantly erased and turned into something harmful. Everyone they care for believes they are cruel and heartless.

ENFJ - Everything they do continuously comes out wrong, and the more they try to fix it the worse it becomes. Every person they try to help somehow ends up worse off than before, and they are seen as the reason why everything is going wrong.

INFP - Being trapped in a crowded room with morally bankrupt people, and having to coexist with them. Not being allowed to express their emotions, or process anything alone. Being forced to watch injustices and not being able to stop them or express how wrong they are.

ENFP - They no longer can speak to other people, and are forced to be silent at all times. Their ability to express themselves and be creative has been taken from them. Because of this the world sees them are uncaring and unfriendly. They aren’t allowed to explore new possibilities and must maintain a strict schedule.

INTJ - Being forced to listen to people spread incorrect information, and those people are revered as geniuses. They are unable to speak out against anyone who is wrong, and are actually made to agree with them. Every emotion they have ever felt is transmitted in public and everyone sees them as emotional and incapable of intelligent thought.

ENTJ - Being forced to comply with someone else’s poorly developed plan. They have no ability to stand out or add insight to the plan, and when all is said and done everyone believes they are the reason things are going wrong. They constantly have to listen to others emotional problems, and have to sympathize with them.

INTP - They are forced to follow the lead of an ignoramus, whose only goal is to feed lies to the masses. They aren’t allowed to explore new possibilities, and everyone around them is incapable of accuracy. Because of this, they have to watch the people they care about fall victim to these falsities. They are mocked for their thoughts and emotions.

ENTP - Is forced into solitary confinement, where they are never allowed to debate anything ever again. They have to constantly listen to people discussing vapid topics with no intelligent discussion involved. Creative thought is banned.

ISTJ - They have to wake up each morning not knowing what will happen that day. They aren’t allowed to plan and have to live in a constantly messy and cluttered environment. Each day is filled with unknowns, and they aren’t given instructions until moments before they have to do something.

ESTJ - They are forced to follow the orders of a messy and unorganized fool. No one around them is allowed to listen to their commands, and they are forced to keep them to themselves. They are seen by everyone as incapable and weak.

ISFJ - Everywhere they go it seems like everyone is unhappy and fighting. Every time they try to stop the arguing, they are verbally attacked and everything wrong they have ever done is brought to light. Everything around them is a mess and every-time they try to organize they are yelled at and forced to stop.

ESFJ - They aren’t allowed to express caring towards others, and are seen as cold and inconsiderate. They know that their loved ones are in danger, but they are completely powerless to stop it. Every-time they do try to fix the problem or make things better, it just keeps getting worse. Because of this they are left forever alone and are abandoned by their loved ones.

ISTP - They are forced to sit in a room and listen to intellectually moribund people try to solve a problem. As they watch these people attempt to put something together, they are unable to help or say a word.

ESTP - They are incapable of feeling excitement, and must sit alone in a room all day long. There are no reading materials or things to keep them busy, just their own thoughts.

ISFP - They are forced to live with people who are rude, and make them live each day based on a strict schedule. They are constantly criticized and there is no one around that cares enough to step in and stop it.

ESFP - The world breaks out with a terrible sickness, and the only way to survive is by staying inside and avoid all social engagements until the end of time.

Jesus Christ was a brown Jew in the Middle East, conceived out of wedlock in an arguably interracial if not interspecies (deity and human) relationship, raised by his mother and stepfather in place of his absent father.  He may not have had a Y chromosome.  He spent his early youth as a refugee in Egypt, where his family no doubt survived initially on handouts from the wealthy (You think they kept that gold, frankincense, and myrrh from the wise men?  Hell no, they sold that stuff for food and lodging).  He later returned with his parents to their occupied homeland and lived in poverty.

The religion of Jesus’s people has no concept of a permanent hell and instructed its priests on how to induce miscarriages.  Jesus explicitly rejected the concept of disability as a divine punishment.  He spoke out against religious hypocrites.  He had enough respect for women to let his mother choose the time of his first miracle.  He blessed a same sex couple.  He told a rich man that he must give up his wealth to get to heaven, and also told a parable about a rich man suffering in agony in presumably Gehinnom (basically Purgatory) just to hammer the point home.  He told people to pay their taxes.  He declared “love your neighbor” to be one of the two commandments on which all laws hang.  He commanded his followers to help the poor.  He commanded them to help the sick and the needy.  He spent time with social outcasts.  He healed the servant of a high priest during his arrest rather than fighting back.  He was put to death by the occupying government because he was a political radical.

Trump and his administration are xenophobic, misogynistic, racist, fear-mongering, warmongering, tax-dodging, anti-Semitic, anti-choice, anti-welfare, anti-equal pay, anti-LGBTQIA+, anti-immigration, support tax cuts for the rich, support Citizen’s United, want to keep refugees out of this country, want to limit our ability to speak against the government, plan to abolish the Affordable Care Act, and they wrap all of that up behind a banner of “Christian family values.”  If you support them, you have no right to call yourself a follower of Christ.

The Muppet Christmas Carol: Ebenezer Scrooge [ISTJ]

Introverted Sensing (Si): Scrooge is a man defined by his personal past, who becomes so entrenched in his own rut, he cannot move forward, and doesn’t even take his dead partner’s name off the door! Once the Ghost of Christmas Past takes him back there, Scrooge relives all his old memories and the emotions that go along with them, finally processing these events on an emotional level, in order to see how bitterness has made him solitary and miserable over the years. He finds it hard to adapt to Christmas, because he’s never known a happy or pleasurable one – only after seeing how others celebrate it, with festivities and good cheer, can Scrooge learn the true meaning of Christmas.

Extroverted Thinking (Te): He’s all about revenues. Bob persuades him to shut the doors on Christmas by using a logical argument (it’s a waste of expensive coal for the fire, since no one else will be open and no one will be frequenting the local shops anyway!). He’s a workaholic, who complains to his former boss about the “expense” of hosting a Christmas party every year. When engaged to Belle, Scrooge consistently puts her off, saying he wants to “make enough money to buy a decent home first.” He’s frank in his opinions and sometimes so logically detached as to be offensive (his statement about those who are going to die better do it, and decrease the surplus population!).

Introverted Feeling (Fi): Scrooge has a good heart buried under there somewhere! Alas, no one can much see it until the ghosts get done with him! Then he “overflows with good cheer!” Scrooge takes decades to process his feelings about Belle leaving him, only able to cry when faced with the memory. He goes from being a self-centered miser to the “kindest, most generous man who ever lived!”

Extroverted Intuition (Ne): Imagination? Not so much. Scrooge even dismisses his own ghosts as being hallucinations from bad food. It’s only when the ghosts show him a vision of the future that warns him against his own downfall that he begins to open up to greater possibilities, and argues that no single vision of the future can be true; things can be changed and made right!
