Besties (? x reader) part 2
Ao'nung waited nearby for Y/n’s arrival. But as soon as he turned his back to bring her favorite fruits..she had already gone..he missed her sweet return.
“Ugh! We missed them skxang!”
“Ao’nung why don’t we just approach them? They’re our friends.”
“And show Y/n that I’m desperate? Like a lovesick ilu? Really Roxto?”
“It’s called being a friend first.”
Ao’nung didn’t answer right away. His jaw tightened, fixated on the water where distant laughter echoed.
“Yea well we’re friends but after such a long time I can’t promise that we're the same.”
Roxto went quiet, physically cringing at his friend’s pathetic attempt at pretending he didn’t care about girl.
In Y/n's absence, Ao'nung tried to move on. He got carried away with all the girls that threw themselves at him. He'd flirt harmlessly but..he knew better. His heart didn't wish for them like it did for Y/n. All their faces and mannerisms could never match Y/n. Before the distance, he didn't know what to make of their friendship...but didn't see her before..but he saw her now. His heart tugged at him to be near her...to search for her even when she was gone.
Despite Ao’nung’s pride, the distance and the silence he currently forced between them...he was starving.
He was practically malnourished from the girl whose heartbeat for the clan, whose laughter blended with the ocean wind, whose presence felt like home.
And the worst part? Ao’nung had no idea how to feed his own soul.
Once they got older..he didn’t know how to reach for her without feeling weak. He never knew how to speak without sounding desperate. He didn’t know how to love without feeling like he was surrendering his entire being.
Due to his anxiousness near her...Ao'nung always failed to realize that Y/n would accept him with open arms.
How could he start a conversation without making a fool of himself?
Y/n flirtatious actions came like a first language to her. It was natural with Ao'nung. She never showed her nerves, at least not that he noticed. The teasing smiles. Words of comfort when she realized he was tense. Correcting him sweetly when he had done wrong. She was captivating and it made him overthink.
Sleep would never come when he laid awake with the swooshing waves below him...he always thought about Y/n.
A couple hours of the morning passed and the whispers of Y/n’s return fled through the young teens of the village.
Tsireya and Y/n moved through the water side by side, effortless, laughing, bumping into each other mid swim like children again. The water rippled around them, keeping them close. The embracement and lost time from each other was no longer. It seemed as though even the ocean water waited for their return.
The boys who used to hover around Tsireya and Y/n watched from a distance. Most were half hopeful, half defeated. Some adored Tsireya and loved her looks. they knew that with the return of Y/n…she’d finally be more adventurous and persistent on hanging out with others. After all, Tsireya didn’t really go out much during Y/n’s absent…just like Y/n, she focused on her own dedication to the clan.
Although they were unable to catch a clear glimpse of Y/n’s face, they were astonished…as expected, everyone in the village was curious to see how the young Y/n had grown.
“The jewels of the town have returned.”
“The best duo has came back!”
“We gotta get at them bro! Tsireya would be more available! Y/n is perfect for you too!”
Ao’nung flicked and rolled his eyes at the arrogance of those around him...
“You fools are getting at no one! That’s my sister and y/n you’re talking about!”
The boys irritation brushed off Ao'nungs discomfort and making the choice to walk away…deciding that they’d also hold back on talking to Y/n first. But the crowd did not go unnoticed by the besties.
“pst…Y/n! Look to the shore. They’re silly! I mean really…you return and everyone’s curiosity is hysterical.”
“Oh I bet. I don’t want to look over…it’d feel a little awkward. I can feel their eyes on us.”
“Well I hope so! You’ve left me to deal with them all on my own.”
“You can keep them! I don’t want it.”
“Then it’s settled! Neither of us do. But oh my Eywa…just turn around they’re so funny.”
Y/n slowly turned her head, nerves tightening in her chest. Cheeks purple from embarrassment. Being back around people her age felt strange, almost wrong. After spending time with the elders, she felt older than them in ways they wouldn’t understand.
She had learned patience. Restraint. Respect. Tradition shaped, settled and strengthened her.
The small group of boys turned away, pretending not to care. But Roxto didn’t move. He nudged his best friend, a quiet elbow to the side, silently telling him to at least wave.
“Cmon do something! Anything!”
Roxto whispered to Ao’nung. A forced smile tugged at his lips, stiff and nervous. He couldn’t pull off the nonchalant act like the others, even if he tried. He couldn't do it when she was swimming right there. The girls waved right back, continuing their conversation..
“Reya! I haven’t even said hello to the boys.”
