“Ain’t gonna say no to luck,” she countered softly, planting a lingering kiss to his lips. “‘Specially not when it’s comin’ from ya.”

“You ought to slow down. You’ll work yourself to death.”

“Ain’t got time to slow down,” Arlain replied finally, looking over at the woman and offering her a small shrug. “Get to rest when either I’m dead or the dragons are. Whichever comes first.”

“Will you forget the head-slicing thing?” [Haaki]

A slight tweak of the corners of her lips. A hint of a reminder of her humor. 

“Not a chance.”

“A person can only take so much disappointment.”

“Don’t I know,” she mumbled quietly, eyeing the gates sorrowfully before starting up the steps toward Dragonsreach. “Hope things get less disappointin’ for ya.”

Arlain took the stuffed animal from his hands, and looked it over, gently running her hands along the fur and seams. It would go everywhere with her now, and she’d ask Hjolrin if she could cut a piece of an old shirt of his so she could tuck it in the chest of the bear, so she could smell him whenever the distance felt too great.

“Thank ya, Hjoll, I love it,” she murmured, looking up at him before pulling him into a firm hug. “I love ya more, though.”

“Did you travel far to get here?”

“Hm, not any farther than I’ve traveled before,” she mumbled with a shrug. “Worth it, though. In the long run.”

“Wait, where did you get that sweet roll?”

“Stall by the well is sellin’ ‘em,” the Nord said, nodding her head in the direction she spoke of. “Some of the best ones in town. Tell Joldi Arlain sent ya.”

“What are you working on?”

“Just checking on some equipment,” she replied, looking up at the woman. “Am I in the way?”

“Do you honestly expect me to believe that?”

Arlain stood her ground, keeping her hands close to her weapons, but didn’t draw them. After all, she wasn’t there for a fight. 

“Which? That I’m a Dovahkiin, or that I mean ya no harm?”

“I didn’t know you were going to be here.” [Haaki]

“Ya don’t know a lot of things, Haaki,” Arlain replied with a shrug of her shoulders..

“Would ya be interested in being my date?” (to Hjoll, of course)

Hjolrin thought he was hearing things at first. He had imagined that voice enough times as he wondered how he would survive to the end of this festival, or how he would escape. It wouldn’t have surprised him if he looked around and realised it was only a stranger passing by, addressing somebody else.

But no. There she was. Arlain. Battle-scarred, looking exhausted, and very much real. Hjolrin got to his feet, letting the pastry he had been picking at fall to the floor unnoticed, and wrapped his arms around her in the inevitable bear hug, where he stood in silence for at least a minute despite the people jostling against them. When he did move back, fractionally, it was only to say,

‘Think y’can take this as a “yes”.’ He stroked his thumb across her cheek and stopped short of the new scars. ‘Where have y’been?’

As much as Arlain wanted the surprise to be in good spirits, the embrace nearly brought her to tears. It had been so long. It felt like lifetimes. It probably looked like lifetimes. 

“‘Round,” she murmured, burying her face in the Nord’s chest, breathing in just to smell him, to make sure she wasn’t dreaming. That she had actually made it to the festival and he was there in front of her, arms around her.

“Didn’t wanna miss out... on anymore.”

💚 for Arlain?

💚: how does my muse feel about love? about falling in love? about being in love?

Before actually falling in love, it was never really something Arlain gave more than a passing thought to. Sure, love and all that it comes with is pretty great.

When she first started falling in love, it was exciting, albeit a little nerve-wracking. After all, the object of her affection (Hjolrin) wasn’t exactly an open or easy-to-read kind of guy. Her affections could very well only be one-sided, and then where would she be left?

Being in love, at first at least, was exciting and nerve-wracking, and wonderful all at once. But it’s also become worrying and stressful at times. With her change in moods and not being around as frequently as she’d like, Arlain fears there’s a strain on her and Hjolrin’s relationship; a strain that she may not be able to repair if she’s never home for more than a few days.

All-in-all, while Arlain sees love as a gift, and a wonderful gift at that, it’s something that needs to be upheld: something that needs to be worked with. You can’t just set it up and expect it to remain pristine and perfect, because it won’t. You have to put effort in to keep it strong and healthy, and it’s that effort and the results that follow that really make it all worthwhile.

#9 [Scars]

Arlain is no stranger to scarring.

Her earliest scars were from childhood accidents and have nearly completely faded. They vary from small scrapes to little or long cuts along her arms and legs.

Then came the scars from the dragon attack on her family farm. Arlain suffered burns on her thighs and abdomen from the attack, but they healed well and are only slightly raised.

She then received some scarring on her inner thighs, calves, forearms, and the palms of her hands from the dragon attack at the Western Watchtower near Whiterun. The scars on her forearms and palms are less noticeable than the ones on her calves and thighs.

Most recently, Arlain bears burn scars on the left side of her face, neck, shoulder, and chest, from a particularly lucky misstep off a slippery ledge as a dragon she had hunted down blasted a hot ball of fire at her.

#8 [Dovahkiin]

Having been discovered a Dragonborn, Arlain was promptly sent to the Throat of the World to hone her skills and properly train to fight the dragon menace.

Though initially nervous and hesitant, even Arlain can’t argue that the training has paid off. She is much stronger and more capable than she had ever been before, but it came at a price.

She hasn’t seen any of her loved ones in months. She sends the occasional letter when she has time, but otherwise spends most of her time hunting and fighting dragons, or simply alone.

This has weighed on her spirit heavily, and she’s lost most of the bright cheer and humor in her day-to-day life.

Amelie, having been carefully instructed by her mother, toddles towards and holds up a sweet roll bigger than the child's hands. 'For Ant Arrain! Happy Satalie!'

The Nord… hadn’t quite been herself since she returned to Whiterun. She seemed quieter… snarkier (if possible)… more distant. But damned if she wasn’t going to enjoy what time she had with her family. 

The child encouraged a genuine smile to reach Arlain’s face, and she picked up the girl with a sweeping motion, planting a firm kiss on Amelie’s cheek. “Happy Satalie to y’ too, big girl!”
