Andaran atish'an everyone and welcome to this blog! A bit of information on this blog and it’s purpose; This is a fan Project being made by a fan for fellow fans who played Dragon Age:the Veilguard and weren’t to happy with what we got.
From the constant watering down of the world and lore we’ve all come to love about dragon age, Or be it the lack of player interaction/agency the RPG. To the poor writing of side characters, companions and storyline. To the very modern way people of this game talk and react to things around them. To our previous game choices from the last three games not mattering what’s so ever.
Seeing all these issues that could’ve easily been fixed and ironed out had BioWare and EA gave their workers, writer and development team the time and resources to make the game they truly wanted to make after the release of Dragon Age Inquisition’s trespasser DLC.
This fan project will be focusing on aspects of the story, Act 1-Act 3 of the game with MAJOR story changes along with side plots that could truely have an effect on the outcome of the game. Our companions will also be getting actual personalities past stereotypes and one key obsession the have. Their relationships and factions actually playing a role in how they interact with one another.
To do so this project will focus on the early 2018 theories we as a fandom had when the first teaser trailer released under the name of Dragon Age Dread Wolf; a name I will be using as Solas actually played a major key rule in the game. But these theories being held together with what we’ve been experiencing in the last three games; and with the help of the Dragon age Veilguard artbook that holds much of the original storylines of project Joplin hopefully I can rewrite this game to be what we fans of Dragon age wanted to see after waiting 10 years for.
Once again this is a Fan Project made by one person; and as I work a full time job and this being a passion project expect slow uploads. Have any questions ask me and I will try my best to answer them!
𖥸 Greetings alls! A small mini update on the process of the next post regarding this rewrite! I am in the process of writing the romance bits for the rewrite from Dragon age origins-inquisition so this will take a bit for me to write but also a small update; I am also preparing for art Fight this year as well so at the moment that is my focus as this will be my second year participating! Hope to see you guys there and on here when I post the first part of the rewrite regarding romance effects on the story/ codex’s 𖥸
Andaran atish'an fellow fans and readers, let's begin on this long journey together, shall we...
Dragon Age is the most well-known and loved fantasy RPG, valued for its worldbuilding, characters, and rich player choices throughout all three games. Dragon Age Origins, Dragon Age II, and Dragon Age Inquisition; what do all three games have in common with each other, you may ask? Consequences for your choices, Dragon Age never was afraid to give players the evil options to truly be the most terrible person in the game.
You want to be just an asshole to companions to make them hate your guts; the game gave you that option. Wanting to be a greedy protagonist who only cares about getting paid and not caring about how they got the coin. Or maybe you want to take Tavinter slave traders and hunters up on their offer of allowing them to continue their operations in the Denerim alienage or even sell your own companions back to his old master? But if being an evil or morally grey character isn't up your character's alley, maybe being the storybook hero is? never declining anyone's cries for help, and always giving money to anyone who needs it, and in doing so, you gain a reputation for your generosity, maybe even having the not-so-savory people tell their friends, and also wanting a handout.
The point being, Dragon Age never shied away from giving us the players, the options, and opportunities to let our characters be who we wanted them to be. And with the additions to more Dragon Age titles, the Dragon Age Keep was made to allow us the player's to transferred all of our choices over to the next game; to truly see how our actions had an affect on the world as a whole, whether it was talking to NPC our characters interacted with or entire political choices that changed how a country was ran/ruled under. All these choices were ours to make. Now, an argument could be made that not all of the small choices that our characters made mattered (ex, saving little Jimmy's ram) which i tend to agree with cause not every small choice on a quest should continue on after a game or two, but the choices that were major milestones in the game storyline, or be it key points that showed us how we wanted our characters to be, shone through.
Unfortunately, Veilguard did away with Dragon Age Keep...this was a major blow to many, as we've played three whole games, creating our 'canon' world states and beloved characters' choices that affected the world of thedas. Only for their continuation from the major threat of Solas and the end of Thedas as we knew it had all our choices boiled down to three... yes, three choices for our inquisitor (who had little to no screen time or involvement in the game) to have transferred over. Now, if many of you were in the Dragon Age fandom at the time, you know the buzz this caused in the fandom. For many, fearing this would be yet another Hawke situation like in Dragon Age Inquisition, or fearing that this meant our inquisitor would have no involvement in the story... unfortunately, these worries were very well founded.