“Oh we definitely should! They’ve been waiting for your arrival as well!”
Y/n’s cheeks warmed and she tilted her head away. She desperately tried to hold back the small smile that was sneaking away. When she finally spoke, her voice came out softer than she meant it to. She was so unsure what to think.
Ao’nung looked....different.. Broader shoulders, sharper features and definitely beginning his journey to his adult form.
“Just like we have. Cmon!”
They cut through the waves and toward the dock where Ao’nung and Roxto waited at the edge. Y/n tried to push her nerves aside. Her chest tightened for a moment but excitement bubbled over. She was more than thrilled to enjoy the presence of her old friends.
Her steps quickened, arms already lifting as a small smile broke through.
“Hey! Ao’nung and Roxto! It’s really nice to see you!” (Y/n)
As one, the two girls climbed onto the dock, shaking water from their hair and joined the two boys. For Ao’nung, everything seemed to slow down…he couldn’t believe his eyes. He was impressed to say the least. Y/n remained as stunning as he remembered…maybe even more
“We’ve waited so long. I’m sure all the stories you have are crazy!” (Roxto)
Y/n laughed softly and stepped forward, wrapping her arms around Roxto without a second thought. But when it came to Ao’nung, she hesitated. He seemed…distracted and lost in thought.
Though a flicker of doubt lingered that maybe they wouldn’t be as close as before…Y/n leaned in, allowing herself to close the distance despite the clear tension. Ao’nung stayed quiet. His arms wrapped around her softly, holding onto her like this fleeting moment would never occur again.
“Sorry..I just can’t believe it…” (Ao’nung)
“You’re telling me! It felt terribly long of a trip.” (Y/n)
Roxto and Tsireya gave each other knowing looks. They saw the story unfold before them. The question is…was Ao’nung willing to do anything about it?
“It should’ve been longer.” (Ao’nung)
Y/n gasped looking at Ao’nung, questioning his statement.
“Im joking! B-because everything will return back to normal…with you two girls terrorizing the village.” (Ao’nung)
The hip of Y/n’s shoved Ao’nung playfully, waving a hand to brush off his statement.
“Yea right…I’m sure you and your posse have down enough terrorizing for the both of us.” (Y/n)
“Definitely! They got in trouble for having races with the ilu late at night all in reward for a bottle of alcohol they found at some guy's mauri.” (Tsireya)
Their sweet laugher interrupted by the voices of their parents instructing them to head over.
“Children! We’d love for you to sit near us at the communal dinner tonight,” Y/n’s mother called.
Ronal stood confident and content beside her.
“Yes. We have plenty to discuss.”
Y/n felt that sentence settle in her chest like a stone.
Her mother clapped her hands lightly.
“So, you girls should head to the mauri and get ready.”
“Of course,” Tsireya said gently.
Y/n nodded too, but her smile came a second too late. Because she saw it, the guilt that flicked...her mother tried to swallow it. Y/n’s chest tightened and she looked away. The teen pretended she didn't notice their persistence.
As they stood, he moved closer...gently placing his hand on her back. He hoped she wouldn't pull away from his comfort...and she didn't.
Who knew the future Olo’eyktan could be such a softie?
The girls walked away with the boys. Yet, nothing eased the suspision in that conversation.
“That was awkward right?” Y/n muttered, glancing back for half a second before forcing her eyes forward.
“Definitely. It was so weird.” (Tsireya)
“Well, we’ll leave you two to get ready for later.“ (Roxto)
The group split and the boys were forced to listen to the sweet sounds of their laughter and footsteps against the grainy sand going off in the distance.
“That was awkward even for me. I wonder what their agenda is.” (Roxto)
“Well, that doesn’t matter bro..what matters is I have to figure out how to get Y/n back.”
"Back...” Roxto looked at Ao'nung as if he was a genuine fish out of water.
"Yes bro. It felt weird seeing her again" (Ao'nung)
“Weird?” Roxto scoffed. “You’re the one who made it awkward, my friend.”
“What? no? I was being kind.”
“Right…you were as stiff as spear. You kept tripping over your own thoughts. I don't think I've ever seen you such a mess.”
“Cmon get off my back. I tried but she’s just too-“
“Pretty. I know. But I’m quite surprised since you’ve been with other pretty girls on the island and none of them do that to you.”
“It’s because it’s Y/n. She has her way of things. I don’t know. it’s like she can get whatever out of me and I can’t even argue against it.”
