Sakura Monogatari
This is it. My magnum opus, I’ve been working a week and a half getting it ready, and now, it’s finished 8D!!!!
Again, inspired in the wonderful characters created by @tamarinfrog, helped by my friend @iyasplash (thanks for being my beta!), I give you a sweet story about my favorite squid pairing: Cherry Blossom (the title itself more or less translates as “A Cherry Blossom Tale”). Make sure to play the provided BGM for added atmosphere ;)
Without further ado, enjoy =D!
[BGM: Risa]
The afternoon was quite sunny in Inkopolis plaza, and Turf Wars were as lively as usual. However, there was a certain green inkling who still sulked around, even with his friend trying to cheer him up.
–So… it seems you’ve got a devoted fan, huh? – Daisy Valencay wasn’t the subtlest girl ever, but to be fair, her friend was pretty dense when it came to these things.
–W-what?! What do you mean? – Sorrel Livarot was not Petal Splash’s most energetic member, and being the only one of his team under B rank didn’t help. His head was still on the recently finished match, which ended on a very close win, since he didn’t get to fully charge his inkstrike in time for a final attack. Petal Splash won, but for Sorrel, his failure was the main concern, and the idea of a fan was, thus, completely foreign to him.
–Come on, don’t you notice she’s always here on the plaza when we have matches? – Daisy kept insisting, nudging the boy a bit. Sorrel was not fond of this kind of teasing.
–So?! She could be a fan of Jonquil, or even Cosmo… –
Daisy looked at the boy somewhat seriously for an instant, before returning to her usual cheerful self.
–If that was the case, she’d be on the row to take selfies with them like the others– she pointed to the multitude of girls following the captain of Petal Splash, Jonquil. That was a common sight, so his teammates didn’t pay much attention to it at this point.
But Daisy’s finger moved away from Jonquil’s personal entourage, pointing towards a single girl standing away from the rest, not even minding the captain’s presence.
–You mean her? Well, I kind of know her, she’s Vadelma’s little sister… K-Kirsikka, right?–
–Ohh, so you do know her name!–
–Yes, I… I heard it from Vadelma; they both work at Café Cardamari, don’t they? Besides, she sometimes sits with me when I need to vent… She doesn’t talk much, but it’s nice having someone listen to me without teasing me every five words– he sneered at her.
–Sounds like you’ve got a lady friend of sorts, you stud! – Daisy winked at Sorrel, nudging him some more.
[BGM: Koi gokoro]
–Stop that! Besides, I’ve seen her talking a lot with you and Tanrine... why do you insist she’s MY fan?–
–Well… – Daisy closed in on Sorrel’s ear –let me tell you a little secret: the only thing she talks about is you– Sorrel seemed surprised, but then his expression changed to one of anger.
–Now you’re pulling my tentacle, Daisy!! It’s not funny to joke with THAT kind of stuff, you know!!– The boy was breathing heavily, and his eyes were getting teary, which got his friend worried.
–C-calm down, Sorrel! Don’t get upset, take a deep breath– he does as told, breathing slowly and deeply, closing his eyes, and pursing his lips with each exhalation. –Better? – She said, placing an arm over his shoulders.
–A little… but it’s still not funny…– he wasn’t enraged anymore, but his eyes spoke of sadness, of a not so far memory that still stung on his heart.
–I’m glad… because it’s not a joke; it’s the truth–
–W-what?–
–I said it’s not a joke, I wasn’t joking… you know I wouldn’t tease you with something like that, especially not after… her…– Daisy looked Sorrel straight in the eye, her face was stern, showing him she was telling the truth.
–Then she… Vadelma’s sister… she speaks about me?–
–Speak? We could write entire volumes with everything she says about you… She’s never admitted it in my face, but I think she really likes you–
Daisy was, obviously, lying about Kirsikka never admitting it, as this was all part of a scheme she and Tanrine came up with to help their blue friend finally confess her feelings to Sorrel. It’s not below her to lie or leak crucial information when one of her ships depends on it.
[Flashback]
[BGM: Sawayakana Asa]
–Really?! You’re finally gonna tell him?!– Tanrine was so excited she could barely stay still.
–Yes… I’ve made up my mind… I’m afraid he might reject me, but I need to tell him… if Marian-san was brave enough to confess to my sister, I can do it, too!– Kirsikka had recently helped the captain of Splat Jam to express her feelings to her sister, Vadelma, and everything went great.