Not all were gloom and pessimistic, though, as some of us understood that not every choice we made would affect the part of Thedas we were traveling to, as Tavinter, for the most part, kept quiet and let the south handle everything. So as a whole we all collectively agreed that these choices had to be as follows;
⊱ Who is the divine
⊱ Stop or redeem solas
⊱ Who drank from the well of sorrows
And with the romance choices being separate...But this wasn't the case as the three choices that were supposed to flesh out our Inquisitor held no weight to their influence in the world or added anything to what happened to them in the ten years they were helping Varric...The choices we were given in Veilguard were as follows;
⊱ Who did you romance
⊱ Disbanded the inquisition or gave it to the chantry
⊱ Stop or redeem solas
The weight between these two sets of options we as fans wanted and what our inquisitor was boiled down to is... disappointing to say the least. Now I could go on and on about the wants and the what ifs of the choices that could've been transferred over from the Inquisition, which there are many. So instead, I've made a list of choices in the last three games I believe should have been implemented alongside the Dragon Age Keep being used for Dragon Age: Dread Wolf giving the locations we visit in the game and the lore significance of these choices while holding onto player agency; let's begin
· · ─────── ·𖥸· ─────── · ·
For much of these games and their key decisions, I've boiled it down as such: Does the game hold decisions that can be later connected to Dragon Age Dread Wolf? If so, how do these decisions have an impact on reintroduced characters to allow this unexplored part of the world of Thedas to grow and feel alive?
𖥸 Dragon Age: Origins 𖥸
Starting off strong with the first game of the series, Dragon Age Origins. The building block and foundation for the world of Thedas as a whole. Being the best example of holding players accountable for their actions in the story as a whole.
⊱ Race & Background of your warden (this could simply be put into a codex entry)
⊱ Your Romance ( this will have its own section)
⊱ Is your warden alive or dead?
⊱ Old god baby? or not? (This plays a huge role in the latest games, so why not this one, as the wardens/Alistair's son is hinted to hold some sort of rule we have yet to know about)
⊱ Does Zevran live? ( If he lives, romanced or not, he still goes to kill crows from his house and others, so his rule in the story can be very interesting if he is alive)
⊱ Did your warden help the crows? (This quest could have an interesting dialogue on the Crows history with their contracts and seeking outside aid; allowing players from other factions to do Crow contracts if they so wanted, also would be interesting to hear what the Crows thought of our warden and failing that contract on them)
⊱ Killed or sided with the Tavinter Slavers in Denerim? (This quest will give much-needed dialogue on slavery in Tavinter, and even if players encounter the very elves their warden allowed the slavers to take with them or killed)
⊱ Architect Alive or Dead? (This character could play a very MAJOR rule in DA:DW due to him not being influenced by the blight or its calling to search for the Archdemons, but also i believe he would be playing a major rule in aiding in fighting against the mindless darkspawn and giving our main character the information to aid them; heck he could at some point find a cure of the blight even, if alive if not he could still play a rule as the darkspawn who he did 'cure' (very loose term) could still aid the MC be it in a negative light at the start due to the warden killing their savior in a sense; I'm shocked he wasn't included or at least mentioned in DA:V)
𖥸 Dragon Age: II 𖥸
The second game, while having its own flaws, does give us a HUGE glimpse into what the Qun and Tavinter are like with the Arashake & Fenris. And while our DA:O playthrough choices transfer to this game with ease, there are some major characters and quests I believe would transfer over to DA:DW with ease while giving us new characters to meet as well.
