Acute Stress Disorder - Demystifying the DSM-V
Okay, so you’ve already read my post on PTSD here, right? If not, go read it now! http://scriptshrink.tumblr.com/post/154606190310/demystifying-the-dsm-v-ptsd
Acute Stess Disorder is basically PTSD-lite. Much of the criteria are the same – I’ve bolded the big changes. The important thing is that there aren’t as many symptoms listed, and it has a much shorter duration.
First, you gotta have a trauma. A trauma is defined as being exposed to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence, in one or more of the following ways:
1. Directly experiencing it
2. Witnessing in person the trauma as it happened to someone else
3. Learning that the trauma happened to a close family member or friend. If the person dying or nearly dying is the traumatic event, it has to have been violent or accidental
4. The character has been repeatedly and excessively exposed to awful details of traumatic events. This is typically seen in first responders, police officers investigating child abuse, etc.
With Acute Stress Disorder, there are also categories of symptoms like PTSD, but you don’t need to have a specific number from each category – your character just needs nine or more in total.
Intrusion
Repeated, unwanted, inescapable and extremely stressful memories of the trauma
Children’s play may resemble aspects of the trauma
Frequent nightmares about or similar to the trauma
In children, the nightmares may not seem related
Dissociative reactions / Flashbacks - the character feels or acts as if the trauma is happening again. Flashbacks range from relatively mild to severe (to the point where the character loses all awareness of their present surroundings)
Children might reenact the trauma in play
Severe stress OR bodily reactions when the character is exposed to internal or external cues that are similar to the trauma
Avoidance
The character avoids (or tries to avoid) memories, thoughts, or feelings related to the trauma.
The character avoids (or tries to avoid) external reminders (such as people, places, objects, situations) of the trauma.
Dissociative Symptoms
The character can’t remember an important part of the trauma
Altered sense of reality of their self or their surroundings
Negative Mood
The character can’t experience positive emotions, such as happiness, or love
Arousal Symptoms (Not that kind of arousal.)
The character is irritable and angry
This can be seen through verbal or physical aggression towards people or objects
Hypervigilance - see my post here!
Exaggerated startle response - when the character is surprised, they flip out
Problems concentrating
Trouble sleeping / insomnia
All of these symptoms have to have been experienced by the character for between 3 days to 1 month after the trauma. If it lasts longer than 1 month, the character should be reevaluated for PTSD.
These symptoms cause the character stress and seriously makes their life more difficult.

Many wealthy countries—particularly Western, white-dominated ones—treat Southeast Asia as their playground and dumping ground, then have the nerve to blame Southeast Asian countries for the poverty and pollution they helped create. These countries—which enrich themselves by devastating Southeast Asia through war and colonization, and by exploiting its labor and resources—have the capacity to process contaminated plastic waste, but because it’s expensive, they instead export the burden to Southeast Asia, which has far less means.
They’re just like the begpacker, who has the capacity to fund their trip with their own money but instead chooses to leverage their white privilege and exploit the kindness of Southeast Asian locals, and ends up draining rather than boosting the economy for the sake of personal “adventure.”
They’re just like the sweatshop-owning corporation, who has the capacity to pay a living wage and provide safe working conditions but instead chooses to exploit and abuse Southeast Asian labor because turning a profit is more important than valuing Asian lives.
They’re just like the sexpat, who has the capacity to pursue a romantic partner who is a peer but instead chooses to prey on desperate or even trafficked or underaged Southeast Asian victims because they expect no consequences for their depraved and violent behavior, and usually receive none.
These are only recent examples of the ongoing colonization of Southeast Asia. Southeast Asians around the world have long been regulated to positions of service/servitude such as maids, nannies, and nurses. We’re expected to clean up privileged people’s trash because we are seen as trash.
So when we talk about climate change, it’s not enough to call it a crisis—it’s a climate apartheid. We’re not all suffering equally and that’s by design. Southeast Asia and other countries who are majority Brown or Black are being hit first and worst thanks to white/waste supremacy.

Anyway if you’re from the US and you ever wanted to know what tumblr feels like from a non-USAmerican perspective (please note that the rest of the world is not a monolith either and none of these apply without exception):
Everybody’s talking about brands and stores you’ve never seen in real life. You generally assume they exist, but they might as well be one giant prank the rest of the internet is in on.
You find a post that just sounds wrong. It makes no sense. It’s like OP lives in a weird alternate reality. 9/10 times, it’s just some USAmerican Thing.
You’re still not entirely sure how much an inch is. Or a foot. Or even how many of the former there are in the latter. You maybe know your height in feet and inches.
You have no idea how much a pound is. You’d also like to know how the fuck pound shortens to lbs.
What the fuck is “military time”
Somebody talks about some legal process or something similar. They don’t mention which country’s legal system this pertains to. You know anyway.
People talk about politics. None of it pertains to you. Many posts contain guilt tripping. “How can you not care about this?? Why won’t you reblog this?? People need to know this about x candidate for y position!” You’re busy trying to stay on top of the political landscape in your own country.
You pick up some random slang from the internet. Monkey see monkey do. You’re called racist. You didn’t know it was AAVE. You learnt it from black letters on white background, not from the mouths of people whose faces you could see. How would you have known? You try to unlearn it.
People tell you that you must publicly denounce Chick-fil-A or you’re homophobic. You don’t even know what a Chick-fil-A is.
People say you don’t know LGBTQ+ history. What they mean is you don’t know USAmerican LGBTQ+ history. Nobody cares about your country’s history.
You’re “called out” on using an “offensive” term. It’s (a direct translation of) a completely harmless word where you live.
People expect you to have an idea of how far apart 2 USAmerican states are. You barely know geography past your country’s immediate neighbors.
You randomly switch between British and American spellings. Nothing’s real and there are no rules.
People talk about multiple hour car rides and you get twitchy just thinking about it. You suddenly understand why USAmerican cars are so big.
Somebody talks about school shooting drills. You only ever had fire alarm drills.
You see a cool statistic. The study’s only about the US. It’s unfortunately of no use to you.
People misuse/misspell words and names from your native language. It’s tiring.
(You feel sorry for the French. Nobody should be allowed to mangle the word déjà vu like that.)
You’re still not over the fact that USAmerican school children are supposed to say that pledge thing every morning. You’re never getting over that.
You still don’t know why the men are fresh or what the fuck a sophomore is.
Who the fuck pays up first and then fills up gas??? That’s made up, right??
Everybody has a weird obsession with some comfort food you’d never even heard of before you signed up here.
Fellow non-USAmericans, please add anything else you can think of.
and like, i honestly could understand if it’s just on the site. but someone who talks to me in PM constantly mention USAmerican exclusive thing and I don’t understand a shit.