–That’s fantastic! Daisy and I have been hoping for that ship to sail for soooo long!!– Tanrine made a daydream face at the prospect of one of her ships to come true before her very eyes.
–So… got any plans?–
Kirsikka nodded confidently. She’d been reading her manga collection more avidly than ever before; taking all the hints and tips she could to come up with a perfect confession plan for herself, but then, a fatal flaw in her plan became evident.
–Oh, no! I screwed up!!–
–What? What is it? – Daisy questioned.
–I was so concentrated on what I saw on the manga that I forgot that Sorrel-kun doesn’t have a locker for me to leave the letter in! Now how am I going to make sure he reads it? – Tanrine observed her friend’s despair with confusion.
–Uh… Why don’t you give it to him yourself, then?–
–What?! No! I couldn’t!! It’s hard as it is for me to gather the courage to face him AFTER he’s read the letter, I’d be too nervous to just come up to him and hand him the letter out of nowhere!–
–Then… let me and Tanrine prepare the ground for you– Daisy intervened, grinning and winking at the eyepatch-wearing girl.
–Are you sure?–
–Yeah! You just make sure you write that letter, and to look your best, we’ll take care of everything else!–
–Thank you, Daisy-san, Tannie-chan! I really wouldn’t even consider doing it if it weren’t for both of you… –
–Aw, don’t even mention it! We shippers must stick together! – Tanrine answered back while bringing the other two girls into a group hug.
[End of flashback]
This “plan”, however, was beautiful in its simplicity: there was simply no plan, she’d just honestly and directly make Sorrel aware that someone admired him, have Tanrine make sure that Kirsikka would deliver the letter, and then let the Lappi girl do the rest. She knew both of them for a while now, and knew they only needed a little push for them to be inseparable. She has a keen eye for ships, after all.
–She… likes me? No, it’s likely all in your mind… you and your “ships”…–
–Sorrel, when I ship around, I do it mostly for entertainment… – this wasn’t entirely false –but if I tell you I can see in Kirsikka Lappi’s eye something more than just a simple friendship when we mention your name, it’s because it’s clear as day!–
Daisy’s seriousness and sincerity made Sorrel think more deeply about it, and a memory came to him… something he hadn’t thought about in a while… taking a long look to his left hand…
[Flashback]
Sorrel couldn’t believe it; he just had the best Turf War match of his life so far! Not only did Petal Splash win by a wide margin, he was the MVP of his team!! He was sort of dazed, all of his teammates had congratulated him and he felt like walking on clouds for a moment. Then a soft pull on his left hand brought him back to Earth.
–Congratulations!! You were amazing back there, Sorrel-kun!!– Kirsikka was just as ecstatic about Sorrel’s performance and couldn’t help herself, just went up to him and held his hand between hers.
–Huh? T-thank you– the green boy was not entirely sure what was happening, but he felt something warm inside, like returning to the cloud he was on top of a moment ago, and, for one instant, those two kids were alone in the entire world.
It was just an instant, though, and then realization came knocking on Kirsikka’s door, making her face of pure bliss and happiness turn into one of sheer embarrassment and terror.
–Oh my goodness! WHAT AM I DOING?! S-s-sorry!! – And just like she appeared, she dashed away so fast Sorrel wasn’t able to properly understand what just happened.
[End of flashback]
[BGM: Setsunai Kimochi]
Not long after that, Sorrel had started talking to Kirsikka whenever he stopped by the café to relax or cool down after being upset at something. He didn’t ever bring the incident up, part of him just thought he dreamed it, and the other part thought it would be awkward to bring up and that she didn’t think much of it, anyway.
–You really mean it, Daisy? – He whispered. Daisy nodded with a smile on her face.
Now, however, Sorrel was starting to realize that a) it certainly wasn’t a dream; and b) she DID think much of it. For a few moments, he felt that warmth in his hand, like trying to relive the moment; trying so hard to make sense of all the new information he had been given.
-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-
Meanwhile, not far from Inkopolis Tower, Kirsikka was debating herself between giving up or pushing through her fears and anxieties. It was a good thing Tanrine was with her at the time, since giving up was starting to take the lead on this debate.
