after two official tries and several unposted attempts over the course of almost 8 years, i think im calling dreadnought despair, er... mostly dead? BUT im bringing this blog back! ill be picking stuff to answer from the askbox (keep in mind i have a job and im getting old lol) as well as just drawing the kids bc i miss them

i also feel pretty bad about where i left off, so i'm considering finishing out chapter 1 (if i can remember how i had all the code set up 😬) but it would take A While. so heres a poll

im sure this cancellation isn't a surprise to anyone but i just wanted to get this out there for my own peace of mind

it has nothing to do with the wonderful folks who supported me through the years and everything to do with my mental health, getting older, and frankly poor story planning. it's a classic case of a project that never had a strong outline and thus ballooned in scope as it went-- you'll see what i mean when i start trying to answer asks about what would've been the endgame LOL. and ill do my best to answer some stuff, but there are some unintroduced concepts and characters that i would like to save for other stories so i may be vague about parts of it

even if it was masterfully planned, though, it still would've been hard to really pick up again-- I started this fic in college when I was at my most suicidal, and the reboot happened in 2020 which, well anyway,, im in a better place now with a loving husband, a stable job, a healthier relationship with my queerness, and multiple mental health diagnoses and medications. im proud of what i did accomplish with dreadnought, and im grateful to it and the community for getting me through some miserable times, but it's still a reminder of those times in and of itself. maybe by officially shelving it i can move on

long time listener, first time caller! did any of the characters have beta versions that were drastically different to how they turned out in the final version? (designs, fates, power roles, etc)

MAN i wish i still had the dreamselfy designs from when i was originally planning the cast… not everyone had one but most of the characters i designed specifically for the fic did. pour one out for dreamselfy

both in visuals and backstory, though, nik has changed the most from his original incarnation! so much so that in fact… spoilers under the cut

… he became a separate character entirely! keep an eye out for posts about the mastermind(s) and nik's backstory :)

spoiler explanation:

minor injury from playing volleyball or something. after word got out to the dreadnought about The Tragedy they were in a hurry to get everyone in the cryogenic pods with little regard for what they were wearing at the time. hence everyone wearing their costumes or iconic outfits-- they were getting ready for their ultimate talent exams. it's only been a couple days since the injury from kapono's point of view so it still hurts, and he doesn't remember where it came from so he thinks it safer to keep the bandage

oh that is WILD. I HAVE to know the Ping thing, since I can see why that got the fewest votes...though considering the mastermind/mole situation, I guess you could stick an extra human in some secret rooms and have none of the others (able to) question or find them, so that's my baseline guess. It'd be REALLY funny if it was somehow Tiffani though. Also, if I may, was that going to be an endgame reveal or come out earlier? Actually I'm curious about the timeline for when we'd have learned the other big things too since there are a lot, if you plan to go into that...

oh see that's a really good guess! that's the like. logical reasonable way to have ping be a human. but no, uh, well you'll see,

ch2: serial killer fakeout (yall are not ready for this one)

ch3: victim accuses murderer from beyond the grave, someone's mom gets executed, 20 yr timeskip (happens before the story starts but this is when they find out)

ch4: protagonist switch (temporary from tim to mecha-ishi), ping is a human

ch5: yusra has a gun, actual serial killer (probably would've showed up here towards the end? or maybe ch6)

ch6: 16 masterminds (foreshadowed throughout and there were planned to be interludes from their POV in between chapters of the reboot? but not explicitly confirmed until here), despair mole survives game, buble on the mm megamix playlist

a lot of other stuff happens too these were just the funniest ones out of context for the poll