“Well…she’s a real lady now. You must treat her with respect and care. No childish things…you are under watch now.”
“Tsk..as if. I’d never let a woman tell me what to do.”
“That’s your issue bro. A girl like Y/n needs to be catered too. All her needs and worries shouldn’t be you. She shouldn’t have to tell you anything as long as you fit her morals.”
“What exactly would that be?”
Before Roxto could finish, the sharp call of horns cut through the air. clicks of new arrivals were being heard.
The boys exchanged a look and took off toward the crowd.
They rushed from Y/n's home, diving into the water and mounting their ilus. The ocean drifting as they swam toward the center of the village.
By the time they reached the shore....they walked toward the front of the lines with quiet confidence.
The unfamiliar brothers shyly smiled at the girls.
Both girls returned it but Y/n’s was replaced with a scowl when she saw how Ao’nung and Roxto behaved
“How are they supposed to swim?” (Roxto)
“Do not. Roxto! Ao’nung!” (Tsireya)
Ao’nung immediately placed his hands up in defense once he saw the lookon Y/n's face. He also couldn't ignore the irritation in Tsireyas voice.
He didn't understand it. Why defend outsiders? What relationship could possibly develop from them?
The youngest boy, Lo’ak had muttered a small hey to Tsireya sending her over the moon and Neteyam had offered a small ‘I see you’ greeting to the girls.
With all due respect, Y/n didn’t quite understand their arrival. She also didn’t have to be rude like the others. All she did was return the gesture to the warrior. The mutual respect was one that Ao’nung wouldn’t forget. His face hardened at the scene.
When the Jake sully ask for uturu, worry settled in Y/n’s chest. They weren’t visiting. They were running from a war.
Her mind raced. If war follows them…then it'll come to us. She finally understood Ronal’s hesitation.
But when Ronal’s torment began...Her critiques about their bodies and difference caused Y/n's heart to ache. They were still living beings. You could be cautious without being cruel.
She hesitated on joining Tsireya and Ao’nung when they were instructed to show them around. Despite her lack of enthusiasm, Y/n followed.
The leader of the line was Tsireya, happily showing off her home while carrying their belongings. Y/n remained in the middle behind a girl around her age. She stayed her distance, silent to not disturb their curiosity.
Neteyam watched closely behind her…she was gorgeous to him and so was her partner in crime. They seemed easy going. The pair had a certain charming nature about them that neither him or his brother could shake off.
When they arrived at the Mauri...Y/ns thoughts were interrupted.
“This is for you…your new home!” Tsireya spoke gently.
“Yea..yea this will work. This is great! It’s nice right?”
The father said trying to bring enthusiasm. But the mother immediately dropped her bag in disappointment.
Y/n felt irritation spark instantly. You come here asking for safety, and this is how you respond? Y/n couldn’t believe it.
She nudged Tsireya, annoyed.
“They just need time.” Tsireya whispered.
“well I wouldn’t act like that if I-“
They may have disagreed like sisters but they compromised with each other…always.
Y/n exhaled through her nose and stepped inside the home, placing the remaining bags down carefully.
Tsireya continued, welcoming as always.
“We’ll let you get settled in. Since there is day light left, I’d suggest that you guys join us for a swim in an hour or so! We’ll be at the dock near your home. Y/n and I regularly do it, so we don’t mind. Just a head start for tomorrow when we actually begin training.”
Being welcoming and supportive was tsireyas thing. All y/n could do was shyly smile at the family, confused on how to express an encouraging message.
The duo peacefully left the Mauri but the weight on Y/n chest couldn’t let go. When they walked from the family's home, Y/n finally let go of her breath.
“You have to be nice Y/n.”
“Be nice to who? Those freaks? Y/n don’t worry about them-“
Y/n interuppted Ao'nung..
“Just because I’m uneasy doesn’t mean we get to be mean about it.”
“Right…which is why Ao’nung meant...don’t worry about them. We’ll help them settle in just fine!!”
Roxto tried to ease the disagreement between Ao’nung and Y/n. From then on, he stayed quiet. She was the only one who could silence him.
“I just..adjusting will be easy...If they lack skill, they’ll fall behind in our way of life.”
“That is very true which is why we’ll teach them! Together!”
Y/n immediately stopped in her tracks turning to Tsireya like she was crazy..
“My father wouldn’t allow that-“
“I have to train Tsireya. This isn’t something I can just teach. They really are like babies and I say that kindly..I don’t know if I’ll have time.”
“Well…just tell your parents that you’re training patience and stealth. I’m sure they won’t mind it!”
