“Have you, cousin?”

Auriel arched a dark brow, eyes of deep violet reflecting beneath the lamplight as she stood in the doorway, one hand resting on her hip as she looked Aerion over. She let another moment of awkward silence stretch between them before she finally entered the room, her silken skirts swishing around her legs with each step she took towards him. Lowering herself into the seat beside him, she plucked the freshly filled goblet from his hand, without ceremony, before he could raise it to his lips, claiming it for herself.

“I believe you may require another lesson in manners, lest you forget just whom you are speaking to.” Taking a long sip of the stolen wine, she relaxed back into her chair. “For the last time I checked, it was I whom the realm referred to as a dragon and not yourself. You would be wise not to forget yourself.”

slender fingers curl into a fist where the stem of his cup was previously held, violet eyes narrowing with a conflicting mixture of annoyance and anticipation as they observed her every movement. lips purse as she sips his wine ever the entitled little brat, he thinks. aerion sits forward, his elbows resting on his knees as the tips of his fingers tap against each other. his head cocks to the side, an incredulous laugh rolling off his tongue.

"a pretty moniker for a rather docile targaryen princess and nothing more," he says smoothly, his tongue swiping across his lower lip before his teeth are digging into the soft flesh of it. aerion smiles then, sitting up straight as if doing so would help him maintain his composure. his eyes flicker to the cup of wine once more. "do you presume you are immune to consequence because i call you my cousin? there are those who committed transgressions far less severe than stealing my wine and still suffered greatly for it." a single brow is raised, though he does not see his threat through. not yet.

you aren’t slick about whatever you think you’re hiding. glass shatters in your midst, blood spills, children scream. like some of your friends, your personality of choice is entirely artificial. the difference between you and them is that you can get away with it. you’re unknown, perhaps even to yourself, and your goals are complex and unknown. anyone stupid enough to fall for you is setting themselves up to be frustrated and confused, owing to your being ultimately unknowable. i hope you can find an identity that makes you comfortable.

Your death will at least make way for a king more fit than you, was his reflexive thought, and the corner of his mouth twitched before he ultimately decided to say nothing. As a child such brazenly provocative words may have been enough for him to snap back; since then, he had at least managed to somewhat control his wrath (for now).

His eyes drifted past his brother, apparently lost in thought. "Are you so eager to die?"

It had been many years now since he looked up to Aegon as though he was an infallible hero, and in those years the love between them waxed and waned until now he hardly knew how to feel about his brother. There was still love, yes, but even more there was turmoil in his heart. Was he envious of Aegon's freedom? Did he loathe his brother's irresponsibility? He did not want to be Aegon by a long stretch, yet he could not help but imagine what could've been had he been the firstborn.

"Celebratory. Mm." His gaze flicked down as Aegon prodded at his chest, and he debated seizing him by his wrist then. It did seem very appealing, and in his years he grew to learn that such was the only way he get through to his brother, save for some divine moments of mental clarity. And so he did, his grip on Aegon firm, but not enough to injure. "You let your guard down too easily, brother. It is of no benefit to me or to the kingdom to see your throat slit in your quarters by the whore of Dragonstone."

I don't want you dead; words he could not say.

Instead, he continued, his voice ever soft and cold as he dropped Aegon's wrist. "You are the king now. It is time you take rein of your vices."

the question drains some of the light from his eyes, silver brows furrowed as he stares blankly at his brother for a long moment. then the corners of his mouth quirk upwards and he lets out a humorless laugh. "do you believe i usurped our own sister on the account of simply wanting to be king?" the title never mattered to him as much as it did to aemond. yet when his mother and ser criston sat him down and spoke of how rhaenyra would end up putting them all to the sword himself, his children, helaena, daeron, aemond there was nothing else left to be said. it had to be done.

he would assume his place on the throne to protect them.

his solemn thoughts were interrupted by the tight grip of aemond's fingers wrapping around his wrist, the golden color of his irises flaring like dragon fire. not even the wine that filled his belly could quell the anger that simmered beneath his skin. but it was not just that, it was much more complicated. it was an emotion he refused to put a name to, let alone convey it willingly through his actions: he was hurt. and it was true what they said... wine had a way of removing ones better judgment.

