Algae (noun) – aquatic, photosynthesizing organisms
Algae (or singular “alga”) is a group of organisms once classified as plants. They photosynthesis energy from sunlight like plants, but they don’t have roots, stems, or some other features of plants. Some algae have just one cell, while others can have complex structures, like giant sea kelp. They live in a wide variety of aquatic environments from fresh to salt water to volcanic mineral springs! This mineral spring in the Longmire meadow is host to a thriving population of algae (green colors), along with iron-loving bacteria (orange/red colors). Where else have you seen algae living in the park?
NPS Photos. Description: Upper: Streaks of green algae thread through a mat of orange-red bacteria. Lower: A mat of green and orange bubbles ring a bubbling pool of water. ~kl

No more ‘it’s too dark outside’. No more ‘i can’t feel my hands’, ‘this bog is haunted’, ‘the stars should not be moving like that’, ‘the lynxes sound like people when they scream and some day they’ll realize I’m not half as tough as I look’. It’s a new year and I’m not going to make any more excuses for myself.
