Audrey had the kettle on and was frying bacon and eggs when the young lad – Tristan, she remembered – arrived.

“You’re our new housekeeper,” he said cheerfully. He peered into her pan. “Bacon and eggs? I like you already.”

“I’m Mrs Hall,” she said.

“Tristan,” he said with a smile. “I’m Siegfried’s younger brother.”

Audrey poked the bacon and studied him. “You can’t be more than sixteen.” She tried not to sound as curious as she was.

“That’s right. I was a gift sent from heaven,” Tristan said, leaning against the table. “That’s what my parents said. Siegfried, on the other hand, said I was a bloody nuisance. He’s nineteen years older than me.”

Epilogue: Part I

"This gentleman... the owner of the house..." He paused deliberately, pretending he hadn't read his name on the back of a letter hundreds of times. "Farnon. Does he treat you well?" "Mr. Farnon is a good man," she replied, her voice softening at the mention of his name. "He was the one who gave me a job, Edward. He allowed me to start over when I had nothing... he..." Audrey and Edward meet again for the first time in a year, and their relationship is slowly being rebuilt.

New Year's Eve in Darrowby, a celebration at the Drovers to support and distract Maggie, and yet Audrey struggles to really be in the moment because she has cancelled all the plans to see her family in Sunderland. She questions her decision to stay in Darrowby where everyone is celebrating and no one really cares about how she feels.