Y/n held in her argument and simply nodded. Tsireya always knew how to make her agree. It did irritate Ao’nung though, why must his sister be so pushy?...But if teaching the freaks meant more time beside Y/n...why not just tolerate it?
The four friends waited at the dock swimming peacefully and making the most out of their time. Seemingly, natural habits fell back into place..Y/n and Ao’nung drifted a little further…
“So tell me about this race with the ilu quest that you went on.”
“I won that! But I must say first that surprisingly I resisted the alcohol.”
“Really? Are you sureeee?”
“Yes! I had to be up early in the morning so I gave it to the rest of the boys.”
“Responsible? I like it on you. Must've learned a lot while I was gone. I mean beating a race at riding an ilu. You weren’t exactly the fastest before I left.”
“I mean…you know me! When I see something that I want. I got to have it! I love it. I go…I mean I go crazy for it.”
“What are you talking about?”
His heart was pounding at his chest..this was his moment to confess. do it.
Y/n widened her eyes in surprise but immediately Ao’nung backed out...panicking.
“You and your many talents! You go after what you want. I’m sure you can relate you know?”
“Right..of course I can.”
There was some sort of disappointment in Y/n’s voice. Ao'nung noticed. He didn't want to be delusional but for a moment there she’d looked at him like she was ready to hear more...honest.
And he had stepped back. Again.
She looked out toward the water instead of at him now, pretending to admire whats below them. She brushed off the fact that she hadn’t just offered him the chance to be open with her.
“Like you! As a training warrior I can be fun, serious, light on my feet. I mean you name it! I could do whatever you want. You just tell me what you want and I’ll be that for you.”
Y/n was unsure what to make of his statement. The girl just blinked at him... Is he trying to be funny? Flirty? Relatable? He didn’t fail at being all three
“You’re dumb.” Y/n muttered, giggling at his stupidity.
The idiots looked at each other as their world went silent. They smiled shyly, neither of them looking away this time. Their eyes said everything they were too scared to admit. The gaze held a soft, confused and overwhelmed emotion. Yet they didn’t know how to navigate it. In Y/n’s mind, it’d always have to be the boy. Ao’nung goes first! The man makes the step…
Ao'nung never made it clear enough for her.
The noise around them faded into nothing. No laughter, no people. Just the water embracing the duo. Just them together.
Their moment was interrupted with an impatient Tsireya.
“Y/n! Ao’nung! Hello! Come over-“
Just like that, in a snap of a finger. The moment was over and Y/n swiftly raced to the group. Ao’nung shortly followed after memorizing the moment that just had.
The introductions went by quickly and the group decided to take a dive.
Unfortunately for them, the three siblings clearly struggled to ignore the burning sensation in their lungs. They reached the surface of the water, gasping for air. Y/n noticed it but hoped they’d pull through. A part of her felt guilty for judging. It was clear they were trying.
‘What’s wrong with them?’ (Ao’nung)
‘Those guys are bad divers.’ (Roxto)
‘Stop. They’re learning.’ (Tsireya)
‘Yes and we shall teach them.’ (Y/n)
The four friends went to check in on the family.
“Are you alright?” (Tsireya)
“You’re too fast! Wait for us!” (Tuk)
“Of course, Tuk, that’s a good reminder. We’ll go at your speed next time.” (Y/n)
For a brief second, Neteyam steadied his breathing and looked at Y/n. He offered her a grateful smile, seeing her bring calmness to Tuk.
“Yes and while we do that…just breathe. Breathe.”
Ao’nung and Roxto popped up like an intrusive akulas.
“You are not good divers. Maybe good at swimming through trees but..”
One twat to the head and Ao’nung smile fled. Tsireya couldn’t stand his immaturity. Y/n bit the inside of her cheek, attempting to stop herself from laughing. She understood his joke. however, this is something the forest people clearly aren't built for. Once they'd master this lifestyle...then we can joke.
“Cmon bro..we don’t speak this finger talk. We don’t know what you’re saying.” (Neteyam)
“I will teach you.” (Tsireya)
“Yea where is Kiri?” (Roxto)
“I saw her amongst the coral reefs. She’s a quick learner.” (Y/n)
“For now..let’s just enjoy a swim together. You can continue to play around with breath control.” (Tsireya)
The group continued on with their diving at a slower pace but Ao’nung’s patience was withering. The water felt tighter around him, like the ocean itself was waiting centuries for them to explore it. He pushed ahead, then turned, swimming backwards in front of Y/n with a bright smile. He moved his neck forward motioning for her to follow him...playful and encouraging.
