Danny nodded and smiled at her description of Jake. He had only kind of briefly met him, but he seemed cool. Okay, that was an understatement. He was massively cool and intimidating because of how cool he seemed.

Still, it must suck not to have him around.

He didn’t even realize the comparison to his own life until Haley said something about it. Because, to him, it was wildly different. Jane had left when Danny had still been so young that he felt, sometimes, like he barely knew her. Or she barely knew him. Even still, having lived in the same town together for almost a year, for the first time in nearly a decade, Danny didn’t really know Jane that well. He had this feeling that she was still hiding. Or running from something and he didn’t know what. He didn’t think it was him, but he also felt like if he pushed, she would spook and run even farther.

It wasn’t like Haley and Jake, who were relatively close in age. (Compared to the decade between him and Jane anyway.) They had lived together. Had both been pretty open Magicks. He was pretty sure both their parents were alive too and they had gone to Swynlake for education, not because their cousin was kidnapped and another one back from being kidnapped–

But, Danny didn’t like to be a pessimist. He could feel himself start to spiral, the way he always did if he thought about his and Jane’s relationship too much.

“Eh, I guess. Sorta. I dunno. Jane left for college when I was ten and never really came back, so–” Danny shrugged. “We aren’t super close.” It felt weird admitting. Like he was betraying Jane somewhat.

“I still missed her though, yeah. Uh, at least–you go home for holidays and stuff usually? I am sure you’ll see him then. And you’ve got a sister now! That’s kind of cool.”

Haley didn’t really know Danny’s relationship with Jane. He didn’t talk about it much. He talked about seeing her when he did but never how he really felt about it. She just assumed that similar dynamics were kind of around. Well, Jake was a lot sillier than Jane. Jane seemed like super serious and intimidating and well... smoldery hot. Not that she ever told Danny that his older sister was hot but she was. Especially because she was a TA.

“No? I mean I guess with the age gap it can be kind of a little different. And I mean everyone has their own different relationships so that’s totally cool. Uh, I mean, I didn’t mean to make assumptions--just kind of figured you sort of had that whole older sibling leaving home perspective.” She cleared her throat briefly at the end of the sentence.

Haley gave a shrug and an easy sort of smile, “Yeah Deb is cool. She’s always just been really nice to me and super supportive of Jake and that’s kind of all you need, I guess. They’re cute together. I’m glad I got to see their ceremony even if it was kind of rushed all at the last minute.” She chuckled. Seriously, it was so them though. If Haley ever got married it would be a whole strategically organized kind of thing, spreadsheets and many many plans and seating charts.

“Good one,” Danny chuckled at Haley’s quip. What? He thought it was a clever play on words.

He stepped back and held the door open for Haley, then waited for her to lock it up and take the lead as they headed down the stairs and towards the cafeteria in companionable silence until they hit were crossing the quad. Danny really liked silence with people sometimes. The ones who didn’t make it weird or feel like they needed to talk. Most the friends he made were like that. Well, Anna always filled the silences, but she rarely needed his input which was alright. He was fine just listening to her ramble.

The point was keeping expectations low.

At Haley’s question he swung his head towards her casually. “Hm? Oh, nothing much. Eric and I went to the pumpkin patch in Besydus the other day and I’m trying to convince my cousins and sisters to dress up for Halloween. What about you? How’re you doing with your brother back in New York?”

Haley awkwardly finger gunned (which she immediately realized was because she hung around Vanessa way too much) in response to the compliment.

The younger girl gave a nod at the pumpkin patch detail and Halloween. Normal stuff. His question about her brother though caught her off guard. No one had really asked much about it. It was just something that had happened. Her brother married Deb and they went to New York to live happily ever after. She missed him.

“Oh, I’m adjusting. It’s kind of a whole new thing living in the dorms instead of the apartment. Having a roommate that isn’t my brother or Fu.” She gave a shrug. “I mean I miss him, he’s kind of an idiot but he always like brightened up everything and made me snacks when I seemed down.”

He looked over to Danny, “Just a little empty on older sibling stuff I guess. I mean, you kind of probably know a little bit about that with Jane.”

Third wheeling. Was that what it was?

Maybe. Probably. It really felt the same with any of Michael’s friends. They were like…all football blokes and stuff anyway, so Danny always just figured he’d leave them to it. Nothing in common! Nothing to see here!

