Launching a new business should't feel like having sex for the first time should it?
I’m sitting here in a coffee shop in Sydney just after my ‘rejection meeting’ with Screen NSW - meanwhile I’m getting “where the fuck are u?” messages from all my friends in Cannes …. A very difficult moment . I’m feeling sad and like I’m missing out on the world - its passing me by man
A friend of mine ‘Garnet’ is doing a “Crashing Cannes” TV show in Cannes right now . He’s the only guy who had ever been banned from Screen Australia’s annual Cannes party … He’s the perfect guy for the job … I’m imagining what he’s doing right now … I wish I was there with him … I reckon I’m the 2nd most appropriate guy for that job !!!
Screen NSW were nice ppl but v unsure about transmedia - the idea of adding a narrative to a virtual world is just not sinking in … It was just toooo risky for them to swallow .. Dudes it’s actually pretty simple and way easier than you think .., the plan is done … I just need to able to have a go at it .. I’m a Director and a Cross Platform Prroducer & no one else is ! Please someone get inside my head before its too late … The world is spinning away like a top - catch it with me and come on the lucrative ride that it will be …

Forget Your Vision (that you got investment for) and Go with the Investors Vision.
I gotta remember that The Dream Channel was designed specifically to be ‘transmedia’ (multi platform drama) concept . THE PROBLEM with every project is that your investors will only ever see the project as something different to you - in this case they see Dream Channel as a platform only … Yes it is platform but it’s been designed from day one as a ‘city’ in the future where a narrative story is progressing … This is just what it is and what it has to start out as (im afraid) . From there Im going to let the audience tell me where it’s going to go. If the ‘platform’ can be used in other ways (which I believe it has great potential to do so) then great - but you gotta start at the start that you know.
One of the hardest things in a social media project with investors is to keep the vision in tact. It’s funny how your vision can get compromised so easily - in my experience Investors tend to always want to do this. Of course they only want it to be a success, and you do want to take on board their comments, but you gotta remember that they’re not in your head and can’t see what you can see AND they’re backing you because you’ve got something they don’t have and can’t do. A good investor knows that he ‘knows’ jack shit about what you actually do and that this is a good thing!!. As you progress and they get to know how CRAZY both you and the project really are (another plus), this can often be too easy for everyone to forget. If you cave in before you go live then the entire project is doomed before it even starts - I have to remember that it’s my responsibility to my investors to show them the X factor (the bit that they simply don’t know / reason why they invested/. the bit they don’t like talking about) ..
Here’s something interesting though - the main problem has actually been this - Dream Channel has at it’s core a narrative story (yeah I’ve said that but now Im saying it again) which is great .. but what’s not great is that my investors come from the film / narrative story world . So you can guess exactly what part of Dream Channel they chose to fight me on … The bit they truly understand (narrative) was the bit that they couldn’t see being integrated into a multi platform concept. The news flash is that ‘narrative’ in an interactive world is not the old school traditional ‘narrative’ where the story teller signs it off with everyone before you start in the form of a script etc . In fact it’s very much the opposite - interactive narrative is generated by the audience through social media channels, and cannot be integrated into the story world on-line unless there is a tech structure created specifically to give you the flexibility to do so … So this is what the IP in Dream Channel actually is … It’s how this happens and what has been created to allow the two things to gel ..
I think that with any social media start up the founder will find himself fight with the investors only on the things that they understand - another lesson that I’ve learned.
.. Let’s see what happens in the coming weeks when the original vision (the one that the NSW Govt gave me the grant to create + what was invested in) goes live ;) … It;s the X factor that I have a responsibility to deliver (the bit that will make my investors rich)

The film industry sux sometimes - after the music industry it’s gotta be the next one to get disrupted by technology ‘. Every day I deal with old media thinkers who still run the show - and what makes matters worse they preach to you about tech projects
I’ve learned to suck it up as there really is no point in arguing the point. - let’s face it - no one likes it when outsiders come onto their turf and start changing things
The most interesting thing though is the paradigm shift in thinking that’s required for film to go the way of music & more so that this thinking needs to be done by FILM people not techies … Tech solved musics distribution problem … It’s not going to have the same impact on film - the tech change is not buried in distribution - it’s in immersion !!!
When u don’t know how ignorant u are you are really dangerous .

I’ve been filming a documentary about the global EDM scene for the last 10 years - The journey has taken me to many of the worlds more electronic music underground scenes. From dodgy minimal morning beats at The Egg in North London in 2004 , the craziness of Hard House Academy in Brixton in 2005, the crazy world of Amnesia Ibiza in 2005 (I was there for whole season and this was the only place I shot!!) , Love Parade in 2006, the early days of Spice at the Bourbon right here in Sydney in 2007 .. right through to the current day. The journey has captured some amazing DJ’s, personalities, girlfriends, friends, groupies and so on - but the main thing I’ve tried to do is RE-CAPTURE them again and again making them actual characters inside the story.
The nature of the footage (short clips that are more social media in feel) forced me to create a new medium for delivering the story. The result is Dice City - a purpose built EDM ‘world / city’ where stories like mine can be told in a unique manner that is immersive and interactive. A place where you can recommend / promote the stories that you like - and even add to them! .
Im currently inserting all my stories into the world and when it’s done it will be a very new form of interactive documentary - one that I hope everyone can add to as it progresses (too hard to do it all on my own now - especially with so much going on) .
DICE CITY - it’s coming ;)
I had a meeting last Friday afternoon with a guy who used to work for Accenture as consulting to new media and technology businesses in the broadcast sector. I pitched him my vision. He responded by saying this
"right here right now when you talk to me face to face I can see the value proposition and I think it’s brilliant - but if I challenged you to write it down and send it to someone they would have no idea WTF you are talking about!"
The truth is that when I try to explain what Im doing to anyone older than about 35 they they’re always about five seconds away from calling security.
I must be onto something!
My girlfriend has resorted to catching our dinner .. but look at what she gets to wear - there are always upsides to surviving on social media salary.

My business is actually a different ‘business’ all together to what I thought it was - i just don't know what until others tell me.
In war Generals always sat “No plan survives the first shot”. Social media is the same - so best to get excited about it and start getting your investors used to it;)
The best possible way for any social media app / start up to ‘start’ is to expect the unexpected BUT the hardest thing is convincing your investors of this. Of course people want to invest in a concept that they believe in ./ understand. The problem is that you need to make them understand the need for constant iterations AND for the fact that what you are building might end up being used in an entirely unexpected way. You need to prepare them for this ride in to the unknown. They need to know that your vision will change and that each time it does they have not invested in a crazy man MORE SO with each iteration they concept has become more valuable. Just make sure you actually release something to the public at large B4 they remove you from the project entirely (what happened to me on one of my ill fated projects) ... and know that this is a reality
(so make sure you work out a way that the project can be re-started when they finally bring you back to it - because the guys they replace you with have go buckleys of continuing with your vision ... often an expensive learning curve for all involved !
The mistake I made with Dallus (dallus.tumblr.com) - well one of them anyway - was that I didn’t give the audience a chance to play with the site and in doing so create the ability for them to take it in a direction that id never thought of.
I had huge pressures from stake holders who were dead set that I had to have a concrete plan. In hindsight should have dug in and stuck to what I knew 2 be the case. The problem at that time was that the site was so late in getting delivered that I’d lost all my credibility and confidence with the investors - which is another whole set of problems and the focus of a whole set of blog posts to come - I succumbed even though deep down I knew it to be wrong.