–I’m not so sure about this anymore!!– The blue girl was blushing madly, holding in her hands a small, pink envelope sealed with a heart, which had “For Sorrel Livarot” written on the back.
–Calm down, Kirsy, you’ll do great! – Tanrine tried to cheer up her friend, while pushing her, to make sure she wouldn’t run away.
–B-but!! One thing is leaving the letter inside a locker; delivering it in person it’s completely different!! I couldn’t even look at him in the eye!–
–Relax; I got your back, don’t I? Look, there he is, talking with Daisy right now!–
–W-w-what?! – It seemed impossible her cheeks could get any more saturated with ink, yet it happened.
–Come on! You’ve made it this far, I believe you can do it! Besides, Daisy and I won’t be far away; just do your best! – With a few final pushes, they were in front of the tower, and a few feet away from the other two inklings involved. With a wave of Tanrine’s hand, Daisy had her cue to step away.
–Well, look at that, she’s here to see you, after all– and, just like that, both cousins casually walked away from them, immediately changing to squid form in order to stay close while remaining hidden.
–H-hello… – said the eye-patched girl, facing the floor to hide her blush under her hat.
–H-hi… K-Kirsikka– the boy was just as eloquent in his speech.
~He remembered my name! ~ Her heart skipped a beat with just that acknowledgement of her existence.
–I… uhm… how are you?–
–Fine… I just… wanted to give you this… if you’ll take it, that is– with that, she bowed in front of him, extending her hands with the envelope towards him, just like in all of her anime and manga. She had her eyes shut, just trying to keep her composure.
[BGM: Hoshi no Kirameki]
Meanwhile, two excited squids were listening to everything, holding tentacles and almost jumping in place.
–Is it… for me? – Even after everything Daisy told him, it was hard to believe this was actually happening.
–Yes… you don’t have to take it of you don’t want to… – she was already bracing herself for rejection, but her thoughts and tears were interrupted that instant.
–N-no! I’ll g-gladly a-accept it! – He stammered, carefully taking the letter from Kirsikka’s hands –It’s not every day that someone actually takes the time to write to me… – he looked at the envelope sentimentally, while she slowly raised her head to face him.
He then started opening the envelope very gently, slow and patient, almost lovingly; Sorrel even made sure to keep intact the little paper heart that kept it sealed. He could feel a faint aroma of flowers coming from inside the envelope, a very subtle scent of… cherry blossom? But before he’s done taking the letter out of the envelope, the girl’s nerves decide to kick in full force.
–I… I… I GOTTA GO!! S-s-sorry, Sorrel-kun!!!–
–Wait, I… – It’s already too late when he can react, she’s already gone. Tanrine comes out of nowhere, running after Kirsikka, while Daisy approaches Sorrel. –W-What the heck was that all about?! DAISY!! – He screams as he somehow feels the presence behind him, turning around and demanding explanations.
–Y-yeah? – Daisy was startled by the boy’s reaction and was afraid something went wrong.
–I… what’s this all about?! – Sorrel demanded, waving the letter in front of the Valencay girl.
–Well, if you really want to know, the answer is right there, you silly squid– she answered, grinning.
Sorrel eyed the letter on his hand and unfolded it.
“Dear Sorrel-kun:
I’ve been meaning to tell you something important for a while now…
Something very special to me, and I want to meet you and tell you in person…
I want us to meet tomorrow at the garden near Inkopolis train station, at 10 am.
I really hope you’ll be there.
Kirsikka”
He stood there for a long moment, reading, and re-reading the letter, making sure he understood what the shy girl wanted to ask of him.
–I don’t get it… what’s she trying to tell me? Isn’t she gonna tell me she’s a fan or something like that? And if so; why not telling me right here a moment ago?? And what’s that “Sorrel-kun” stuff about?! – He clearly was more than dense with matters of the heart. Fortunately, he wasn’t going to face this situation without some guidance.
–Sorrel, Sorrel, Sorrel… – Daisy patted his shoulder –You and I have some reading pending... and we need to get you something to wear tomorrow, heh, heh… – She had a very mischievous smile plastered on her face, prompting a shudder from Livarot.
–Daisy… What the devilfish are you plotting on that head of yours?–
–Oh, you’ll see. But first, we ought to stop by my house to pick up what you need to read, then we’ll go to Arowana Mall and fit you some threads to impress sweet little Kirsikka tomorrow morning– Daisy declared, pulling him by the arm as they went towards the station. As confused as he was, Sorrel barely showed any resistance to the current events, but still feared what the older girl had planned for him to do.