There was urgency there. A quiet plea wanting Y/n to take him away from the people he didn’t want to know and the lessons he didn’t want to teach.
‘We must go at their paste.’
‘Tsireya and Roxto have that handled’
That’s all Ao’nung needed to see before he gently grabbed Y/n and turned over fully to swim forward with her. After some hesitation, the young teen pulled her hand back, water rippling between them.
Just a few feet away Neteyam and Lo’ak watched. They saw y/n put a little distance between them. Not enough to leave, just enough to see each other.
‘But wouldn’t it be rude?’
‘Rude? I’m sure they won’t mind our absence. We’re just swimming.’
‘It’s a learning experience. Would you want me to leave you?’
‘I would never have you go through something this excruciatingly slow.’
Y/n rolled her eyes at Ao’nung brushing him away, yet he pulled himself toward her
‘You didn’t even want to do this. What’s the cause now?’
‘Friends. New friends. That’s what they could be.’
‘Right…well you can invite them anywhere else but for now I, someone you’ve known longer, ask you to come with me.’
Ao’nung huffed out and continued to swim near Y/n as they joined the group. The girls would point out pretty fishes or shells that the rest of the group could take interest in. Neteyam and Lo’ak would constantly linger close to them…almost too close for Ao’nungs comfort.
Of course...Ao'nung respected Y/n enough to listen to her worries about being rude. But inside he wanted nothing more than to speak to her about everything pandora could offer...away from everyone.
Jealousy didn’t look good on Ao’nung. It burned and he had no idea how to tame it, let alone befriend it. Every time he caught Neteyam and Y/n sharing a look, his jaw tightened. Neteyam stood closer than any other boy she allowed and moved like he belonged in her space.
Ao’nung was only driving himself crazy as he turned glances into stories. Y/n looked at the boys the same way she looked at everyone. She just wanted a genuine friendship. Plus, she’d have an opportunity to learn about their culture if she did cater to them well enough.
Ao’nung had only just gotten her back. The fear of losing her again made his heartache like saltwater on a wound. So, he too watched and swam near her. He never let his guard down. For rest of his life, he wanted to be included in her world. The boy was beyond desperate in a way he’d never admit out loud.
Despite what Ao’nung thought was subtle, the other boys felt his discomfort. It was almost territorial. Neteyam noticed the looks, the hovering, the tension sitting just beneath Ao’nung’s struggle of patience.
The irony of Ao’nungs worry was hilarious. Neteyam wasn’t looking at Y/n the way Ao’nung feared.
Yes, he'll admit...she was beautiful. breathtaking even! But right now...his curiosity burned for something else entirely. He wanted to learn the Metkayinas way of life.
Y/n was draped in warrior gear and jewels that moved with her in the water. Intricate strands of shells and carved beads lined against her skin. Everything earned. Everything hers.
There was no better way to understand the Metkayina than to learn how they survived, breathed, fought, and belonged. To Neteyam, she wasn’t just a person to search for love in.
No, she was much more than that. She seemed knowledgeable. Almost like a bridge to what he needed. If he understood her world, if he learned their ways, he could stand taller beside his father. There’s no way he could falter behind Toruk Makto’s shadow again. Neteyam’s mind was on duty and legacy of the burden he'd carry for his father.
At the end of their dive...the group surfaced again.
“You should come to dinner tonight. Communal meals are the best!” (Tsireya)
All the siblings lit up at the sound of dinner and chance to rest.
“Yes, it'll help getting to know each other as well.” (Y/n)
Ao’nung said nothing. Yet his tense nature returned.
They began swimming back toward the shore, the group spreading out naturally.
Y/n slowed when she noticed Ao'nungs irritation. The stiffness in his walk and the silence gave him away.
So, she matched his pace...walking beside him. She always chose to correct him or confront him in private.
“You’re thinking loud again." (Y/n)
“I’m fine." Ao'nung huffed out.
She didn’t argue or speak. He was going to talk...he wanted to. She knew he'd come around.
Ao’nung wasn't expressive with his true feelings in front of others. He was the type of boy who believed affection was something sacred. It was meant to be kept private with no interruptions.
But for Y/n? He was trying. He tried to soften the sharp edges of pride that had always protected his emotions.
“You can say it..I won't tell..or judge."
He glanced at her then, sighing before he spoke.
