Prologue: As Dragon gazed out upon his beloved kingdom which he had grown up in, a wave of bitter regret gripped his heart. From afar off, he could see dragons gathered together around stone tables, enjoying the annual Festival of Light. He could hear the sound of merry chatter and laughter, and mugs being clashed together in cheerful toasting. The regret grew larger inside of Dragon.
Home...
He wished with all his heart he could be down there with the rest of his fellowship, enjoying the Festival with them. He had been a part of the Festival of Light since he was a wyrmling, and it had been a big part of his heritage. The dragons gathered together every year, and would participate in adding a single flame of their own fire to the Flames of Candor, as a sign of their loyalty to Draconia Kingdom.Dragon had never once refrained from adding his own flame to the Fire. It was a great source of pride for him to prove his loyalty to his Kingdom. But now?
I’m going to have to leave...thought Dragon. I’m going to have to be disloyal. A tear rolled down his cheek and he unfurled his great red wings, taking in the vast Kingdom one. Last. Time.
Mountains loomed in the distance. Caves were hollowed out inside the mountains by the dragons, to make private areas where the dragons could slumber in peace. If Dragon squinted, he could still make out the cave which he had hollowed out for himself. No turning back, thought Dragon as his heart ached with longing. You can’t return to the cave which you have stocked high with treasures and memories that have taken you years to collect. You can’t stay here with your brothers and sisters, nor can you live another moment under your father’s shadow. Stick to your plan. You need only the few essentials which you have stored away inside your bags. Leave now! And Dragon did leave. He flapped his wings hard and blinked away the tears which burned his eyes. Wind rushed towards his face as he flew higher and higher. Snow began to fall, and shrinking away into nothing, was the dear home in which Dragon would never see again…
Chapter One
The Story Begins
Dragon unpacked the last of his things inside then went out to see if he might find some food.
It had only been a day since he’d left Draconia Kingdom, but already he was learning that his newfound home was in a big forest full of friendly animals but also full of dangerous enemies. Animals were beginning to notice his presence, and he was beginning to overhear their talks.
“Did you hear? there’s a dragon in the forest!”
“A green dragon with sharp teeth, armored scales, and an arrowhead-shape at the end of his tail!”
“He has spectacular red wings! he’s really a sight to behold!”
Dragon would smile at their outbursts of excitement, but hadn’t introduced himself to them yet. He thought it would be best to keep low.
But “keeping low” was not as easy as he thought. Word travels fast, and soon the presence of a dragon in Shadow Forest made its way into the dark Kingdom of the Underland, where dwelt an evil band of power-hungry wolves. The leader of them all was Sire. He had threatening red eyes and a scary howl. Sire had always hoped one day to have Shadow Forest for himself. Shadow Forest was kingless, but the crops were fertile and much less tasteless than that of The Underlands’ food. Also the animals there were excellent slaves. He had already caused Shadow Forest some grief and had made small advancements into becoming their new king. He had almost gotten the woodland folk to their breaking point.
But now there seemed to be a flicker of hope that was foiling his plans to take over Shadow Forest.
“This dragon, whom everyone is talking about, better think twice before ruining everything I’ve worked for.”
“What would you have me do, my lord?” said Spearhead, bowing before his king. Sire licked his lips.
“Find this dragon. Gather a team of my most fearless fighters and slay him in his sleep.”
“Of course, my lord.” Spearhead bowed deeper. “it will be done. I’ll find where this dragon is hiding and bring you his head on a silver platter!”
“Understand this, Spearhead. I am well aware that this dragon could be the same dragon of legend who is supposed to overthrow the wolf tribe and destroy all my precious plans to take over Shadow Forest. I need you to do whatever it takes to end this dragon.”
“I will not hesitate to destroy him, my lord!” said Spearhead. “but remember that the dragon is also supposed to team up with a fox. And since we destroyed all the foxes centuries ago, it is impossible for the Legend to come true--”
“Just be quiet and do as I say!” snapped Sire. Spearhead growled but left the throne room without another word. He knew how his master could be with this kind of mood.
***
“Listen up,” said Spearhead, surveying each wolf with a dirty eye. “Our leader has instructed us to find the dragon living in Shadow Forest, and to kill him! If I sense that any of you are cowardly or incapable in helping me succeed in this task, I will have you report directly to Sire Fang himself! any questions?”
“Yes,” said a wolf, raising his paw. “Why have we been ordered to slay this particular dragon? we’ve already destroyed all hope of the Legend coming true by killing all the foxes!”
“I’ve already made a point of asking this question, Storm.” said Spearhead. “Apparently Sire feels that this dragon will stop him from taking over Shadow Forest. It’s a personal requirement, as well as a mandatory one.”
“Fine, fine,” said Storm. “Let's just kill this dragon so we can get on with our lives.”
It didn’t take long to find the cave where the dragon was hiding. In fact, a couple of rabbits confirmed that they had seen the dragon only minutes ago.
“I can’t believe we let them go.” grumbled Storm as they made their way toward the cave.
“Right now the only thing that matters is killing the dragon. We don’t have room to bring along Rabbit Prisoners!”
Dragon overheard the wolves talking. Good thing he had not been able to fall asleep. What was all this about Rabbit Prisoners? and who did they think they were, hoping to sneak into his cave and kill him? I guess not everyone in the Forest is friendly...
“ROOOAAARRR!!!”