-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-
[BGM: Kanashii na]
–Kirsikka!! Wait!! – As energetic as Tanrine was, she just couldn’t catch her panicking friend.
–I can’t do it, Tannie-chan!! I WON’T GO!! He most likely won’t go either, and even if he does go, I don’t want to face him!!–
–But… why?!–
–What if he rejects me?? I’d rather live with the doubt, I don’t wanna risk being rejected by him… –Kirsikka finally stopped running, leaning on a wall, while she started sobbing softly. That gave Tanrine the chance to catch up and put a hand on her shoulder.
–Kirsy… Trust me, everything will be alright, I know Sorrel! He’s not gonna be rude or laugh at your feelings! Do you think we would’ve helped you all this time to get closer to him if we didn’t have the certainty it can work?–
–If only… I had the courage to try…–
–YOU DO!! You already went and handed him the letter, even when you thought you couldn’t. Daisy is with him right now, rest assured he’ll be there! – Tanrine confidently stated.
–D-do you think Daisy-san will convince him? – Questioned the taller girl, wiping her good eye of tears.
–I don’t think it’ll be necessary, he seemed quite excited about the letter… – Emlett commented, looking back to where they came from. –So… what will you do?–
–… Promise me you’ll stay close… I’m afraid, Tannie-chan – Kirsikka replied, turning to face Tanrine.
–I promise… but you’ve got to look him straight in the eye when you tell him… – the Lappi girl nodded, hugging her friend tightly.
–Thanks again, Tannie-chan–
–It’s nothing, Kirsy; now, let’s go to your place and prepare for tomorrow… it’s gonna be a wonderful day, I’m sure of it!–
With a nod from Kirsikka, both girls ran from that corner towards Café Cardamari.
-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-
Sitting in front of the fitting rooms, Daisy waited Sorrel while reading one of the many books she brought from her home.
–Let’s go over this again… She sees me as her what?! – Came the boy’s voice from inside the cubicle.
–The term is “senpai”, Sorrel, sen-pai – answered Daisy amused.
[BGM: Hontou no Ichiban]
–But why does she see me like that?! What do I have to do with a… senpai?–
–Well, you must’ve done something she considers worthy of admiration, and since she only played in Turf Wars one time, technically you’re her senpai on that field– at that response, he came out of the fitting room outraged.
–YOU’RE OUT OF YOUR MIND!! I’m barely fighting my way to get into B- rank, and I’m the least experienced member of the team! What could anyone possibly admire in me…? – Sorrel said, dejected. But Daisy was having none of that.
–You’re persistent… Being C+ has never stopped you, not even when facing Toxink! And you’ve gotten a lot better since you got into Petal Splash; besides, you’re a great boy, with a great heart… if others can’t see it, it’s their problem; but I see it, Jonquil and Cosmo see it… And it’s clear that, despite having one injured eye, Kirsikka sees it better than we do!–
–You really think that of me? Even when I just keep being the dark cloud over your party?–
–Pfft, we have fun because we’re all together! If you don’t want to joke around, there’s no problem with us, but we want you close all the same, because you’re our friend! If you weren’t there, it wouldn’t be the same– spoke Daisy with a big smile, prompting Sorrel to suddenly hug her.
–Thanks, Daisy… I really needed to hear that… – whispered Sorrel, while shedding a few tears. Daisy hugged back, while shedding a few of her own.
Daisy would never admit it to herself, but this was far beyond the shipping business: it was personal. Her kinship with Sorrel was more akin to being siblings, and she wanted to see him happy, less frustrated. But that doesn’t mean she saw Kirsikka as a means to an end, no; Daisy genuinely felt these two were meant for each other, and considered herself lucky to see this particular ship finally setting sail.
Finally letting go of the hug, wipes her tears, then wipes Sorrel’s, being the big sister she is.
–But enough of sappiness, let’s see how that uniform looks on you– Daisy stepped back a little to properly see Sorrel, who was less than enthusiastic about his new look.
[BGM: Ragtime na Risa]
–Why do I have to wear this uniform? Not that I mind having some new gear, but still… –
–Well, if you’re going to be her senpai, you’ve got to look the part, don’t you? – The boy’s ears dropped with that.