"not a single one of you ever thought that i could be a good king. not mother," aegon begins. "not father," he continues. "not you." his voice cracks the slightest bit as he snatches his wrist away.

"it is no secret mother favors you. she always had long before you lost your eye." aegon shakes his head, jaw clenching as he forces his gaze away from aemond; unshed tears gathering despite his best efforts. "but it it necessary that you find any moment you can to remind me of that? is it not enough that you have her love? is it not enough that you are aemond and i am myself?"

the lord of oldtown sits poised at his table, a variety of crushed dried herbs and flowers set out before him. he does not immediately grace the person before him with his full attention, instead focusing on packing the herbs further down into his pomander with a pestle. "you have traveled a long way," he murmurs with an even tone, his gaze finally lifting to meet the other's. "i trust your purpose for being here is worth the effort."

"It is my wish to not see our king dead within a fortnight of his coronation." Because despite all the bitterness, the envy, the indignation that he carried with him through childhood and into adulthood, Aemond still wanted to see his brother upon the throne (he thought). It was what Aegon was born for, what his life had been leading up to; all the times their mother nagged him and pushed him to study and train, all for this moment. For the day Aegon would sit upon the Iron Throne and aggrandize the legacy he would inherit.

Yet here he was instead, spitting in the face of this honor, downing his cups as if there had ever been anything in his life so miserable he needed to drown it with drink. What could he complain of? That he needed not sell himself as a political alliance, needed not dilute the blood of his children with the blood of Baratheons? That their mother so clearly favored him simply for being the eldest son? That he could waste his days with drink and sex and merriment, and still be king?

And those boys—Aemond did not think he could truly call them men—had been elevated to the kingsguard, yet he doubted they could best him in combat even with all three upon him at once. It was as though Aegon saw this as some kind of game to play, some sort of jest he might've played as a child. Because that was what he still was, really wasn't it? A petulant little boy who knew nothing of the honor he had been granted and the privileges he held, while he would always remain a second choice. At best he would be elevated to Hand, should their grandfather ever pass away, but never the seat he truly deserved.

He laughed, too, but it was not in amusement, and the palm of his hand fell upon the . "Do you find all of this to be very funny, brother? I expected little from you to begin with, yet you still find a way to amaze me. At least that is another talent to add to your repertoire of being a sot and a sluggard."

a contemplative hum sounds from aegon, eyes narrowing as he keenly observes his brother despite how difficult it was to focus with his head spinning from the wine. aemond: always so proud and so boringly rigid, even in the comfort of a private chamber. aegon briefly wondered if he ever tired from being perfect. the perfect student, the perfect swordsman, the perfect son, the perfect brother, the perfect heir. how fucking exhausting.

one might be able to consider aemond's words of caution sincere though aegon knew better than to believe that. how weak their house would look if his kingsguard could not fulfill the one duty they were given: protect the king. appearances meant everything to aemond, more so than a genuine concern for aegon, or so he assumed. "once the fortnight passes, shall i presume my death will be acceptable to you?" he raises a brow as the question is posed, casually testing the depth of his brother's loyalty.

though he did not do it on the suspicion of expecting anything less than blind devotion from aemond; he did it for the sole purpose of garnering a reaction from his brother because provoking him was the only sure way that aegon received the attention he sought.

aegon rolls his eyes before letting out a rather dramatic groan. "good for nothing," he mutters as he unsteadily crosses the room to fetch the carafe of wine himself. however, instead of returning to his chair, he remains to stand face to face with aemond. sure, he was much shorter and weaker than his brother but the way that the smallfolk cheered when he was crowned gave him some semblance of misplaced confidence. "it is of no surprise to me that you consider a celebratory drink a testament to my inability to fulfill my role. you " aegon pokes at aemond's chest with one finger. "are so predictably and dreadfully dull, brother." aegon smiles then, patting the spot he pokes twice before allowing his palm to rest there for a short time. for a moment, aegon even convinced himself he drank tonight for any other reason than to forget of the path that lay ahead of him. usurper, some would say, though the truth was he just wanted them all to make it out of this alive.

his hand finally drops then to the carafe between them. the elder of the two foregoes the need for a cup and brings the carafe to his lips as he stubbornly stares at aemond, drinking straight from it before extending it in his brother's direction. "your sour mood requires remedy. drink."