“I wanted it to be just us...you know? Like the four of us hanging out tonight. If this was the case...us going with those forest people. Then I would've went off with my friends. We won't get a chance to catch up."
“They’re new...” Y/n remined.
“...you aren't and besides...we'll always have plenty of time to catch up."
His shoulders slightly dropped and his ears calmed at her reassurance. Ao'nung moved himself closer, placing an arm around her. He hugged her softly and sat with his decision to stay...choosing her over and over again in his own stubborn way.
Y/n let him. She knew that when no one else was looking...Ao'nung felt comfortable enough to adore her. All he strugled with was being brave about it.
The teens sat near each other with the sully family...wanting to merge together in a way of making up for the lost time…but their parents. They had bigger plans.
“Ah Ao’nung I’ve heard you’ve been practicing at becoming a great warrior.” (Y/n's father)
“Yes sir. I’ve had a couple missions and hunts alongside my father.” (Ao'nung)
“He’s done it all!…if only there was someone beside you just as perfect.” (Tonowari)
“Like a special girl…ay y/n-“ (Y/n's father)
“What! What’d i say?” Y/n's dad said shameless, confused as to where he went wrong?
“Ugh!…Oh my father.." Y/n muttered, embarassed at their implications.
"it’s so wonderful to see you again Ao’nung...Look at that arm band! I wonder who made it!” (Y/n)
Y/n laughed going over to touch it, memorizing and recalling the hours of work she put into it for Ao’nung. She loved that he still wore it..even if he was about to outgrow it.
It was clear that the parents would not discuss what they wanted to tonight considering Toruk Makto’s family was invited beside them, so the parents decided to leave the pair for now..the teens continued their own conversation.
The nerves of Ao’nung erupted when he abruptly jumped at her touch and close proximity. Roxto couldn’t help but roll his eyes at his best friend's stupidity…so experienced and for what?
“I-uh why don’t you tell me more about your voyage?”
The adoration in Y/n’s eyes changed when she talked passionately about her trip. She looked across the whole table, holding onto her hands with excitement.
“I loved it. The cultures of different clans were beautiful and we got to see so many things. The trades we did were astonishing! The rough waters were a perfect way to get practice. Getting an opportunity to become a strong warrior just made it all wonderful.”
Neteyam was the first to respond. Being a warrior was his specialty and he was beyond interested.
“Cultures..warrior work…wonderful. You sound like you’ve learned so much Y/n. I’m sure one day you are going to reach the best of your ability as a warrior. Does the metkayina have a different way of completing iknimaya-“ (Neteyam)
“Yes and just like a great warrior. I'm sure one day you are going to make a man very very happy..” (Ao'nung)
Ao’nung motioned to himself with a shy, playful smile, gathering the courage to flirt with Y/N, letting the challenge of Neteyam's presence push him to finally speak from the heart.
“Yes and I hope he makes you very very happy. Behind every man with success is a beautiful woman.”
Y/n gasped knowingly acting interested. She wanted to joke with him..
“Yes! And I’ll cook for him and he at his beck and call..”
But of course, she hadn’t expected him to actually follow along.
“Mhm..that sounds..that sounds so good.”
Neteyam and Lo’ak almost chocked on their beverages watching the sight. It was clear Y/n was being sarcastic to them. Tsireya and Roxto watched closely, holding in their laughter. Kiri couldn’t help but roll her eyes at the boy who teased them yet was clueless on how to have a conversation.
Y/n immediately pulled away with her arms crossed.
“Ugh..are you kidding me? Is that how you see a woman? Didn’t depict you as that type of man Ao’nung.”
“Right? I mean you’d think he was taught differently especially because my father holds mother at such a high pedestal.”
Tsireya dug a deeper hole for her brother…not helping him and enjoyed her meal while doing it.
“We’re only here to make men happy?…ahem. I expected you to think more civil.”
Ao’nung blinked, realizing the moment had gone…a little sideways. He gave a small smile but his eyes turned to Y/n for a brief second. It was softer than before. He spoke with them, inaudibly apologizing.
He gave an apologetic smile and leaned a little closer, speaking just enough that only Y/n could hear.
“Uh…what I meant was…you’re amazing,” he said lightly, tapping the side of his drink, “Any guy would be lucky…really lucky…to be with someone like you.” He cleared his throat, glancing at her with another shy smile.
Y/n rolled her eyes but a tiny smirk appeared. “Oh? So, you were talking about me?” she teased quietly, continuing their conversation privately.
Ao’nung’s grin faltered for a second, then he leaned just a little closer. “Maybe…just a little,” he stated, shrugging again like it was natural but his tone carried care.