–I’m not sure I like where this is going… I mean, is this what a senpai would wear?–
–Exactly, it’s like the books I showed you… you’re gonna play the whole part for this– Daisy stated cheerfully.
–And, are you sure this will cheer her up?–
–Positively!–
–I hope so; I kinda know how she must be feeling right now… – Sorrel uttered, while giving another glance to his left hand, still holding both the letter and his memories.
–And that’s what makes you a great senpai! – Valencay comforted him, placing a hand on his shoulder –Now, let’s go over the terms you need to learn again– nevertheless, his mind was somewhere else.
~But, how do I feel about her? It wouldn’t be fair to just give her false hopes… I mean, I want to cheer her up, but where do I go after that? ~
–Hey? Earth to Sorrel? – Daisy waved her hand in front of him, interrupting his thoughts.
–Oh, sorry, I… I kind of got distracted for a moment–
–OK, let’s just pay for the uniform and make a quick review, you need to be well rested tomorrow–
–Alright, Daisy, let’s go then– he replied, giving a quick glance at the letter in his hand. ~I guess… I’ll think about it at home… ~
-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-
[BGM: Maritime Memory]
At Café Cardamari, two girls were relaxing, reading some manga.
–Uh, Tannie-chan, shouldn’t we be planning anything for tomorrow?–
–Well, to be honest, it’s Daisy who makes plans… besides, I think the best thing you can do right now is cool down and tomorrow just be there and speak from the bottom of your heart– Kirsikka didn’t seem very convinced.
–I don’t know… what if I make myself look like a fool in front of him? – She then felt a warm hand on her shoulder.
–Then you should take deep breathes before talking to him… – It was Vadelma, who then sat next to her little sister. –You helped Marian and me not long ago and now, here’s my bit of advice to you, as your big sister: do what your heart tells you to, be yourself, and if he’s the right one, he’ll be head over heels about you in no time– she solemnly declared with a smile, hugging her sibling, who returned the hug immediately.
–Arigatou, onee-chan! I’ll do my best!–
–I’m sure you will– Vadelma replied.
–Aw, you guys! I can never help myself when I see such cute moments!! – Tanrine rose from her seat to go hug the Lappi sisters and make that tender moment even tenderer.
–Now, you girls keep reading, I’ll bring you something to drink. And how about we watch a movie later?–
–Sounds great, onee-chan! Thank you! – After the elder Lappi sister left for the kitchen, the younger one turned to her friend. –By the way, Tannie-chan, I want to learn more about the stats of the weapons– Tanrine was taken aback by this, not expecting such a subject rising in the conversation.
–S-sure, but, why?–
–I want to understand him better, and I want to at least be able to play with him sometimes, especially on Splatfests… I heard it’s not as aggressive on those–
–Well… it depends on who you go against, but let’s do it! I’ll teach you everything Logan has taught me! – The girl with braces seemed confident in her knowledge, and was met with a smug smirk from her eye-patched friend.
–Has he? You and him seem to be rather close, aren’t you? Haven’t you considered…?–
–Oh, no… you don’t mean…? Do you think he sees me like that?!–
–Daisy-san has told me she ships you two, she must know something– Tanrine gasped loudly at that last bit of information, slightly flustered.
–SHE DID NOT TELL YOU THAT! Really?! Logan and I? I mean, he’s cute and all, but… he was rather distant at first–
–Well, Marian-san used to be very strict about befriending a rival team’s member…–
–Yeah, Clem told me about it… but, still… do you really think he… does like me?–
–Hmm, then why don’t you try this next time you spend time with him learning about weapons? Pay attention to his reaction and we’ll discuss the results over a soda when my shift’s over– Kirsikka proposed, pointing to a particular page in the manga she was reading. Tanrine studied the scenario depicted on the book, blushing a little harder .
–You sure I should try this? I’m not sure I can make it seem natural, besides… I want to meditate on what I feel about him before making any assumptions on his feelings…–
–Oh, Tannie-chan… I know that look; he means a lot to you, doesn’t he? – In her mind, Kirsikka was surprised how easily had the tables turned, but given the time they and Daisy spent together talking about matchmaking, this was not a rare occurrence.