“Hold your positions!” shouted Spearhead. They had found the dragon alright. And now it was blowing flaming fire at the wolves.
“The dragon’s awake! there’s no way we can--”
“Don’t back out on me, Storm! We are expected to take this dragon down for our leader!”
“ROOOAAARRR!!!!”
“He’s too powerful! we can’t get close enough without being burned alive! and now he’s coming out!”
Dragon stepped out of the cave and snarled at the wolves. He truly was an intimidating opponent. Even Spearhead knew they were no match for him.
“Flee, wolves! flee!” he cried, leading the pack away from the cave and back into the Underland. Dragon snorted out a puff of smoke out of his nostrils for good measure. Then he turned and sauntered back into his cave.
***
So the pack failed, and Sire decided that he himself should challenge Dragon to a duel, instead of putting his trust in his lowly servants. Coming face-to-face with Dragon, Sire was determined to destroy him. But in the battle, Sire lost his tail when Dragon blew fire at him and the animals all rejoiced when the wolf fled to the kingdom of the Underland.
“We are saved!” said some.
“Surely this dragon will protect us from now on!” said others.
And Dragon took their words to heart. He was growing fond of the animals of Shadow Forest. They even started to bring him pies and gifts to signal their appreciation of him, and he soon learned some of their names. He wanted to protect them! and Sire wanted to have revenge on Dragon after he had lost his tail.
But whenever Sire and his pack would try to sneak into Shadow Forest and take it back, there would come from Dragon's cave a loud “ROOAAR!” and burning hot flames would come racing out of his mouth. The other wolves were too afraid to face Dragon like Sire, so they would run away with their tails between their legs. “Fools!” Sire would say. And then he would have to face the mighty Dragon by himself. But the wolf leader was no match for Dragon. No matter what he did or how hard he tried, Sire could never beat Dragon, whether in battles of the wits, or duels of talent. Therefore the two enemies were at war.
Now, Dragon did not know it, but at the top of a high Hill with a waterfall trickling down it, there lived a small orange fox whose name was Martin. Martin had large ears that stood up high on his head. He had black, furry paws, and eyes of wild emerald fire. For as long as he could remember, Martin had had great trouble with the nasty Sire and his pack. They were always searching for him and trying to kill him. Martin didn't know why. But he had hidden from them inside his den, and they had yet to find him.
Then word got around that Sire had a rivalry, and Martin felt excited!
Animals were saying that it was safe to walk around Shadow Forest now because a fierce, brave dragon was roaming around, keeping the wolves away! Martin climbed out of the den and out into the morning light to see if the rumors were true. It was pleasant for once in his life not to have wolves immediately ambush him. The air smelt of freshly fallen rain. Birds were singing. Not a single wolf was in sight! Martin padded away from his den, his heart filled with joy. He dashed off into the woods, running faster and faster. His home was far away now. The world was his to explore! Then Martin tripped on something. He fell down a ledge and landed painfully somewhere far below. He got up and looked around. His cheerfulness was gone. He was in a very dark, very strange place. The trees seemed to sag sadly, and the earth beneath his paws felt hot and crackly. I’m in The Underland. Martin realized. I do not belong here. Snap! Snap! Snap! Something was running through the dead twigs that lay around the trunks of the old gray trees! That same something became a group of somethings which turned out to be a pack of wolves. When they saw Martin, they changed their course, heading right for him. “It's the fox! Get him!” One wolf was faster than the rest and bit Martin’s neck, throwing him roughly across the ground. The others barked in satisfaction.
“Dinner and a show!” laughed the fastest wolf, who happened to be Spearhead. A cheer started to ring out among the wolves, each one lifting their head to howl. Spearhead moved toward Martin again. “Wait.” Martin said. He got up shakily.
“Ha! I'm Spearhead, Sire's first in command. Why would I agree to wait when I can kill you now and be spared further punishments from my master? He has already sworn to kill me unless I can prove my worth to him.”
Martin was frightened but he had to do something. “W-well, I'm no good to your master dead, am I?”
“He wants you dead or alive. He doesn't care how we bring you to him.”
Martin closed his eyes. He knew he was in for it. There was no escaping his fate. He was going to die, right now, when he was only just starting to live. Then he heard something. It was a low, recurring sound which resembled a roar of a lion. Martin’s ears perked up. The fur on his neck prickled with excitement and fear and wonder. He opened his eyes. The wolves were scattering! They weren't going to kill him after all!
“It’s the dragon again! run, wolves! run!!”
Martin’s heart skipped a beat. A shadow rolled across his body and he looked up. It was a dragon! He ran as quickly as he could out of The Underland and back into the familiar woods of Shadow Forest, following the trail of the dragon. The smell of damp pine needles hit Martin’s nose, and he knew he was safe. Then the roaring sound came again. Martin turned and ran up his Hillside, his heart pounding crazily inside his chest. He slowed when he reached the top, and then he peered out across the land. That’s when he saw it. The biggest, coolest, most amazing dragon he had ever seen! it was heading right into a cave! Martin’s eyes widened. He couldn’t believe it! There really was a full-grown dragon right here in Shadow Forest! Martin had never seen one before, but right away he thought that this one was the most magnificent dragon that ever existed. Martin lifted his head out of the grass and watched closer, hoping the dragon would come back out. He was still for a moment, then he smiled a very fox-like smile. He had an idea. An idea that just might solve his wolf problem. He was going to try and become fierce like that dragon!