⊱ Classes (loose mentions of them being a mage, warrior or rogue)
⊱ Romances (this will have its own section)
⊱ Killing or siding with slavers (same as Origins, where the players' choices of allowing slaver's to go and continue their trade will have a rippling effect since Tavinter is the slave capital of Thedas and is built and run on the back of their slaves)
⊱ Handed Fenris back to Danarius? ( Obviously, this decision has MAJOR consequences wither to do sell Fenris back to the magister or kill the magister; both boths lead to to some sort of outcome in the DA:DW be it Fenris being killed or scared from Danarius attempting to take back the lyrium markings OR the outcome and power imbalance when Hawke and Fenris kill a Tavinter Magister which will cause Tavinter to be far harsher on slaves since it was an ex slave who killed a magister)
⊱ Redeeming Isabela (This choice will keep isabela on good terms with hawke and have positive conversations and mentions of her friend; as well as effecting how she handles the Lord of fortune, Isabela who isn't redeemed will steal and sell whatever she wants no matter of who gets hurt and her Lords will have the same mentality; but a redeemed isabela would take time to make sure her theft wouldn't start a war like it did with the Qun in kirkwall now that doesnt mean she doesn't steal from anyone or any culture cause this is isabela if its up for grabs shell steal it no matter what and knowing her backstory of her city being under the Qun occupation she will most definitely steal from them far more; cause no one is safe from her piracy. shell just make sure these artifacts won't be tracked down or cause the end of the world if she can help it)
⊱ Killing Zevran or sparing him (this outcome will result in Zev being killed by the crows; or if you spare him, he would be more inclined to help his friends' new friends, maybe being an informant of sorts in DA:DW due to his knowledge on the crows and how they operate he could aid a none-antivan crow Rook or be the spy they need to stop the Antaasm invasion which will still happen but differently)
⊱ Feynriel's Fate (The half elf dreamer who we can decide much of his fate in this game he could become possessed and we must kill him, we just kill him, or he lives and ends up in Tavinter no matter what, If Feynriel is spared and saved by Hawke he could end up being an apprentice or some sort of useful in aiding the player in DA:DW fighting off Solas in their dreams due to him being a dreamer he could also be handy in speaking to the players of tensions in Tavinter through their own dreams as well)
⊱ Siding with mages or templars (this choice will have effects in DA:I but also mentions in Tavinter and the Mourn watcher as either them speaking of the strictness of the templars or the Mages rising up to be free like the ones in Tavinter; it would be interesting to hear what Tavinter thinks of these tensions and conclusions to the Mage and Templar war in the south this also leads into Anders being alive in Tavinter as well)
𖥸 Dragon Age: Inquisition 𖥸
We come to the main focus of this section of the blog, and that is what choices from Dragon Age: Inquisition and its DLC Trespasser should be transferred over into the next entry of this series. Let's dive right in and tackle this beast.
⊱ Race/Class ( it would be nice to hear our inquisitor speak on magical studies or fighting tactics, even being sneaky, anything to incorporate their class in the conversation. Furthermore, the Inquisitors' race played no part in the game that takes place in Tavinter, a place like much of Thedas that has biases on races that aren't human; not acknowledging or not incorporating the thing that makes the world feel lived in makes it bland)
⊱ Romance (This will have its own section)
⊱ Mages or Templars (this key part of Act 1 in Inquisition should hold wait in the next game due to it showing the North what the South's political tension is and gives some interesting insights on what the people in northern thedas think of the south letting mages go free, or allowing Templars to gain a foothold on the rebel mages)
⊱ Who rules Orlais? (for a country that was worried that Tavinter might attack them in their weakened state due to the civil war, so why not mention how the country is being run with Celen being the 'peacekeeper', Gaspard raising tensions with Fereldan once again, or Balara trying to keep the peace between the elves and humans of Orlais while dealing with elven spies; this being an overarching issue)
⊱ Who drank from the well of sorrows? (This is self-explanatory; in DA:V we aren't given any information on who drank from the well of the importance and consequences of doing so; and it seemed as if they forgot all about Solas absorbing a piece of mythal and in a way now having control over the well....Like Morrigan didn't absorb any mythal, and she was very much against doing so, as she just wanted the knowledge that came with the well, not the being chained to a goddess bit. So have it where the inquisitor, if they drank from the well, they had to be watched closely in case Solas tried to take control or have them do something. and with Morrigan have it be part of her character that she 'flew too close to the sun' and in a way fell right into another trap, but this time one of her own making. There has to be weight to this major decision in Act 3 of Inquisition)
⊱ Who's Divine? (Whoever you choose to be divine will determine how they handle the threats to their allies and the world order of the Qunari invading and pushing into other countries to absorb them into the Qun, as well as their reaction to the war between the Qunari and Tavinter reaching a boiling point. Cassandra would probably call for an exalted march to restore order as quickly as possible if Varric and the inquisitor aren't successful in stopping Solas; While Leliana would send trusted spies, resources, and information to the party to aid them as she tried to peace talk the nations, and when everything reaches its boiling point, she would then call for an exalted march)
⊱ Stop Solas or Redeem him ( this choice as actuel effects on how the inquisitor reacts to the players' choices and even Varrics in letters before meeting the inquisitor; an inquisitor who now sees Solas as irredeemable and a threat they must stop would be hardened, they wouldn't be understanding when it comes to say Varric wanting to redeem or save Solas from himself or even the player making choices that lean more into them wanting to save/redeem solas themselves. To contrast this, an inquisitor who wants to redeem Solas would be aiding the player and Solas to help them find a way to save their friend/lover, to find a way to stop him from destroying the world. The impacts of each should be felt from both ends of the board, so to speak. Rook should feel the tension and the high risk of siding or not siding with the inquisitor's choices, and Varric and the inquisitor, alongside their friends, should feel like they too have their own opinions on the inquisitor's choices)