Anyway, Danny couldn’t focus on that because he was already focused enough on Being In Haley’s Room. Which was weird. Danny hadn’t even gone into his own sister’s room much. Not like Haley was his sister or anything but she was just another girl and going into girl’s rooms was weird. Which was kind of heteronormative, but also, just not an experience he’d ever really had and hadn’t really thought about it until he stepped over the threshold but now he was thinking about it probably too much and it was getting weird–

“Let’s, uh, go to the cafeteria? I was, uh–kind of craving Buenos Nachos.” He pat his stomach. Why did he do that?

“And it’s still nice enough to study outside on the quad a bit if you wanted? Or we could come back here afterwards. Whatever. I dunno how long Michael and Ashlee T. are gonna be.” He rubbed at the back of his head again.

Haley grinned at him and went over to her desk, “Awesome, I’ll just pack some stuff and we can grab some tasty nachos. Food always helps me think. The quad sounds really nice!” She put a few more notebooks sitting on her desk in her backpack and then slung it over her shoulder.

“Alright then, shall we go fill our stomachs and our minds?” God, that was a dorky thing to say but it was totally fine yeah. Danny was a friend, why would she try to impress him or something.

“To the cafeteria.” She all but skipped out of her room and waited for him to exit before she shut the door behind her. She walked alongside him to the cafeteria, nodding little smiles here and there to people they passed. She was pretty friendly with most people by now.

“So, what have you been up to lately?” Good start. Sure.

, blushing as he dropped his hand where it had still been raised from knocking. He rubbed at the back of his head. He wanted to say something like: it isn’t the same thing, but he didn’t want to hurt Haley’s feelings. If she was flirting. Maybe it was? No, it wasn’t. Well, he didn’t want to make it weird by suggesting she was flirting when she wasn’t.

Thankfully, she just stepped aside and he slipped his thin body in the space she’d left, beelining for her desk chair. He glanced at her roommate’s bed and saw it was empty and let out a breath before he sank down.

“Uh, I don’t think so? I mean…maybe?” Wow, weird. Did not necessarily want to think about his cousin’s sex life. “It’s Michael’s girlfriend. She’s nice but I didn’t wanna…interrupt their movie. They said I could join but, y’know, I think that was just them being nice.”

Danny picked at a hangnail. “Is it alright if I hang in here for a bit. I have my backpack, I can just do my homework. Or go to the common room? Or, I was kinda hungry…but you’re probably studying. Nevermind.”

“Ah the third wheel issue. A classic. I get it.” Haley had been pretty much a permanent third wheel to all her friends. She’d never found a bike of her own so she just kept getting tacked onto tricycle after tricycle.

“Oh, well, I mean, we can go get food. I wasn’t studying, I was just organizing stuff. Laundry day is always kind of a room organization day for me. So we could always like grab a bite or like order in and study in here or something.” She gave a shrug of one shoulder.

Honestly, having Danny in her room was strange, but not like a bad strange, just a new one. It was all new. The whole college experience. And she could check boys in her room off that. She wasn’t really sure what she and Danny were, they were just really good friends and campaign pals and beyond that she had no idea what feelings either of them had.

When Danny had walked into his dorm room to see Michael and Ashlee T. sitting on Michael’s bed, watching a movie, he decided that he had only dropped by to pick something up and was going to be meeting up with Haley for dinner.

It wasn’t that he didn’t like Ashlee T. Or cared that Michael had someone over. Just that–he was awkward and probably the worst third-wheel in the whole world. And if he just stayed, sitting in their room, it would be weird. He probably had a text on his phone from Michael, giving him the heads up, but he had a bad habit of swiping notifications away and forgetting about them. So, no worries, he’d just go study in the library for a bit or something.

He’d smiled, said a very stilted hello, grabbed something random off his desk: his sketchbook–and then turned around and left again. Smooth. Nothing weird about that at all.

Danny slinked back down the hallway, pausing at Haley’s door and…well, he hated lying. Soooo…he knocked.

And Haley answered.

“Oh, hey.” Danny blinked in surprise. “Michael has a girl in the room,” he blurted.

Haley had been luckily, just finishing up her organizing of her room after a fresh load of laundry. Why was the putting the clothes away the worst part. Sure she could fold them all and put them in neat piles but getting those piles to then the drawers was just such a hassle.

Regardless, she was just hanging out by herself. She was doing that a little bit more recently, maybe she was still sort of processing Jake’s departure and how she wasn’t just going to be Jake Long’s little sister anymore to newer people coming in.

