We use metaphors all the time. And there is a good reason for it:

they are useful to communicate abstract or complex ideas and help you build understanding and shape conversations.

We have the experience that messages drawn out as a metaphor, are made to stick. They help people to visualize and to remember the story more easily.

It’s like a common language with a visual vocabulary that makes your message come to life.

How to draw your future

Do you want to become that one person out of ten that can make change happen? Use a drawing to get what you want!

It has been proven more than once: people who draw out their vision and ambitions are more likely to become successful than those who don’t. It’s quite simple and straightforward.

First, draw where you are today (current state): What does your current reality look like? What do you see/hear and what’s happening?

Next, draw your desired reality. Where do you want to be in a year? What does success look like?

In between both, you have a roadmap for change. When you see it, you can believe it and finally, you can act upon it. Define the steps that will bring you closer to your goal.

However, in a challenging facilitation process or conversation, clear guiderails can play a very powerful role. And that’s exactly what a template can provide.

What is a template?

It’s a tool… a visual representation to support a process or a conversation.

Think inside a box

Who likes to fill out a form…, or to think ‘inside a box’?

Most people will say they don’t like it.

However, in a challenging facilitation process or conversation, clear guiderails can play a very powerful role. And that’s exactly what a template can provide.

What is a template?

It’s a tool… a visual representation to support a process or a conversation.

To be clear:  they are not there to replace the skills of the facilitator or to take over the thinking process of the participants. Consider it as a guide to help people explore their own ideas. When we use templates, everyone’s contributions are gathered, no matter their role, and even the shyest person can contribute their ideas.

In the book ‘The World of Visual facilitation’ (which is by the way a must-read when you are working or entering the field of visual facilitation), Lynn Carruthers gives us interesting tips on how to use and design templates.

Design your workshop or meeting first – then think about templates.

Ask yourself the following questions  

Make sure the design of the template is clear:

Don’t use too many templates in a meeting or process

Will the template enable a better conversation about complex issues by providing a simple structure?

Will the template help the group achieve their outcomes or reach a consensus?

Will the template allow you to complete the workshop with fewer facilitators?

Space each question and task – some might be bigger or highlighted, some may need a hard line, others a dotted line to indicate a flexible boundaryless space. Be mindful about the space you provide.

Indicate the flow of the template: where should they start and what are the next steps? You can do this with numbers, arrows etc…

Make sure that the questions and instructions are simple

Did you know that each version of Drawify is internally named an artists’ name? “Pablo” was how we named Drawify 1.0.  Yes, of course, you know which Pablo we have in mind!  And the reason for choosing “artists’ names” needs no explanation!

How to build your visual story?

Although I have been working for more than 10 years as a visual storyteller, I still think it's a challenge to translate a message into a drawing. It's not because you bring drawings together that you have a good visual story. Fortunately, I had the opportunity to work with Lily. Lily has been working for decades for magazines. When she looks at my drawing, she always asks me “Axelle, where do you want my eyes to go to, what's the one thing that people should remember looking at your drawing?” And that's a perfect question because that's how you should build up your visual story; you should think of a cover of a magazine. So what do you see when you look at the cover of a magazine? You see a title. A title that draws the attention. Below you very often see a subtitle. Then mostly you see drawings or pictures, and then you see smaller caps, smaller information that gives some context and backgrounds. And that's how your eyes go through the cover of the magazine. It might not sound familiar to you, but I bet you very often make PowerPoint presentations and it's more or less the same thing. You start with the title, then you have subtitles on your slides and then you have your bullet points. Except that a visual story is much more attractive and visually compelling than the average PowerPoint. So that's exactly how you should build up a visual story: just use everything you know and bring it to one drawing.

10 Tips for Visual Storytelling

Making a drawing is not the same as telling a visual story.

It's not because you bring beautiful drawings together, that your messages come across in the right way. Many things can 'go wrong'.

Our Drawifier Ben Crothers from Australia shares his 10 tips for visual storytelling:

Get your story straight. Know what message you want to bring across. And start with why.

Connect with your audience. Know who you are talking to and translate your message into their language. Use words and drawings that appeal to them.

Use less drawings, to tell more. We have very often the tendency to add a drawing to every word. That’s not necessary. A simple drawing, attracts more attention.

Be consistent. Choose a specific style of drawings, a specific font, specific frames… Our brain is always looking for patterns so make it brainfriendly.

Indicate emotions. People are attracted by people, and even more, by emotions. Use drawings that express emotions.

Lead the eye with lay-out: Respect the standard lay-out patterns we know.

Work clockwise, or from left to right…

Choose color consciuously: Being colorfull is beautiful. However, the use of many colors can increase the complexity of your drawing. Combine warm and cold colors to keep the balance.

Create depth and meaning with backgrounds.

Lead the eye with arrows: use elements to show the reader how to read your drawing. This can be done by arrows, numbers, lines,...

Separate ideas from each other by using frames. This brings structures and enables readers to see the different elements of your story.
