Hi there, whoever’s still with me.
I missed you.
Anyone else having mixed feelings about the twins leaving Tumblr? On the one hand, it’s not a great site and it’s getting worse and you want to leave it yourself sometimes, it takes up lots of time and is often upsetting and band members are ditching it bit by bit. And it’s not like you had much contact with those two anyway, what with David’s itchy blocking finger…
On the other hand, to follow them on Twitter or Instagram would mean more social media. I don’t need more. Tumblr’s a time sink and I’d have more time without it.
But there’s still a little community here and it feels horrible to have someone just shrug and walk away. I don’t know if I’d call it triggering in my case, but considering my history of being a non-entity to my own family and “friends” as a kid such that I had nightmares for decades about being left behind in the dark with no one even noticing or trying to speak and not being able to make a sound…
Seems like it shouldn’t matter, but I can’t be the only one who finds it more upsetting than it really should be.
I think it’s probably a good move for them in their personal capacities. For the fandom, it kinda sucks. But we all know tumblr is awful, especially for creators like them.
Also the SPG blog is still here.
While it’s awesome to interact with David and Bunny, having the ability for us to interact with them opens them up to the worst parts of the internet, and most often it’s not worth it. They are going to have to limit their fan interactions to live at concerts.
If I were them, I’d do everything through The Cavalcadium and set up Wordpress to publish to all of the social media sites… and leave the only online interaction on the Cavalcadium where they have complete control and can block people, IP addresses, as well as block proxies, tor, and vpn’s. By increasing the regidity of the sign up process, they will make online harassment much harder to do.
Yeah… sound advice! I guess it doesn’t have to be the end.
The Cavalcadium needs some love and Tumblr has always been problematic, sometimes outrageously so. So it’s hard to give way entirely to feeling angry and abandoned when they honestly should have backed away from some of this stuff a long time ago for their own sake. And I see that we will still get some posts from a Walter Girl and of course the SPG blog as Emmi said. And as far as I know, Sam will still toss up a drawing from time to time. Also nice.
I mostly just want to see a few photos from whatever they’re doing in the way of concerts or conventions, announcements about music and merch, just to maintain a presence here. If that continues, I dunno that it will be a serious issue. Having them both go all at once was just a bit of a shock.
I’ve been a fan for almost four years now. which doesn’t seem like much in comparison to, like, KISS fans or something but for this band is enough to make me feel like a croaky old-timer. What’s the SPG equivalent of a toothless Deadhead? A Rustbucket? I’m like that. Anyway, when they were at the height of their social media love affair, about two years ago, with the constant Livestreams/SPG Hours/Vines/Instagrams/art streams/Tumblr posts, I foresaw a day when they were going to burn themselves out. I recognized that we were in a golden age of band-fan engagement, and it wasn’t going to last. Every wonderful moment was colored with a tiny little tinge of sadness as I told myself, Hold on to these moments.
But I still wasn’t ready for how much it hurt when they day did come and they shut out their fandom on Tumblr. Yeah, there are awful people on Tumblr, but that’s where the fans are, too. That’s where the fanart and the fanfics and the discussions go. Stepping away is one thing, but deleting their blogs entirely will come back to bite them in the ass. They deleted nearly five years of history and fan engagement. And it’s not that the community can’t survive without David and Bunny’s own blogs existing, but over the years it’s noticeably degraded and there’s a very shoddy net already holding things together. That you could put yourself out there with some art, put up a picture of yourself in robot makeup, or post an observation and stand a chance of being validated by the band with a reblog - that meant a lot to a lot of people. Without them, the net grows thinner.
So, where do we go from here? They’ve been more active than ever on Instagram this weekend, as they should be, because performing overseas is a huge deal for them in terms of promotion. I guess the folks who like it here on Tumblr will stay here, and the rest of us who were only sticking to Tumblr because we liked the level of fan engagement will have to figure it out for ourselves.

They couldn’t even be goddesses...sheesh.
When Harry Potter⚡️ is back in bookstores
This looks like a stack of books, but it’s really for holding cookies. Sneaky.
This 1906 British biscuit (aka cookie) tin protected treats for travelers on bumpy roads, but also proved to be a valuable marketing tool for the company.
This one tin speaks volumes about turn-of-the-century manufacturing, packaging design, rail and steamship travel, and the British Empire. And now it’s in our design museum, @cooperhewitt.

Hey
Still alive, still looking for something new to set me on fire. How bout that new SPG album eh? I miss the fan community. Harry Potter rage is pretty fun to read in the tags tho, especially as a total outsider.

Hi Tumblr
It's been a while. I had to take a big break from tumblr because tumblr's mobile app eats my phone's data like Cookie Monster in a Chips Ahoy factory. The Thrilling Adventure Hour ended and with it went the spark that kept me interested in posting things. I was in a really ugly place for a while after Dex died and I nearly had a nervous breakdown at the end of January because work and life had become so shitty. Not to the point of suicide but more like complete and total apathy peppered with random bursting into tears at inappropriate times. Like I said: ugly. Things are better now. I was prescribed Zoloft. I got a raise and I have a book coming out in September. I even adopted a new cat last Friday. We named him Charmander Ozai because he's a flame point Siamese (and Lord of the Fire Nation). I'm still here. I need a new spark. I love you. Mary

Everything about this is amazing and I totally demand to sit down right now and listen to a whole album of late-60's stripper music performed by the Boston Baked Beans.
Like if you’ve heard of bay leaves. Reblog if you know what they’re used for.
I once had a grown up neighbor who had never heard of such a thing in his life and I’m wondering if that’s as rare as I thought it was then.
I had a bay tree in my backyard growing up. The woods around me were full of them. I was absolutely horrified to see that you can buy them in a store for like 8 bucks a bottle when you can just, like, grab some off the tree? Then dry them out in your oven for like a day and bam, tasty soup enhancer.
When I was little my older sister said she had “read” somewhere that the Ohlone people stuck rolled-up bay leaves up their noses to clear their sinuses. So she and I would dare each other to stick bay leaves up our noses and whoever could stand the burning for the longest won (I usually won).
So yes, I am intimately acquainted with bay leaves.

Jenny Jones “Makeover my outrageous teen” 1995
I used to watch Jenny Jones, Ricky Lake and Jerry Springer every day when I got home from school.
Sunnie Benjamin in the bottom right corner was way ahead of her time.
I still wonder what happened to these people.