She was definitely not expecting a knock at the door. Really, there were only so many options. It was either the RA, Vanessa or Danny.

And out of those three she thought Danny was probably the least likely, but there he was. She giggled slightly, “And there’s a girl in this one.” She teased him just a little bit, before stepping aside, “Did you get like sexiled or something? I hear that’s a big college kind of thing that happens.”

Campus Tour ~^~ [Darlong]

Danny liked that Haley shared things like that with him, even if it made her cheeks pink and then Danny’s cheeks pink like some kind of call and response. He just…well, his family had never really shared anything with him. He was kept out of the loop of just about everything. Because he was the youngest and, arguably, the weirdest–most awkward of the Darlings. (In his opinion, John was effortlessly cool, of course.)

And he liked the way she thought about things. It reminded him of how he’d riff with his internet friends about stuff just like this online. He was usually to awkward to do it in real life, not to mention, not clever enough in a moment. Sometimes, he had to think about it.

The question caught him off guard.

“Oh, uh–maybe?” Danny laughed a little and blushed deeper. He didn’t know why that felt like an embarrassing question, but it did. His eyes dropped to the title floor. “Sometimes I think things happen for a reason or a specific way…but then it makes me a bit sad. Like–certain things…why do they have to happen like that? Who is controlling it and what is their reasoning? But, it’s nice to think that way too. That everyone has some…kinda purpose.”

He shrugged. “I dunno, that sounds kind of stupid. Sorry.”

Haley didn’t really know the answer she was expecting. She actually wasn’t really expecting anything really. It was just sort of an offhanded comment but it was out there floating in the air.

She tried not to giggle at how red he got though. It was really cute how flustered he got and she suddenly felt like she knew how Vanessa felt when they first met. But his answer was a really good one all the same despite being so flustered.

She shook her head and reached over to squeeze his shoulder gently, “Oh Danny, it’s not stupid. Nothing you ever say sounds stupid. You’re way too smart for that. Well, unless you’re like trying to play a low INT high WIS character or something but still like, I think that makes a lot of sense.”

She pressed her back up against the nearby art wall to look at him, “I think there are like definite forces at play. Everyone has a balance of yin and yang and everyone has external things pushing and pulling them in different directions so it totally makes sense.” She tilted her head slightly, “Sometimes things just don’t go how you think they’re supposed to, but I think in the end, it leads towards some pretty great things. Like meeting you. I mean, like, I was covering a shift when you walked into the Comic Barn that day and I was just redoing stuff that other people had messed up, but then you came in and I like made a friend.”

“Is that what happened at the high school prom?” Vanessa snorted. “Mine was really fucking boring. I don’t even remember who won prom queen. Some boring normie.”

Inexplicably, she thought about how Candace probably won prom queen, because she was so preppy and annoying and all that. She pushed that thought immediately from her mind. That was a dumb thing to think, when she was here with Haley who she had 1) kissed and 2) looked super cute. Thinking about kissing Haley made Vanessa blush a little, but she looked up at the ceiling.

“I think I left early and got Dennys with my friends,” she said. “Which is probably less eventful than how chaotic yours sounded. But that’s okay! New memories — what’s a prom thing to do?” She nudged Haley’s shoulder with her own. “Photobooth? Punch? Dancing like a very awkward white person on the dance floor — me, I mean. Not you. You’re not white. Or awkward.”

This was going well.

“Oh yeah, I straight up Dragon’d on Ashley A, who was my pregnant date.” She waved her hand with a snort, “Don’t ask. It was a very dark period of my high school life. Or you know, do ask, just once I’ve had a drink or two.” She could joke about it now, how she got swept up in popularity last year that she would turn a blind eye to certain things, but she still felt a bit of guilt for having not stood up to her earlier in the year.

Haley giggled, it was kind seeing Vanessa just a little more flustered than her. She thought about it for a moment, “Well, I think we should get a drink, definitely. But also maybe we should capture our looks now in the photobooth before we sweat it off dancing like awkward people.” She teased her, poking fun at how weirdly she’d phrased things.

She glanced over and the line seemed to be thinning with more people going to the dance floor, “C’mon, we might just not have a wait.” She smiled and grabbed Vanessa’s hand without thinking to lead her through the crowd and towards the booth. She definitely wanted to remember this night. (Also like maybe she wanted to be really close to Vanessa in that photobooth).

I don’t think it’s silly.

