fair folk lived freely alongside humans. their stories were recorded and retold, passed off as fiction to the unfair (or, non-fair folk). eventually they were all gone, but the magic didn't die with them.
the spirits of the fair folk continued to live through the next generation, and the next, for hundreds of years, seemingly at random. with each new spirit the magic faded a little, but it never left completely. fairy godmothers might not be turning pumpkins into carriages these days, but a little magic goes a long way in their day to day lives.
elderwood is just one of many 'havens' across the world, where fair folk spirits feel drawn to. their magic is at its strongest here, and they know they're living amongst their own kind. the town is a far cry from its historical roots, but the spirits have learnt to adjust. it's 2020, there's bills to be paid, and nobody has time to wait for some prince to sweep them off their feet. to get their happily ever afters, these spirits will have to figure it out for themselves.