–… Yes… I mean… he’s been so nice to me; ever since he fixed my inkbrush, we got closer and closer… now I want to know what he really feels, but first I have to be completely certain of what I feel–
–That’s the wisest choice, Tannie-chan… – Lappi said with a knowing smile. –That’s what I did before finally making up my mind about confessing to Sorrel-kun… –
–Then that means you’re now sure you can do it?! – Tanrine asked with stars in her eyes.
–Yes, after what you and my sister said, I think I’m ready to do it; so let’s just take it easy right now, and tomorrow morning I’m counting on you to watch my back so I won’t forfeit–
–You can count on it! – The Emlett girl said reassuringly. Both girls shared some excited giggles before going back to their respective books.
-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-<3-
[BGM: Theme of LoveCon]
Inkopolis train station. It was a rather warm morning; the advent of spring was more obvious than ever, as the trees on the nearby garden could testify: the cherry trees were already preparing to bloom. The fair skies and beautiful scenery made for a perfect stage for the events about to unfold…
–Calm down, Kirsy, he’ll come– Tanrine Emlett was doing her best to keep her friend and fellow shipper relaxed. Kirsikka seemed okay by the time they left Café Cardamari, even quite confident; but, by the time they arrived at the garden, anxiety again reared its ugly head upon the girl’s psyche.
–What if he doesn’t?? What if he thinks I’m a weirdo or something?? Tannie-chan, I’m feeling bad, I’m not so sure about this anymore… – as the clock neared the fated hour, she felt more and more uneasy, as if in any moment, a flock of butterflies would burst flying out of her.
–Take deep breaths, remember what Vadelma said–
–O-okay… – the brace-beaked girl kept track of the hour on her squidphone while her friend regained composure. Five more minutes to keep the taller girl from panicking until the other party appeared; doable, but still rather challenging.
–Now, that’s better – Tanrine commented, while noticing some figures approaching the station. –And right on time, too; there comes Sorrel and Daisy, and… wow… –
–Huh? What do you mean by…? Ohhh… oh my heavens… – Kirsikka clasped her hands together in front of her mouth at the sight of Sorrel: he was wearing the full school uniform gear, save for the squid hairclip, instead opting for some fake contacts.
–Wow, really elegant… don’t you think, Kirsy? – Tanrine elbowed the other girl playfully, then turning to find out she was completely frozen in place. Kirsikka’s face was completely flushed as ink rushed through her veins all the way to her ears. –Uh… Kirsy? –
–I… I… – Kirsikka was in full “blue screen” mode; completely unable to react. Then her friend did the only logical thing to get her out of it.
–This is your chance, Kirsikka!! Go get him!! – She said while pushing her from behind.
–W-WHAAAAT?! – Her sudden outburst caught the attention of the other two inklings moving towards them. Sorrel turned towards the blushing girl, blushing a little himself, as well. Daisy and Tanrine again shifted to the sidelines to give the other two some deserved space.
[BGM: Hontou no Omoi]
–K-Kirsikka-chan, is that you? –Now the Lappi girl was completely shocked, she couldn’t even blink as the boy she’s been crushing on for the last few months approached her. –I w-wanted to thank you for the letter... I… it made me feel special that you’ve been thinking of me this way, I mean… Daisy told me a little about it, and, to be honest, nobody has ever thought of me like that before… but, I also couldn’t help but to think about all the times you’ve tried to cheer me up, and I didn’t notice you… and I want to apologize for it – with that, he bowed in front of her, as formal as he could.
–I… you… – finally the girl seems to be snapping out of her dazed state, muttering a few words before speaking up. –T-there’s no need for you to apologize!! Seeing you smile is all the reward I need – she half-lied.
–But, I also realized that it wouldn’t be the same without you and the muffins you give me… I want to actually get to know you better… – Sorrel expressed while standing upright again.
–Ehhh?! –The girl just couldn’t believe her ears; she was entranced by the situation, and her eye was almost about to jump out of its socket when she saw Sorrel draw a rose out of his blazer.
–I don’t know… I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do in this moment… – once he got out everything he had in his chest, the boy was just as lost as the girl in front of him; at a loss for words, and for actions. Kirsikka, for her part, turned her head back to see Tanrine and Daisy giving her the thumbs up for her to finally proceed with her confession.