Y/n hid her smile, shaking her head. “Hmm…you’re sneaky.”
“Maybe…or maybe I just take notice of things.”
Ao'nung leaned back. His posture slightly into her space. Then he let the conversation go back to her stories.
He felt so close to her. One moment he was pretending to sip his drink but his gaze kept finding Y/n. Ultimately, he settled his chin on his hand watching her peacefully. He couldn’t help the soft tug in his chest, a quiet yearning that had nothing to do with trying to impress nor tease anyone.
He watched as she animatedly described the rough waters she had to push through while carrying pounds of bags from trades, she couldn’t even count. The rest of the group enjoyed her story.
While, Ao’nung settled in her presence. How can someone be so gracious?
When Y/n began recounting a particularly move she’d made in one of her adventures, Ao’nung’s eyes softened. His muscles relaxed at the voice of Y/n. He found himself yearning and waiting for every word, not because he wanted to comment. But because seeing her this confident and passionate made his heart swell.
He wanted nothing more than to share that same pride with her or share secret tales but he couldn’t bring himself to. Ao’nung could but only with Y/n…he refused to share that same experience with others. His tales were for Y/n only.
As a best friend, Roxto couldn’t have been more relieved seeing everything play out. He leaned back, letting out a quiet and satisfied sigh. Finally! Something! About time, he thought, smiling to himself.
He was relieved that he’d no longer have to hear Ao’nung’s endless complaints about missing Y/n. She was finally here…feeding his soul.
Ao’nung for once was quiet, calm and focused his attention on her. Roxto grinned knowingly. He could see the subtle heightened breathing in Ao’nung’s chest. He didn’t need to say anything for Roxto to practically hear his heart beat out his chest.
“Finally,” Roxto muttered under his breath, still holding back a laugh, “the boy’s actually making moves”...
Despite the good ending of the night, the following days burned a hole in Ao'nungs heart. Yet he didn't have the guts to confront Y/n...he refused to anger her.
He was upset every time she joined Tsireya on private lessons with Neteyam and Lo'ak. Y/n was more than willing to help....so open. It hurt that no matter what he said...it felt like Y/n would choose to be with them than him.
Yes. Maybe it's because he couldn't see behind their tainted DNA...maybe he couldn't see behind their origins...but he grew furious at them more when he believed that y/n favored them. She saw them for everything that they were and embraced them.
He finally got the guts begin the courting for Y/n. Every morning, he'd show with her favorite fruits. Every afternoon, he'd make time to speak with her. Every night, he made sure to walk her back to her mauri. He'd savor every moment.
Still, he felt his effort were turned away. He couldn't tell if she noticed or cared...it burned. His chest physically hurt not being able to tell her that he was in love with her. Tsireya was too caught up in her love bubble to notice..his despair. So, he was the one to approach her. He searched for the answers to end his misery.
"Going out with Lo'ak and Neteyam?"
Tsireya leaned back, curiosity striking her.
"Yes...Y/n's going. Why?"
"Just answer this one question and I'll let you leave...I'll leave them alone."
"Does she like him...do they like each other?"
For the first time, Tsireya saw her brother with zero certainty. If she said yes, if it were true...it'd kill him. Truthfully...she didn't know the answer. She had been wrapped up in her own situation that she failed to discuss Y/n's feelings or indulge on her and Neteyam's conversations.
"i-I don't know brother. Truly...I do not know."
"Don't lie to me Reya...spare me the pain."
"We haven't exactly spoken about boys...or at least she hasn't."
Ao'nung didn't respond, turning over onto his side of the mauri to rest on his misery. But tsireya couldn't leave knowing her brothers was pining for his dearest Y/n.
"Tell her. Just do it, before someone else does. If she cancels plans to talk with you...then you'll know. But trust me when I say that...Y/n...if she still does...she'll always have a place for you in your heart Ao'nung. Just talk to her."
Without another word, she walked away, leaving Ao’nung to gather himself. When he saw Y/n rushing out of her mauri, he wanted to be a coward, to turn away and let her go…especially when she looked so happy.
But he stayed. He watched and waited for her to notice. His presence was loud and she smelt his sweet scent.
Y/n's voice faltered when she noticed his distressed expression. Ao'nung was about to risk it all for Y/n. He was going to throw the years of their friendship down the drain for her...
"...Ao'nung? What's wrong? Are you ok?"
"No. No, I'm not ok...and I'd really like to speak with you. Please. Just come with me."
