Riley can’t help but chuckle, immediately putting his arms tightly around Sam and kissing their head. “Alright alright next time I’ll give you a heads up. Should I just yell look out babe or did you have something else in mind?”

Honestly, it’s been a long time since he felt this at ease with someone - he almost forgot what’s it like. At this point he feels like he is just sinking more and more into Sam, wanting to breath in the last bit of their scent if he could. It’s times like this when he feels like time has stopped - in a good way and not in the way it felt timeless and endless when he was captured and alone. “I’m surprised that you didn’t say anything about the cute cows.” He knows Sam doesn’t like cows all that much.

Sam purses their lips, shooting Riley their deadliest glare, though, really, they’re just trying not to laugh. “Whatever,” they say, rolling their eyes. “We both know I can outflirt you anytime, anywhere.”

They can’t help but splutter at Riley’s next words, gently pushing into him with their shoulder. “Well, I was going to, before I was so rudely attacked,” they grumble, wrapping their arms around Riley as well, both to show that he’s joking and also in case Riley decides to retaliate. And maybe, also, because Riley is warm and comfy, and they don’t really want to move away at all. “Right. First of all, cows are in no way cute. They’re actually horrifying. But I guess maybe since aliens are horrifying as well, they’d find the cows cute? Except, y’know, cows are pretty much demons in disguise, so what the hell would the aliens want with them anyway? I mean there’s gotta be something more than them just being cute, if the aliens are gonna tolerate them. Right?”

It’s only been a bit more than two months since everything had changed. Since he had been shot. Since he should have died. Since he came to the 21st century. 

Though everything slowly started to settle it was still difficult for Dave to process everything that had happened. One of Klaus’ siblings - was it Allison? - said something about support groups for veterans. Where they could go and talk about everything that’s haunting them.

Since Klaus explained this whole internet and google thing to him he decided to check if there was one of those groups nearby. There was. 

After thinking about it for another few days he decided to just give it a shot. What could go wrong? He told Klaus he wanted to take a walk to clear his head (that’s not entirely wrong at least) and went there. 

The meeting lasted a bit longer than an hour. There were many people, talking about their time in Afghanistan or Iraq - Dave didn’t even know there were wars there happening - but he stayed quiet, deciding to just listen for now.

After it was over he decided to go up to the guy who had led the group. “Hey, thanks for… doing this.” he gestures towards the room, a rather shy smile on his face.

After a few years of working at the DOV, Sam’s become somewhat of an expert at recognising when people are showing up for the first time. There’s always a certain look on their faces, this insecurity, a question of if they should really be here or not, but also, most of the time, a little bit of relief, like coming home after a long time away. Plus, of course, considering all the time he spends here, if their face doesn’t look familiar, they probably haven’t been here before. 

Therefore, it doesn’t take him very long to notice the new guy. He doesn’t say anything at first, just starts the meeting with a general welcome to everyone, thanks them for coming, starts the meeting like he always does. He’s not that surprised when the new guy stays quiet, it’s not that unusual, but— well, he makes a note to try to catch him after the meeting, at least. The worst thing is when a new face shows up, once, and then never again. He can’t help but wonder about those, sometimes, what’s happened to them, if he could have done something more.

Thankfully, he doesn’t have to try very hard to catch this one, since he comes up to him after the meeting. Sam can’t help but smile back at him, a little relieved. “Of course,” he says, waving off the guy’s thanks. He wants to say it’s his job, but— well, it’s not just that, not for him. 

“You’re new, right? I mean, I haven’t seen you around before,” he says, before offering the guy his hand. “I’m Sam. How about we get some coffee, and I can show you around?” he asked, hoping the guy would accept. He figured coffee would be the best start, get him to stick around, and then hopefully Sam could help him with whatever it was he needed.

aches from old injuries. finicky battle wounds, stiff joints from being restrained in captivity - things that their body never erased, pain that reminds them every day of what they went through. maybe it’s obvious, like a limp, or maybe it’s something that is only clear with early morning stretches and groans. maybe the aches grow worse in rainy weather, or when they think about the injury that caused the soreness.