–S-Sorrel-kun… I also want to get to know you better… but, what I’ve already gotten to know about you… well, I… I like it a lot… –
–W-what d-d-did you j-just s-say??! – All of a sudden, the girl had gathered the courage to look at him in the eye, even if she still was unbelievably blushing herself.
–Sorrel Livarot… I… I… I’VE FALLEN IN LOVE WITH YOU!! –
–Me?! But why me?! –
–Because I’ve seen how hard you try, I’ve seen your highest and lowest points… even if it has been hard, you’ve pulled through the league with your team, and they count on you, Daisy-san told me!– Sorrel looked at her incredulous.
–Daisy… she told you that? – Suddenly Kirsikka felt braver than ever, and she couldn’t stop.
–Yes, and you know what? That made me like you even more than before! And that day… I’ll never forget the day you arrived at the café with Daisy… you looked so sad…–
–Cyanthia… – he whispered, remembering one of the darkest days of his young life.
–But you got up from that! And you kept moving forward despite everything! That’s why I think you’re a really, really fresh boy and… because of that… I fell for you…– Something inside Sorrel was itching, sparking… Something in his soul ignited that instant, watching at this girl go all out with her feelings, just like he once did.
[BGM: Nukumori no Kioku]
–Wow… you really think I’m that… fresh? –
–Yes! You’ve managed to rise above your weaknesses and have become a key member for your team! That’s why… I never got any hopes that you’d notice me… – now the resolution shown by Kirsikka was fading out in light of how she saw herself.
–Why? What’s wrong? –
–Nothing! I mean… I’m not especially talented, or pretty… if it wasn’t for Tannie-chan or Daisy-san… I wouldn’t have dared to tell you all of this… –
–What do you mean? – He walked one step closer to her, unsure of how to react.
–You’re this incredible boy, and by your own merits… I barely work as a waitress, I have this eyepatch and I’m sure you see prettier girls every day… it was hard for me all this time to gather the guts to see you face to face and tell you my feelings… – Sorrel looked at her, he saw how hard she was fighting the urge to burst into tears and tried to say something, anything, to prevent that.
–Wait a moment… answer me this…–
–Y-yes…? – The Livarot boy swallowed hard.
–D-did… did you bake those muffins you invite me sometimes when I’m feeling down? – The expression on Kirsikka’s face turned into one of surprise, and she looked away while thinking of the answer.
–W-well, yes… I mean, at first I just took one that was already fresh from the oven… but then I asked my sister to teach me how to bake them… so that I could have always one ready… – she told while wiping her tears off.
–You baked them… for me? – Sorrel further questioned, while blushing harder; Kirsikka’s only response as a slow nod. –Those muffins are my favorites from Café Cardamari… they’re delicious!–
–Really? You think so? –
–Yeah! I love’em!! Do you bake them for me? –
–Y-yes… –
–Then you’ve got talent for that! – It was clear he was trying to cheer her up, but it was also clear in his excited expression that he really meant all that he said. Still, Kirsikka’s look remained gloom, glancing downwards again.
–But, yet… I don’t really stand out; I’m not sophisticated, or pretty… – her words were interrupted with the same rose she saw Sorrel withdraw from his pocket a moment ago. She looked up to meet Livarot’s flushing face while he spoke at her.
–D-don’t say that… – as much as he tried to avoid her eye, he knew he didn’t look very convincing while looking away, shutting his eyes forcefully while taking one more step closer to the girl. –Y-y-you’re not ugly, OK?! –
Kirsikka took the rose in her hand, looking at it and then back to Sorrel: he was so flustered, but the earnestness of his words could not be denied.

–You really think so? – She was met suddenly with Sorrel’s eyes; that flame in his eyes, that determination, wasn’t that what made her fall in love with him in the first place?
–Y-yes! I really think so! – With that, Kirsikka was feeling pure bliss in her soul, smiling weakly while tears ran through her cheeks, and taking Sorrel aback. –D-don’t cry…!! – Without a second thought, he reaches with his hand to clean the tears from the girl’s face. The sudden contact made Kirsikka take an even bolder chance, tugging at the flaps of his blazer to bring him closer to her, and resting her head on the confused boy’s shoulder.
Daisy and Tanrine couldn’t even blink right now, and watch intently the scene unfolding before them, while holding each other excitedly.
