when i read catching fire to my younger brother recently, i didn't tell him how many books there were. he told me he hated how anxious he felt when we read catching fire, because there was no way of knowing about the rebels. i tried to capture that feeling in this edit.

So, ah— I kinda forgot about Hayffie day until I saw another post about it. Ironic, considering how much thought I’ve been giving these two as of late. So, in lieu of a regular celebratory post, I’d like to ask you all a question:

How do you interpret movie!Effie’s sigh of relief at having reaped Haymitch for the 75th Hunger Games?

She believed Peeta was safe from the Games for good this time

She wouldn’t have to watch Peeta die

She wouldn’t have to watch Katniss and Peeta be pitted against each other again

Katniss wouldn’t have to go into the Games with her lover

She believed Haymitch would do a better job of protecting Katniss/keeping allies

She knew that Katniss would still have Peeta if Haymitch died

She suspected Peeta would volunteer

Peeta is her favorite

Some nuance/variation that I haven’t thought up

The hardest part of being a Hayffie writer is that there are days when I just wanna smash them together like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich but then I realize that I've written my fic to be very intentional, to have an actual plot, so like. I kinda have to follow that and not just go,

"And then they kissed..."

EVERY. SINGLE. CHAPTER.

I guess y'all can take this as a promise that I will get there, eventually.

I mean— I’m realizing now that I’m only on Chapter 10, and it’s coming up soon, but this qualifies as a personal slow-burn because it takes so long to write them in a satisfying way. I just love them too much 😭

Effie’s sigh of relief while calling Haymitch’s name at the 75th reaping will haunt me for the rest of my life

So like. Maybe I’m delirious from the ungodly amount of pasta and birthday cake I had this evening, but I got to thinking about the words to a couple of my favorite Hayffie songs…and then I came up with the saddest thing ever. I’d say it’s a headcanon, but I don’t even wanna call it that, because I hate this idea and I don’t know why it came to me.

So like. Every Hayffie fan knows the moment in Mockingjay pt. 2 where Finnick and Annie are married, when we see Haymitch and Effie sitting together. Haymitch sort of glances in her direction, then nods to himself as if affirming something. And like— maybe he’s thinking about Effie, their relationship, what it might be like if they had a proper wedding— who knows? All we really do know is that by the end of the movies, they’re comfortable enough to share a kiss and he tells her “Don’t be a stranger.”

But like. What if he DID propose? What if he DID propose to her at some point after the trials were over, when they were both able to decide where to go and what to do with their lives, and she said NO?!?

We do see her crying at their goodbye, and I think for the longest time I assumed it was more of a mutual decision between them that a relationship would never work, but like— what if Effie is crying because SHE CHOSE TO LET HIM GO?!?

I’m such an angsty little sucker tonight, idk 😭