Y'all can keep at it with that “Romeo and Juliet fell in love in five days how immature” shiz but Macbeth went from no murder to yes murder in like one afternoon and I feel like one of those is a significantly bigger problem than the other

choking on water is the worst because how do you stop choking? drink something? well ive got some bad news for you
Lean your head forward, preferably to knee level, and let the water kind of drain out of your mouth. When your are able to, take deep slow breaths. No heimlich maneuver or physical assists from somebody else should be used beyond this, otherwise you could vomit and escalate the issue. Its about keeping the larynx open. Hopefully this helps.
Reblog to fucking save a life.
Can I please get a new nurse?
how is this a universal experience?
male high school bullies: become cops
female high school bullies: become nurses
As a nursing student, I can attest to the amount of bullying and horrible behavior I’ve seen from fellow nursing students. One of the students in my school’s nursing program got kicked out because she was bullying her own patient…
My mom is also a nurse and she has both witnessed AND personally experienced bullying from her fellow nurses. My dad is a nurse as well and has had his own coworkers try to sabatoge him.
This is called “lateral/horizontal violence” and it’s sadly prevalent in the Nursing profession.

10 tips to increase your motivation for study
Motivation is one of the biggest issues for students and it is always great to find a few things that can keep you feeling inspired. Here are my top ten ideas:
start small - set yourself a challenge to work for five to ten minutes. Yes, just five minutes can be enough to get started! If you can get through that five minutes, you will start breaking down that feeling of disinterest and begin to get more into working. A fantastic application that will keep you from using your phone and on a time limit of between 10 minutes and two hours is Forest! However, here are some free alternatives.
plan tomorrow today - I find planning my day - or at least writing down a couple of tasks - before bed is extremely beneficial. In the morning I wake up with intent and get see my main priorities. They don’t have to full-fledged plans or written nicely in my planner but even just small reminders on a post-it note are enough for me to feel more organised.
give yourself a bit of structure - as mentioned, having a plan is a great way to start the day. You might use a planner, a bullet journal or a free printable from me to organise! Set yourself up with 3 key things to finish or do during the day. Give yourself a goal and a reward upon completion. Put time limits on tasks and use a schedule to stay on track.
utilise a studygram/studyblr - basically, the communities on Tumblr and Instagram act as amazing accountability partners! I am constantly motivated by my blog and being able to share my day to day life on Instagram or Snapchat. I definitely have become incredibly motivated and disciplined because of these two communities. If you’re thinking about starting a studyblr, read this. If you’re thinking about starting a studygram, read this. If you already have either, here is how you can use it to further motivate yourself!
set up an inspiring workplace - dedicating a space to work, and only work, is a great way to build a mindset of motivation which kicks in when you sit down. This Pinterest board has loads of inspiration for setups and organisation! You can also add a cute plant, a bright study lamp and some motivational printables for added encouragement!
externalise your short and long-term goals - by making a verbal or written commitment to your goals, you are much more likely to take steps to follow them through. You might want to have a really productive week catching up on all your work, improve your GPA or pass your semester with flying colours. At the start of each week think of the ways you can put your goals into actions. Then at the end of the week reflect on how you did. Track your progress and keep up your motivation by seeing things get a step closer each time!
listen to some music - putting on my favourite songs always put me in a better mindset and feeling more positive. Before a study session or during a break, I will sometimes put on a few songs I’m loving and take a moment to refocus.
don’t force it - if you’re feeling unmotivated to study, try doing something else for a short amount of time. Avoid things that could distract you like browsing Facebook or Instagram. Instead, try tidying your bedroom, organising your upcoming week, read a chapter of a book, or get a drink of water. Alternatively, make an action plan for what you need to do with your next few tasks. That way you’re still making progress with your work but aren’t sitting feeling too unmotivated to actually study.
find some inspiration - there is no shortage of amazing people with incredible stories of success! Podcasts such as The Daily Boost, The Tony Robbins Podcast and The School of Greatness are great examples. Ted Talks are often incredibly insightful and motivating! Search for quotes or stories from your favourite people!
change your mindset - one of the biggest challenges in motivation is adjusting your own perspective. For instance, instead of thinking “I am terrible at this” think “How can I learn this differently to really understand?”. “I made a mistake” think “What can I take away from making this mistake?”. “It isn’t perfect” think “These perfectionist tendencies are only making this more difficult, I can be content with my work”. Having a more positive outcome to each situation should help boost your confidence and motivation!
I hope these few tips are useful and help improve your motivation! If it helps, I would love to hear about it :-)
