thinking about that collider (i think) article back in january that was like 911 is hurting the show by failing to go one way or the other with buddie and intentionally keeping it uncertain and how mean-spirited it all feels and Yeah. like, actually i'd probably be okay with the uncertainty if it wasn't hurting the show. but it noticeably IS. in that tim in his own words essentially thinks baiting buddie is more thrilling than committing to it. but continuing to bait but not commit to it at this point leaves buck and eddie in a weird limbo story-wise. because it is the next natural step for them. and that's the way it's been Written. IS being written. but he won’t do it. which is how we end up with storylines being thrown at buck and eddie that have no real meaning past one or two episodes. it's like tim is scrambling for storylines to give them that aren't buddie canon But he doesn't care enough about those storylines to do them properly. let's kill off abuela. let's kidnap buck and have eddie drag himself through the desert to find him. let's give buck drug dependency. let's give buck a kid. let's stab eddie. and none of it really means anything in the end.

adding these tags by @littlespoonevan because Yeah. and like, i actually don't think in general that people do believe Canon is better. i mean no doubt there are people out there who do. but yeah i think the Main reason the idea of Buddie Canon is as big as it is now and why people are so set on it is because that's what the show has been leading everyone to believe. prior to s7 they had plausible deniability. but Now it's like, they were doing it. or they were at least giving the illusion that they were doing it. that's a thing they were doing. buck's bisexuality arc and first relationship with a man had Eddie at the dead centre of it. his ex-boyfriend called eddie the Competition and buck denied it by essentially admitting having feelings for eddie and then going to his sister about it who reiterated that it's not a crazy thing to think. and this all happened in front of our eyes on television. by doing that they lost any plausible deniability they had. like, if they wanted to keep the status quo where buck and eddie have an intense Best Friendship and they get to toe the line and push at the boundaries of that relationship without fully crossing over them then they should have Never Ever said the quiet part out loud lmao. because there's no satisfying way of doing that now. like, the reason the idea of Buddie Canon has become what it is now is because they crossed that boundary and Acknowledged it on television. and the article i mentioned highlighted this too. that they are trying to have their cake and eat it and it's not Working. because by doing so they've built up a level of expectation that simply wasn't there before. they've done this to themselves. they could have just kept doing what they were doing. but instead they opened the box and Acknowledged it. and there's no undoing that now. you wrote it this way. not following it to its natural conclusion at this point is just a) going to be deeply unsatisfying evidenced by the fact that, well it already IS. and b) piss people off way more now than it ever would have if you just hadn't done all that.

I don’t understand fics that characterise Eddie as slow to make friends, the man is friends with everyone. Maybe true, opening-yourself-up friends are less common, but he’s the only one at the 118 who is shown to have multiple social circles outside of them. He’s the one who befriended Tommy, he’s got his parents social circle, his firefighters poker group, his pickup basketball game, probably friends at Muay Thai and the gym. I bet he knows his neighbours, his local cashiers, baristas, his mechanic, etc etc. He’s a friendly guy!

it’s just that in s8, eddie said no offence but im straight. because he thought the hot priest was flirting with him. then buck said eddie is Straight. and a renter. so i can’t be in love with him. and now we’re in s9 and eddie is paying $2500 so that he can avoid going on a date. and every time a beautiful gorgeous woman flirts with him he makes this 🫩 face. and also he touched a man’s crotch and got called a princess and a fairy and got accused of murdering his bisexual husband because everyone in the diner saw them arguing like an old married couple. and he didn’t deny the husband part or the gay part but he did deny the murderer part. like. one of the things i thought about after watching 9x13 is how much buck and eddie unmask around each other. walk with me here. we have two men who for better of for worst, put on performances to a degree. buck who transforms himself in what he believe will be the most palatable version of himself to receive love from others. eddie, who does his best to perform as what he believes a good man and a good father would be (plus, of course, eddie himself saying verbatim he feels like he has to perform (re: dating)).

then we have 9x13. and also, honestly, the kitchen scene. but 9x13 in PARTICULAR. the "fight" that escalated during their drive and then into the dinner. buck being dramatic with the fork. raising his voice. yelling. pushing back. eddie, annoyed, showing his anger, showing his frustration, not holding back what he wants to say.

neither man ever really hold back in showing the "ugly" parts of themselves. the parts they believe will make them less receptive to those around them.

and its crazy bc it just reinforces that idea that they see the absolute best in each other. buck, considering eddie to be amazing, a hero, a silver star. eddie, seeing buck as someone who will give up every little bit of himself, even down to his scraps, for others. eddie, who jumps off the bridge so buck can't. buck, who says "he has a son. he's a father. don't hurt him. take me instead" because he knows how important eddie is to chris. how important that relationship is to maintain. it's just crazy.

like wow. this is your person. this is the person you can be your absolute worst with, but who also sees you as nothing short but your absolute best. even when you can't see it. them only acting this way with EACH OTHER adds such a depth to their dynamic. i was walking home from work like "wow. that's crazy. ya'll are some freaks"
