Dong Yugan uses brick to form sculptural surfaces and playful structures at Red Brick Art Museum
This museum in Beijing takes its name from the red brick used by architect Dong Yugan to create spaces that are dramatically illuminated by skylights, perforations and narrow windows incorporated into its homogenous masonry surfaces. Red Brick Art Museum is a folk-based, non-profit art museum showcasing Chinese and world art, which was founded by collectors Yan Shijie and Cao Mei, and opened in 2014. The museum is located in the Chinese capital’s Chaoyang district, northeast of the city centre. It covers a total area of 20,000 square metres, with almost 10,000 square metres of exhibition space.

Get Outta Town: The Overlook Mountain House Ruins
Ahh, do you feel that in the air? That crisp pumpkin spiced breeze wrapped in a butternut squash colored cable knit sweater? It feels a lot like a fall in New York State! Well, okay, not right now because today in New York City it feels like being inside of a hot homeless fart cloud.
Fart cloud or not, fall means weekend vacations from the City for some Catskill Mountain hiking (mostly eating) with my partner and step-dog. Three years ago, we explored Bard College, two years ago, we slept in a yurt on a farm with no locks (but plenty of coyotes in the woods that can probably use doorknobs and love to eat amateur historians). This year, we took in the clean air in a two room cabin owned by a former Playboy writer who had more books about lesbian sex and LSD than I knew existed.
Unsurprisingly, the guy who dropped in but never quite got out lived close to Woodstock, which is overlooked by Overlook Mountain. After a curvy drive (wherein the dog barfed in the car when we were about 20 yards away from the parking lot), we reached the trail head that leads to the top of Overlook Mountain, which is across the street from a Tibetan monastery, whose parking lot was closed for a private event. Namaste my ass.
After parking and cleaning up the dog barf, we started up the trail. I’m not much of a hiker, as evidenced by the fact that I call it ‘woods walking,’ but one way my partner knows to get me into nature is to promise me some history along the way. In this case, ‘the way’ was a two and a half mile uphill hike at an 89 degree angle. Lucky for me, Overlook Mountain is the site of a ghost hotel!
