Thunder & Lightning: Part One
A look into the part one of the Wonderboy & Bolt crossover.
Milestone Forever
It was a tough decision trying to come up with what the last image should be in this series I started, but I felt there was no better note to end on than an homage to where it all began. Here are some of the other iconic characters to come out of the Milestone Comics universe: Rocket, Icon, Hardware and of course Static. And there was so much more Milestone had to offer beyond these four.
I want to thank everybody for the love, the support, the follows, and the shares that have come my way since doing this little experiment. I’m glad I was able to share my love for the character with you all and the response has been heartwarming. I couldn’t even fit in all the different versions of the character that I enjoyed so make sure you go out there and show some love to the many other artists who keep representing our boy Virgil.
Static Electrogenesis
This Static is based off the 2015 short fan film Electrogenisis, directed by Harjus Singh and written by Leon Langford. In it we follow an older Virgil Hawkins who’s retired his title as superhero after tragedy and is living a normal life as a high school professor who must learn to embrace his powers once again. It’s a very intriguing concept for the character and is worth checking out.
Static Black Out
Today’s Static is from the fan made short film Static Shock: Black Out. Made in 2011 and released in 2012, this short was written and directed by Stefan Dezil who also portrayed the titular role and it follows Virgil Hawkins first outing as a superhero. If you haven’t seen it already you should definitely check it out.
Jason Reeves Static
I had a very busy weekend so this one’s late but it’s still Sunday where I am so it still counts as today’s Static. This design of a very fashion forward Static is based off of artist Jason Reeves’ creation. This is just a very stylish and dope look for the character, it’s completely civilian but has the strong complementary colors working for it and the little lightning bolts on the shoes are a nice touch. (Unfortunately I left out the earrings because I forgot them but you can check them in Jason’s original pic) Don’t forget to give Jason a follow to support his art and endeavors.
Jamal Campbell Static
This Static is based off of Jamal Campbell’s aka Pryce14 original design. I really dig the long braid and the long shirt with baggy pants combo. It’s a very interesting and sleek style that I think is a different direction for Virgil but still fits. Be sure to support Jamal’s work and give him a follow.
Paris Alleyne Static
This drawing is based off of Paris Alleyne’s original Static design. This one stuck out to me because I liked the look of the hooded jacket with the striped yellow interior. It’s a simple element but is a cool kind of subtle fashion feature that makes this take stand out for me. Go follow Paris to keep up with his work.
Samir Barrett New Static
Since it’s my birthday today I figured I’d go with my current redesign of Static. This design was my idea of an updated Static fit for an animated series and is apart of an idea I’ve had for a while of a cartoon about Static and Rocket. You can expect to see more of him as I’ve got plans brewing for him in the future.
Samir Barrett Tribute Static
On this day 7 years ago story telling legend Dwayne McDuffie passed away. His loss had an immeasurable impact on countless individuals who he had inspired and entertained over many years. When Project rooftop put an open call out to artists for Static tribute images this was the design I offered. Looking back it wasn’t one of my stronger designs and I remembered struggling to come up with something that would be good enough to submit. Even though I wasn’t completely pleased with how it ended up I appreciated project rooftop for displaying and it will always serve as a reminder for when a bunch of artists and fans came together to show their love for a great man.
Khary Randolph Static
Today’s drawing is kind of a painful one because this is not the initial drawing meant for today. The first drawing I had was colorful and dynamic and I put several hours into it but last night after it was completed the program crashed and lost the entire file. It was supposed to be a special pic because today is Dwayne McDuffie’s birthday but unfortunately all the time and effort into that piece is gone. So I have to offer this replacement drawing for Khary Randolph’s Static design. Khary is one of my favorite artists and his design sticks pretty true to the most common Static design but still manages to feel unique and iconic, I only wish that I could’ve shown everyone the first version of it as even I was impressed with how it turned out. But what’s done is done and we have to move on. You should still make yourself familiar with Khary’s work and amazing career.
Nat (Bluestraggler) Static
This drawing is based off of another Static tribute, this time designed by Nat aka Bluestraggler. I always thought this design was solid and well thought out. I like how streetwise he comes off and appreciate the little glow the dreads get when he charges up. There was a lot of thought and consideration put in this design and I think it shows. Go ahead and give Nat a follow to see more of her fantastic artwork.
Daniel Irizzari Static
This drawing is based off of a Static tribute designed by comic artist and illustrator Daniel Irizarri. I always thought this design was pretty neat with how it combined a superhero and casual look together that meshed really well and stood out as it’s own thing. The overall style in general is very cool and pretty unique among the many Static interpretations. Be sure to follow Daniel to stay up to date with his awesome work.
Coran Stone Statik
This drawing is based off the really dope original design from Coran “Kizer” Stone. The idea behind it is that “Statik” is Static’s daughter in the future of the Batman Beyond universe. I’m just a big fan of how simple yet futuristic the design is and would be down for seeing something like it actually come to the comics. Make sure to follow Kizer’s stuff and show him some love.
Rashad Doucet Static
This fun new look was a design thought up by artist Rashad Doucet in his own Static tribute. Rashad is great at coming up with cool and energetic hero designs and his take on Static makes a cool, hip, almost animated style version of the character that I think would work great on screen. Do yourself a favor and go follow Rashad to keep up with his wonderful art.
Marcus Williams Static
This dope design comes from illustrator and Tuskegee Heirs creator Marcus Williams. Marcus has a great portfolio of young black heroes and characters that are so vibrant with life and character, and his Static design was no different. This version of Static was a really fun design to draw but that’s because all of Marcus’s designs are really fun. You should definitely check out his work and support his efforts.
Ronald Wimberly Static
This Static tribute design comes from ‘Prince of Cats’ creator and artist Ronald Wimberly and is high up there as one of my favorites. It’s a design that’s full of character and manages to feel casually cool but kind of gritty at the same time. It’s a dope take on Virgil’s fashion sense and is the kind of thing I’d love to see more of. Please go follow Ron to keep up with his great work.
Kris Anka Static
Another tribute on Project : Rooftop for Dwayne McDuffie, this design of Static was done my artist Kris Anka. This simple but bold design gave me a bit of a Black Lightning vibe but still felt uniquely Static. I still admire the original drawing for visually giving a very dynamic and heroic statement. Please go follow Kris to keep up with his fantastic art and projects.