For the first time, Ao'nung didn't care about the desperation in his tone. He pleaded with Y/n as if she were the only thing keeping him alive. This dreadful feeling would never be over until he was able to place kisses upon her shoulder...be the one to cherish her laughter. His sleep would never come and he'd continue stirring in it if he kept being jealous of everything that got to fall upon her skin. Ao'nung envied the hair or sun that got to rest upon her skin..or the wind, water that rippled against her clothes.
"Ok. Yea...of course I'll go with you."
She said it with so much certainty. She didn't hesitate to join him, riding away with him an ilu. The rapid breathing Ao'nung was having worried her. His anxiety even showed in the way he rode...they split through the water faster than it could get the chance to push against them. He had took them in the cave...one he dreamed of plenty of times. Where he always imagined his confessions to Y/n took place.
When the arrived, Ao'nung gripped on her hand tightly. He led them to the brightest area of the cave. the area where it held Y/n's favorite flowers..'
"Ao'nung..what is this? Why are we here?"
"I ask you to answer honestly...please Y/n. Do you like him...do you like Neteyam?"
"we're just friends" Y/n said gently...but Ao'nungs rambling couldn't wait. He was impatient to finally let go of his thoughts that he didn't listen to her answer.
"“Ao’nung, if you would just listen-"
After being cut off, she gave up. She stood patiently...allowing his brain and thoughts to process.
"I can't offer the privilege to say I'm an accomplished warrior or that I am the man the man of your dreams yet...Im working on it. I have nothing to give but my love...all of it. I’ve tried to wait, to hold back, but I can’t anymore."
"Oh Ao'nung..." Y/n stated. But she said it with so much adoration...His worries were not one that she imagined. He was everything she wanted and more.
"I swear with all my heart that I will never ever stop loving you." (Ao'nung)
"And I will never stop loving the man who fights from the heart.." (y/n)
Y/n gently placed her hand on his shoulders, comforting him. This was Ao'nung's way of fighting for her. He finally got over his pride, fears and decided to push himself forward.
“My whole life is you I can’t breathe because I am waiting for you, you own me, you control me, I-I belong to you. You think I could possibly like anyone else? Nothing else would work out..because I love you. I'm so in love with you." (Y/n)
"Good because...you're in me...it's like you're a disease. I'm infected by you. I just can't...I can't think about anything or anybody and I can't sleep! Eywa...it feels good just saying that. I know it won't be easy...but I want to do whatever it takes because I want you."
Y/ns tears fell calmly embracing Ao'nung. She always loved his dramatics...his charm...his way of words. He knew exactly what to say to her.
The teens shared an innocent kiss...and finally...Ao'nung got what he wanted. For the rest of the night, they discussed all the beauties pandora could offer...

From a curtain in the mauri, Y/n and Ao'nungs parents peaked through. They squinted to the best of their ability, not wanting to miss any second of the two lovers enjoying their lunch while the sun set.
“Oh, thank Eywa,” Y/n’s father groaned, throwing his hands up. “They finally confessed! I was preparing my speech about them being promised to one another but....we did that Tonowari. We definitely gave them the final push that night with all those hints."
The women rolled their eyes at their dramatics.
"We were the ones with the bright idea...but we knew we didn't need to say it. It was going to fall in place for them eventually." (Ronal)
Tonowari smirked, ridding his body of any stress. "To be fair, I was expecting Ao’nung to come out crying from that cave after confessing their feelings. But…look at my boy confident as...well as much as he can be. I think your girl scares him.”
Y/n’s father leaned in, whispering for only Tonowari to hear
“If she's anything like her mother...she definitely does scare him.”
And with that, the four of friends settled back...laughing amongst themselves.

I thought this was such a cutie story. I hope you enjoyed it. Ao'nung seems like such a yearner. I tried my best to represent him. He's so prideful that he literally self sabotages but I feel like he'll just fall apart when he really needs it. A man who yearns is a man that earns!
!Fun fact!
some of the jewelry pieces Neteyam noticed on y/n were made by Ao'nung and Tsireya! Roxto was the first to know after he confessed. Tsireya definitely told Lo'ak their love story while they watched them from a far. Y/n no longer held that old tradition about mixed humans and navis. She got to know the sully's better, saw no difference in personality and only in appearance. This obviously didn't bother her. She also was fine with it because she knew Tsireya had a crush on lo'ak. Often times, when Y/n and Neteyam would speak it'd be about culture and warrior stuff. Its what makes them great friends!