–A-are you OK? – Doubtful of how to proceed, but worried nonetheless, Sorrel places his hands upon Kirsikka’s shoulders, feeling how his shoulder is now being covered in tears and hearing the girl’s sobbing.
–Yes… *sniff*… just… give me a moment… – Then, feeling how the boy’s grip tightened on her, she let her whole heart explode out of mixed emotions, crying profusely, and sobbing deeply. Without saying a word, Sorrel also shed a few tears of his own, knowing all too well the strain on her heart from his own experience.
After a couple of minutes letting it all out, Kirsikka felt more at ease, but suddenly her body tensed at the realization that she had just been crying on Sorrel’s shoulder!! Yet, instead of stepping away, she let go of the blazer to properly hug the boy of her dreams, sending all nervousness to heck; she had gotten this far, anyway, didn’t she?
As for Sorrel, feeling the sudden hug from this girl he just found out had these deep feelings for him made his face glow green with a deep blush; but still, he didn’t do a thing to stop her.
–H-how about if, this time, the muffins are on me? Would you like that? – Sorrel proposed, to which, Kirsikka could only answer with a nod on his shoulder and tightening the embrace.

It’s been a few days and the cherry trees have blossomed, adorning the area surrounding Inkopolis train station with pink flowers. From the station emerged Team Petal Splash, coming from their practice to enjoy some leisure time.
–Great job today, guys, irado! Especially you, Sorrel, you’re on fire lately, mermão! –
–Thanks, Jonquil! –
–Yeah, dude! You’ve been in the zone these days! –
–You really think so, Cosmo? I’ve just felt… dunno, more at ease with myself… –
–I’d say it helps having some… incentives… –
–Don’t you start, Daisy!! – exclaimed Sorrel, while glaring his friend and big sister figure.
–Well, guys, I’ll catch ya later, my babe’s here for me– spoke Cosmo, sprinting towards his boyfriend, Taloupe, and walking away holding hands.
–Bele, Cara! See ya tomorrow! – The captain waved at his friend. At the same time, Daisy got ahold of his waist with a lustful gleam in her eyes.
–And what about you, captain Stud, got any plans? –
–Always available for you, menina– with that, they walked away from Sorrel, holding each other’s waist and Daisy resting her head on Jonquil’s shoulder. The hat-wearing boy stared at them befuddled, but disregards them to notice a certain someone walking his direction.

–I overheard you did really well today, Sorrel-kun– Kirsikka was smiling widely, yet she couldn’t help but to blush around the boy.
–T-thanks– Sorrel replied, lowering his hat to hide his own blushing face.
–You seemed deep in thought for a moment, is something wrong? – The boy took on a more stoic expression before glancing towards the captain and Daisy.
–It’s those two… I’m never sure if they’re actually a couple, or if they just like to mess around together…–
–Well, Tannie-chan and I have a few hypotheses about it… – remarked the Lappi girl, with a certain shine in her eye, denoting her shipping intent.
–I… I bet you do… – Sorrel laughed nervously, remembering the girl’s hobby of matchmaking –uh, so… how about if we go to Arowana Mall to talk, just the two of us? – Offered him, trying his best not to blush more.
–Ha-hai! –Kirsikka happily answered, while walking by his side. Taking a look on the boy’s profile, she gathered some courage to ask a bold question: –Y-you know, Sorrel-kun… a Splatfest is coming soon… –
–Yeah..? –
–So… I was wondering… would it be okay with you if I joined in to play a few matches that day? –
–You… want to play turf wars… with me? –
–Yes, I… I’ve been practicing with Tannie-chan lately; and… well, I think… as long as it isn’t a very heated battle, we could have some fun… t-together… if you want to, I mean–
–I’d love to! I’m only a little worried about you… y’know, your eye, the transforming…–
–Don’t worry, I’ll make sure to stay safe and… besides, I’ve gotten better with the transformation, so I’d like play at least a couple of matches… –
–Well, if you’re so sure about it, let’s do it! Let’s hurry to Arowana so we decide which team we’ll be in! – said Sorrel, excited at the prospect of playing alongside Kirsikka for the first time.
–O-okay! – And so, they resumed their stroll, staying really close without touching. The teens were still too shy to hold hands in public, but they were OK with it; as long as they could talk for as long as they wanted, everything was alright.
Everything was just alright with the world.
THE END.
I hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for reading.
