I’ve been seeing some people getting into MHA recently (including some good friends of mine) and I’ve seen this question pop up a lot.
Why hasn’t U.A. expelled Bakugou by now? He’s a bully, he’s psychopathic, he’s a villain, he’s dangerous around other students.
People who have already read the manga have either become indifferent to him or love him, so this question probably hasn’t crossed our minds in a while. It definitely didn’t cross mine until recently. So, I thought about it and, the more I did, the more the question made sense.
At the beginning of the manga, Bakugou shows a lot of potential for both good and bad. He’s incredibly talented and smart, but has a terrible attitude towards violence attached. This is a hero school. Why would they accept, or even keep, a child who shows so many villainous tendencies?
I think it’s because they wanted to steer him away from that.
You would think Aizawa would have straight up expelled Bakugou because he showed zero potential for being a hero, less in physical abilities and more in his attitude. But, he didn’t. He could have very easily expelled Bakugou, he’s done it to entire classes before. And he’s a very rational person. Surely, he would have seen how violent Bakugou is and decided he wasn’t worth the trouble. He would put everyone else’s lives at risk.
But, he didn’t. He didn’t expel Bakugou. He’s still around.
I think the teachers at U.A. want to help Bakugou. They want to help shape him into someone worthy of claiming the hero mantle. They see he has a lot of potential for it, but he’s been so misguided his entire life that he doesn’t realize heroism is more than just winning.
And, if we wanted to really reach, I think it’s entirely possible they also wanted to steer him away from potential villainy. And, yeah, later in the manga, we learn that he’s so dead set on being a hero that even the mere idea that he could be a villain offends him to no end. But, for an outsider looking in, for someone who’s only known Bakugou for maybe a couple of days to a week, he’s on that path.
He has the quirk, he has violent tendencies, and he doesn’t get along with his classmates. He’s ambitious and reckless and intelligent as hell. The possibility of him becoming a villain is terrifying.
Because, he wants to be the number one hero, and the best at everything he does. If he put his mind to it, he could be one of, if not the best, villain in the country.
So, I think the teachers wanted to prevent that. Shape him into the hero they think he could be, that he wants to be, because he could be a great hero.
Now, for a lot of manga readers, this is probably a logical conclusion to come to. But, for a lot of early readers or anime-only watchers, they may not see it yet. I mean, it might be easy to forget, but Bakugou was an unpleasant character at the beginning of the manga.
So, I understand why people don’t like him. I respect that. But, there’s a lot more to him, and this story. I promise.