Danny was so glad he caught himself before saying something stupid like that. Of course Haley didn’t actually think she was silly. It was a…joke. Or something. Obviously. Because Haley was the coolest person that Danny had met in town and she would know that. Her insecurities weren’t like Danny’s. He didn’t talk about them, because he wanted them to be as invisible as the rest of him. If someone talked about them out loud like that–they were fake, right?

That spiral lasted until Haley was complimenting him and then he went down a completely different spiral of: was she complimenting him? Did she actually think he was good at his art?

Danny’s ears pinked slightly and he hoped that the dim light in the hallway (the lights weren’t on so it was only the greyish overcast light from the classrooms filtering in) concealed the blush. He shrugged casually, trying to make it seem like it wasn’t a big deal. That he was good. Yeah.

He couldn’t help but snort at her accent, though, some of his nerves expelling in a fit of giggles as he shook his head at her.

“No, it’s way cooler than that. He’s blind! He also says he can predict the future but he claimed I was going to proposed to someone while wearing red shoes soooo–not sure how accurate his predictions are considering that sounds hideous.” That day in class had been extra embarrassing. “He’s super fun, though. And he knows so much. Can determine mediums just by smelling them. Even the difference between oil and acrylic paints.”

Haley blushed a little bit at her own terrible accent, which she knew was terrible and felt like really silly doing it at someone who was British but here she was.

“Oh wow.” Her brows rose, “That’s super cool! I mean not just the smelling paint stuff which I think might make me light headed.” She chuckled and brushed her hair from her eyes.

“I kind of love predictions and admittedly I do like own a tarot deck and do drawings for fun.” She gave a slight shrug feeling a little self conscious about it but also a lot of people had those interests so why should she feel weird about sharing this with Danny?

“I dunno, astrology and tarot and things like that are just like entertaining. I wouldn’t take the red shoes thing too literally. I mean it could mean a lot of things.” Don’t say blood. “Your shoes could be like, covered in berry juice or something like you went berry picking and proposed or like, maybe its Christmas and you’re wearing red shoes because of that. It’s just like fun to think about.” She gave a shrug and looked over at Danny as they walked through the hallway. “Do you believe in fate and all of that?”

Look, Vanessa still didn’t know if this was a thing — or if she wanted it to be a thing? She didn’t not want it to be a thing, but also it being a thing was a lot and she didn’t want to and —

Okay, breath, Vanessa! Just enjoy this random fancy dress event which the town had a ton of.

“Shall we go in?” She jauntily extended an arm to Haley, before bowing in an over exaggerated fashion. “I dunno if demons bow, but there ya go.”

Haley just grinned at Vanessa, oddly she was like kind of calm in this? Like she technically knew where they stood but knew that where they stood standing was like variable but that sort of comforted her. Like nothing was locked in and they could make this a date or totally like back away and never think about it again.

Her wings flickered behind her as she took the arm, giggling, “Ah yes, a bowing demon. I mean, they might not in general but hey, it’s kind of an ego boost to have a demon bow to you.” She joked a bit, her hands finding their way along the sleeves of the other girl’s coat, her cheeks blushing just a little bit.

It was her first real adult Swynlake thing. She was officially like allowed to attend the college side of things which was pretty exciting from what she heard from Jake’s tales, but also it wasn’t like her last prom experience wasn’t exciting or anything. She totally just like Dragon-outed herself and blew up to defend someone who was being treated unfairly and then had to deal with like the weird Ashley A consequences afterwards (which to be fair weren’t horrible they just kind of avoided each other and then she went off to do her own thing).

“Wow,” She breathed out, “So this is a real life grown up adult party, huh.” She teased and looked up at Vanessa, her wings gently brushing up against the other girl’s back as she leaned into her playfully. “Wonder if anyone’s going to try to steal the crown off someone’s head this year.”

Danny laughed at the wall comment. “Oh, yeah. It’s pretty wicked.” And it was.

PrideU wasn’t super well known for it’s art program. Danny had actually considered going to SCAD in America or the Arts University in Bournemouth…but his family needed him here. So that was where he was gonna be. It wasn’t a bad program at all, though it didn’t have as much of the shiny bells and whistles as those other schools.

However, there were things that made up for it. Like being near his cousins and sister. And the people he’d met. And the cool buildings. He would bet that AUB didn’t have a haunted library with a friendly ghost named Joanna that literally everyone knew about.

“Yeah, I mean–well, I’m in the digital arts program so most of the stuff I do is on computers or my tablet, but I took a landscape art class last semester with Professor Rafiki and that was wild. He’s like…amazing. It was really fun.”

