"Now let us see Ember."

"Yeah…Come on cape-boy," Dawn urged. "Can we see Ember when Charmander is done healing?"

"During the battle." Lance frowned.

"You ready, Charmander?" Lance placed her on to the floor. "Then let's do this."

Lance watched as the girl in front of him threw up a Poké Ball, which revealed a Caterpie. He smirked, and commanded Charmander.

"Run to Caterpie and quickly use Ember!" Lance called. Charmander toddled and dashed to Caterpie, and used Ember. Flames began to fill up her mouth, and she spat a fire ball out from it. It crashed into Caterpie and knocked it over.

"Yeah, redhead." Bill stuck his tongue out.

"Jeez…You’re not very sociable are you?" Dawn stared at Lance.

"I'm trying work out how to perfect Charmander's newly learned Ember." He frowned.

"Redheaaaaaaad!" Bill shuffled towards him. "How’s Charmander?!"

Dawn walked beside him while smiling. “Charmander is so adorable. And so is Bulbasaur. And Squirtle…”

"Charmander's just fine... what's it to you anyway?" Lance questioned them. "She's getting healed up in preparation for the battle outside, happening in around 20 minutes."

"Charmander, attempt to stop that Tail Whip with a Scratch!" Lance announced. Both attacks hit, and both Pokémon fell backwards. "Try to use Scratch before Squirtle gets up!"

"No! Squirtle quickly! Get up and use Tackle!" Dawn called out, but Squirtle was too late and Charmander won.

"I told you I'm going the be the Pokémon Master. I already am out of us three." Lance picked up Charmander. "I don't really need you guys with me, me and Charmander can handle ourselves. I'll catch you later, when hopefully you'll both be stronger and put up a real fight." He nodded his head and then walked forwards.

"Charmander, use Scratch on Squirtle!" Lance enticed a battle to start. "You guys going to let me do that?" He smirked, preparing for battle.

Dawn smiled and let Squirtle hop down in front of Charmander. “Let’s battle then!”

"We each have one Pokémon, so let's all battle in the same battle." Lance sneered, watching Bill step back and also get ready for battle. Rapidly, Lance called, "Charmander, use Scratch on Bulbasaur!"

"Stop." Bill held his hands forward. "We should wait for some Pokémon turn attack us, because there’s a gym in Viridian and we need training before we arrive."

"I’m not training for Gym Battles so I’m okay…But I do need Squirtle looking beautiful and strong in Contests…so let’s do that."

"Charmander, use Scratch on Squirtle!" Lance enticed a battle to start. "You guys going to let me do that?" He smirked, preparing for battle.

Dawn watched the Pidgey while smiling. “They’re so elegant…” she whispered and smiled.

"They probably only have Gust and Sand Attack, though. It's not strong enough to go to the effort to capture them." Lance entered Route 1 alongside everybody else, and watched the grass and trees around them. He was hoping a strong Pokémon would attack him, so he could capture it. Or he was hoping for the Rattata which bit him to return, so he could get revenge.

"Pathetic, I’ve been 2 meters out of Pallet. Then, I got bit by a Rattata and I ran home." Lance smirked, following a road which led to Route 1.

"But that’s only two meters," Dawn said and giggled.

"Two meters more than you've ever been." He stroked Charmander, who was still perched on his shoulder. "We need to get some training into our schedule, guys."

"Definitely. I like having rivals." Bill narrowed his eyes as Bulbasaur yawned. "How about you, redhead?"

Lance stared at him and said in a stubborn voice, “Fine. But only because Dawn wants me to.”

"Hey! I never said you had to! I don’t care if you’re my rival all I care about is being friends with Pokemon and becoming Top Coordinator," Dawn said and stuck her tongue out at Lance.

"Whatever, let's just go." Lance shrugged his shoulders and left the lab. He waited for the other two to follow him, which they soon did.

"I’ll have you know that I’m precisely on time." He pulled out his phone. "It’s 7:30 AM right now, and we were told to be here by 7:30." Lance smiled.

"Well you’re still here later than us," Dawn said and watched him. "I’m Dawn, by the way. And I guess you’re also here to get a free starter Pokemon?" She eyed Lance.

"I'm Lance. I'm going to be the ultimate Pokémon Master." He smirked.

"Can’t forget that men come just before." He stuck his tongue out. "Besides, we gotta wait for the redhead to arrive."

Dawn rolled her eyes and looked to the redhead who had come through the doors. “And there he is,” she said after watching him. “All men are so slow at getting to a destination. I only took a while because I had to do my hair.”

Whereas the normal awakening of him was the light vibrantly bursting through the windows and into his soil-coloured eyes, this time he got up himself without any assistance. He had reason to get up early, which was a rare occurrence for him, considering he lived a boring life of get-up-go-to-school-go-home-sleep-get-up everyday in Pallet Town. He dashed down the stairs and into his everyday clothes, which consisted of a navy shirt with tight jeans. He also wore a belt, a small cape-like accessory, grey socks and a pair of trainers.

"I'm off, it's the morning that I can choose which Pokémon I want to spend my life with! I've been waiting for this for so long!" Lance called, opening the front door. His father came down the stairs, followed by his mother.

His mother hugged him, then wished him good luck.

"I'll see you soon!" He lunged away and down the road towards Professor Oak's Lab.

He climbed on to Skarmory, and zoomed into the air.

"You really need to get a Pokemon you can fly on, Dawn!" He said back, sarcastically.

"I’m good thanks!" Dawn called back. She hated flying, and this meant she didn’t want to get any Pokémon which she could fly on.

"Best you follow closely behind then!" He thrust his point through the cold air, as Skarmory zoomed away.

"Gallade, Swords Dance! Glameow, Iron Tail!" A woman called from around 10 metres away. "Crash the attacks together!"

Dawn straightened. She knew the owner of the voice and turned in the direction it came from. “No way…” she whispered before taking off, running to the woman. “Zoey?! Is that you?!”

"Who's Zoey?" He asked.
