all the things we cannot do vs. all the things we can
we cannot /
/ watch the sun set or the moon rise together on the hill down the street - the 400 miles between us would have made that difficult even without the ban on close human interaction
/ let the spring-ache and feelings of loneliness make us cold
/ forget how to breathe, after all, the trees need our expelled carbon dioxide to survive
/hold each other’s hand
but
if I keep my eyes closed long enough, sometimes I can pretend you’re sitting right beside me
/ escape to neptune’s fourth moon
but
we can /
/ tell our future daughter what it would have been like seeing the earth grow smaller and smaller and to have the sun at our backs
/ sleep in on Sunday mornings while grey light touches your hair and the rain outside your window meets the rain from outside my window
almost like
we are crying together
/ listen to the gunshots in the distance and pretend they are fireworks hidden behind the trees
/ stay inside and soak up the sun and air, as if we have become potted house plants
/ confess the last seven years under the not-so-warm glow of the street lights
/ burn all the candles until there’s no light left, reading poetry in the growing darkness
/watch as the sunlight dances on the books every evening at 8:20pm
one day
we’ll make time to read them
/ spill our souls to the stars and wait for answers
but
their response might get lost somewhere between Andromeda and the Milky Way
/ stare at the wall clock that has read a quarter to five since the beginning of May
/ tape ourselves together with the stuff that guy in the lighting department said would fix everything
he obviously wasn’t talking about soft tissue but we’ve tried everything else so there’s nothing to lose
/ dream of escaping to the Arctic
I heard no place is safe these days but at least this time of year the sun would hardly ever leave our side
/ watch the spring rain turn into spring snow as the wild cats take shelter in waterlogged abandoned boxes
&
their green eyes plead for warmth
/ believe that in a garden one golden day in autumn we will meet again under the endless sky / we can /
