here's jaime breaking up with brienne, the "ugly stupid stubborn wench" he never even courted, because she insulted his honor by assuming he'd do exactly the kind of thing he's been known to do. obviously, cuckolding the king with his own sister, letting his incest bastards steal the iron throne and crippling an innocent little boy to save his own ass is just fine, but giving this woman the biggest bribe imaginable to get her to do cersei's bidding is suddenly too far and he would never.
here's jaime forgiving her on literally the same page, by committing her name to history forever.
jaime and brienne canonically being the two bozos sitting on the fact that there is a nuke under KL. omg they should call the westerosi explosive disposal unit instead of yearning for 40 pages
shes a woman who minds her business
shes canonically too distracted by jaime cock and balls instead. kl is so fucking doomed man
when the true hero of asoiaf brienne of tarth completes the historically progressive act of burning down kl i will cheer !!!
Brienne at Bitterbridge!

There’s a post I found the other day (but I lost it and can’t find again) talking about how they didn’t agree with the very established headcanon that Jaime would call Brienne “wench” as a term of endearment because after Ronnet, he not once think of her as Wench ever again (it’s always either Brienne or my lady or lady Brienne).
Made me think about it. I do love using wench as a term of endearment in fics, but I also kinda agree? Idk, but I’m sitting on it.
I think however when Jaime is being really sweet and affectionate in an honest way, he would call her “Sweetling” or “my Sweetling”. Absolutely love that headcanon for them.
THE KINGSLAYER CLUB BY LOCKWQQ.
The sobs that Brienne heard were all her own. When she realized that, she threw down her knife and shuddered. “I’m sorry that I never trusted you. I don’t know how to do that anymore.” — (Brienne IV, AFFC)
art by @flargied, can't believe i forgot to post my commission here!! thank you so much again!
it goes well with your eyes
the whole brienne deserves better than jaime thing is hilarious in a canon context, especially when people frame it as if it's a result of a self-esteem problem or deliberately choosing unattainable men or whatever. because she canonically rejects two suitors who actively want to marry her, beating one to a pulp and threatening to geld the other. she's like i want the hottest man in a hundred mile radius or i'll die alone actually

when asoiaf said either your story will go unrecorded in history and that is violence or your story will be made into an ideal or a warning and that is violence and when it said power is an illusionary thing but it is real and when it said gender and class are both performances utilized to perpetuate an unjust system and when it said dismantling such systems are not easy and it will not happen without violence and when it said the youth will inherit a world destroyed by the older generations and their only choice will be to adapt and rebuild and when it said vengeance is a cycle and catharsis is a lie and only you can stop it and when it said hope and idealism is worth fighting for and when it said over and over and over again atrocities beyond your imagination will happen next to you and to you and the only thing you can do is get up the only thing you can do is keep going despair is the ultimate crime
Imagine reading this and thinking it’s grimdark.
i think its vv frustrating when ppl r like 'but I find brienne beautiful 'bc its like. so blatantly not the point. like the text isnt asking u if u think a butch w broad shoulders thin hair and freckles is the most attractive woman to u in the whole wide world its asking u even if brienne was the ugliest woman u ever seen in ur life would u still respect her. would u still call her a good person for her good deeds despite how she looked. would u value her appearance over her character. like ur not engaging w the text atp
im not exactly surprised but it is kind of nuts to me that in the last couple months since that GRRM interview, this fandom is just straight up refusing to reckon w what he meant when he says the books’ ending will be a lot less happy than the show lol like if anything ppl are constructing happier endings for their faves bc they think he confirmed they’d live - which he literally fuckin didn’t 😭 at most a handful of ppl are shrugging at the idea that a character they didn’t care for anyway might die and that’s it. idk. what does tragedy even mean to ppl. do yall really think he just meant ‘much less happy but not for anyone u care about’. like once again the only person im sure survives atp is bran
the problem persists basically w ppl resenting anyone who actually tries to think about what tragedy might mean for a particular character bc that’s somehow demonising them or undermining their character development or whatever. like who knows if we’re ever getting those last books but it’s so dumb that whole conversations about tragic potential are essentially considered unfair to the characters because don’t they deserve better than that like pls this story has never been about anyone deserving anything
To be frank, if my faves get an ending that isn't stupid as fuck, I will be happy, even if it's tragic. Basically none of the characters who survived the show got a happy ending because none of their endings made sense, I can't think of a single one that worked. it just returned them to where they all were in Season 2 of their character arcs and discarded the rest and then told us this is the happy ending, and it just felt empty and hollow. I'd rather some of them die in a story that makes me feel something than live on like that. So I think it will be a happier ending for me, in that sense.
But a happy happy ending, like, everybody lives? Everybody gets what they want? You know what story you're reading, right? I think some people are thinking he will reverse the dead characters as a kind of revenge on HBO for never doing what he wants, doing the opposite, but if anything he's going to make it even darker instead. The books are a separate canon at this point so it doesn't impact the $$$$ I mean universe at all, and in the books there's no Q-Ratings or execs to stop him. He's gonna burn down Westeros, guys. It's gonna be apocalyptic.
Reading Jaime x Brienne again and thinking about how Jaime had done all the typical “romantic highlights” of historical romance heroes for Brienne:
Risked his life to save hers? Yes.
Gift-giving of the highest order? Yes
Defending her in public? Yes.
Recognizing and loving her for who she is? Yes (the lady / knight duality).
Secret sharing and confession of the past? Yes.
Cementing their connection in writing, in one of the most important historical documents for knights? Yes.
Facing a moment of choice between his past lover and the present? Indirectly, yes (as he left with Brienne and chose to not return to Cersei).
My man speed ran the entire romantic arc without even realizing he is in love.