Haley chuckled, “Right, yeah I guess that was kind of silly of me to ask about arts classes when that’s like your major.” She blushed a bit. “But you got what I meant. I mean, I know myself like digital art is so different than like holding a paintbrush or smudging things up with your hands to try to get the right texture.”

She quickly added, “Not that there’s anything wrong with digital art I just don’t really get like all the special pattern making brushes and stuff. I’m sure you’re really good at that.”

She walked alongside Danny, glancing at the various paintings. Oil, acrylic, print making, water color. “What was so wild about him? Was he one of those guys who really likes spin art and is like Jackson Pollock your way through the class, see what you can make of it!” She did her best British accent (which was not good).

“Oh.” Vanessa blushed. She felt it, all hot and heated in her cheeks. She was sure if she concentrated just a bit harder, it would manifest in front of her. Collecting your own reagents wasn’t easy… unless you were currently having a Moment with a Cute Girl ™.

“Well, I’ve thought about kissing you again too,” she admitted, very fast. This was also a very awkward conversation to be having in a comic book store, Vanessa realized, as someone came up behind her and cleared their throat. “So! Uh — well see you at prom, then?”

Haley’s cheeks heated up again and her ears made their appearance finally, pushing out through her hair really, really embarrassingly. “Oh... well yeah, great.” Sure, Haley, great. Great that you’ve thought about kissing me, super smooth reply.

She spotted the person coming up behind Vanessa and realized, right, she was still kind of on the clock. “Uh yeah, I’ll meet you there.” She gave a shy smile before she motioned for the customer to come forward so she could ring them up.

Prompromprompromprom time skip.

Oh god, this was actually happening. She was going to adult prom with Vanessa as like a sort of date but not really but also whatever they kind of wanted it to be. Although she was a bit more of the Angel in the situation, tonight she wanted to look hot and well, she didn’t think this called for her in a white dress.

She stepped into the prom, going towards where Vanessa said she’d be by the drinks and took a breath which promptly was forced out of her once she locked eyes with the girl she was meeting. Her heels made her closer to Vanessa’s height and in her much tighter than usual black sequined halter dress. She’d gone for something backless, one, for a certain appeal, and two, she’d done a ton of practice so that she’d be able to let her actual pinkish, purple magenta wings wings come out to add to a more hell-ish aethetic but still end up being her all the same and not have to worry about fabric annoying the base of her wings.

She crossed the room and breathed out with a smile, “Hey. You look... really, really great.” She glanced over the entire look Vanessa was currently wearing and felt herself just remain in utter disbelief that they’d essentially gone to this thing together because wow.

Catch That Letter || Ham [Summer Paired Thread]

Mim was getting so close to catching it. She could feel it. But after a particularly impressive (in her opinion) jump where her fingers scraped at the bottom of the little paper, it suddenly went zooming off to the side. “Perro hijueputa,” she muttered.

She had just started to run after it when she saw that another girl was standing up from where she’d been hiding. Witnessing Mim’s shame. Great. Just to add to today.

Worse? It was someone Mim vaguely recognized from Secondary and from rooming together on the spring break trip, although they hadn’t really talked. This was awesomer all the time. Could the earth swallow her up now before today got any worse?

But a moment later, Haley shot up into the air with some kind of epic leap and she had! the! letter! Whooping with excitement, Mim finished running over to her.

“Yeah! Thanks a bunch. Apparently it decided to not only be animated but a jerk and its been teasing me for the last four blocks. How did you do that? That was cool as hell!”

Haley desperately tried not to blush too much from compliments but sometimes when she wasn’t really used to them coming from certain people it caught her off guard, “Oh, that?” She let out a laugh (maybe a little too loud) trying to play it cool, “Dragon training and skills. Kinda comes in handy sometimes.”

Haley kind of knew Mim by name and could recognize her but honestly had no idea what her deal was. They were just kind of coexisting in secondary and didn’t run in the same circles too heavily.

She carefully moved her closed fist to hand over the fluttering thing to Mim. “That’s crazy. Do you animate stuff a lot when you’re working on spells and stuff? I know Vanessa does all sorts of interesting sorcery things but I’m sure her specialty is different than yours.” Honestly, she hadn’t seen a ton of Vanessa’s magic now that she reflected on it. A lot of it was talking about Dragons and trying hard not to make out with each other all the time. It was still fascinating to her though.
