man, I miss writing fanfiction, actually
my dream as a fanfic writer is to write a story which people want to talk to me about and send asks about afterwards and discuss things the characters did and the symbolism and meanings behind certain lines and I'll be all "hehe thanks" but irl I'll be in literal tears because I wrote something that means something to someone
star trek tos au where all the uniform boots look like this
this is for everyone who was upset that i didn't match the boots to their uniform colors
it really is unbelievable that gamers aren't the most anticapitalist demographic ever. like imagine if mobile game devs had their needs met and could make actual videogames instead of brainless filler between ads for other games that are also brainless filler between ads. imagine if games didn't need to be shoved out the door a year before they're ready filled with microtransactions because shareholders wanna see a line go up. imagine if studios were owned and run by the people making the games and not business bros who have never touched a videogame. how is this not an automatically won battle
for the love of god, write all the self-indulgent scenes you want. be utterly shameless about including every last fantasy. i know everyone likes to share quotes and quips about how miserably hard writing is, but please please try thinking of it as a joyful act where you get to be a messy human who makes art rather than some pain filled quest for icy perfection.
“authenticity looks an awful lot like self-indulgence but it is the only way to find your true audience”
[ID: tweet by @ SouthernMarxist of a quote by Rigoberta Menchu:
"It is said that our indigenous ancestors, Mayas and Aztecs, made human sacrifices to their gods. It occurs to me to ask: How many humans have been sacrificed to the gods of Capital in the last five hundred years?" End ID.]
I remember once watching a video that mapped out the tallest building in the world over the course of history. Up until about the end of the 19th century, it was all religious sites. Then it switched to banks and office towers.
Seems like there might be some symbolism somewhere in there.
Yay, unsolicited advice time! Or, not really advice, more like miscellaneous tips and tricks, because if there's one thing eight years of martial arts has equipped me to write, it's fight scenes.
.
Fun things to add to a fight scene (hand to hand edition)
It's not uncommon for two people to kick at the same time and smack their shins together, or for one person to block a kick with their shin. This is called a shin lock and it HURTS like a BITCH. You can be limping for the rest of the fight if you do it hard enough.
If your character is mean and short, they can block kicks with the tip of their elbow, which hurts the other guy a lot more and them a lot less
Headbutts are a quick way to give yourself a concussion
If a character has had many concussions, they will be easier to knock out. This is called glass jaw.
Bad places to get hit that aren't the groin: solar plexus, liver, back of the head, side of the thigh (a lot of leg kicks aim for this because if it connects, your opponent will be limping)
Give your character a fighting style. It helps establish their personality and physicality. Are they a grappler? Do they prefer kicks or fighting up close? How well trained are they?
Your scalp bleeds a lot and this can get in your eyes, blinding you
If you get hit in the nose, your eyes water
Adrenaline's a hell of a drug. Most of the time, you're not going to know how badly you've been hurt until after the fact
Even with good technique, it's really easy to break toes and fingers
Blocking hurts, dodging doesn't
.
Just thought these might be useful! If you want a more comprehensive guide or a weapons edition, feel free to ask. If you want, write how your characters fight in the comments!
Have a bitchin day <3
Guys guys guys fighting tips fighting tips
A few other things from my personal experience:
-An elbow to the face can absolutely leave a cut, the blade of your elbow is sharp enough
-If a shorter or lighter person wants more power in a kick, turning out your foot gives you momentum
-In a similar vein, a kick that misses is likely to take you around in a circle which you can either use for an opening for a hit or a quick recovery (by going on the way around and landing in the same position) to show skill or training
-if you kick someone in the liver they pass out
-people with training will often use a dodged kick as setup for momentum for an elbow or punch
-a jab in some styles of martial arts is not mean for power, you jab to the face to make them put their hands up to protect and then cross, hook, or kick to the body
-if your stance is too square you fall on your ass
-untrained or self-taught fighters dont turn their wrists as they punch, but trained ones usually do. Back of your hand should be on top while you punch, but facing out when you just have your hands up to guard
-stuff that breaks limbs usually requires a lever of some kind (basically, hold down both ends and push up in the middle)
-twisting your wrist to break someones grip can be uno reversed into grabbing their wrist

Do you sometimes read a fic writer’s work, and just… thank all the gods this person managed to get obsessed with the same fictional people you did?
they added new wolf variants in the most recent minecraft snapshot
The reoccurring theme of being unwanted in your childhood and seeing yourself as some kind of monster and how you feel like you have to move mountains to get people to like you
and they were neighbors

i care so much about fictional morality and ethics but not in a lame ass "is this character/ship problematic" way. i'm cringe for other reasons.
i want to know what the court proceedings for a trial where the defendant claims mind control or possession look like. what's the worst crime you can commit in a world where people can cast spell of curse your entire bloodline over a careless insult at the farmer's market. how are magical prisoners treated. what kind of values would a society whose honour code is built on glory through battle and warmongering uphold. what's public opinion on the death penalty.
grabs your hand. come worldbuild with me.
Last time I took a deep dive into how the legal system in my story worked I ended up with a spinoff plotline about supervillain insurance fraud
