A (Hopefully) Temporary Ending
It's been nearly 2 years since the last time I played or posted anything new for the Mizrahi's and since then my laptop has officially kicked the bucket. I've been working to transfer everything from Twitter over the last few weeks before throwing it in the trash with no current plan to replace it.
I have been playing sims in some way or another since I was 12 and don't intend to stop now (I still have a PS4) but the Mizrahi's are on an official, potentially permanent hiatus. While I was able to back up my saves onto a flashdrive there's no guarantee that it will be recoverable when I do have a PC again. I currently have the determination to recreate my Sims if needed because I love this family and have a whole alphabet of stories left to tell but as I said it could be awhile before I get there (and everyone might look a bit different).
All this said I wanted to give what I hope can be a satisfying ending to the current storyline to those who have followed me over all these years. Some of you have been waiting over 2 years to find out who Ember's father is and I figure I can give you all at least that. So without further ado I give you "My Gen 6 Brain Dump" aka my excited ramblings to @pamsimmer 😆
For starters this house is my first ever build that I did from scratch and is based on the house I grew up in. If I have to recreate it, it will likely not look like this. The back entrance is an apartment that Shane lives in and the rest of the house is where Marie and the Mulligan's live. During Marie's second decade the Mulligan's will sell the ranch to the agent we saw in the flashfoward in 1990 but we'll come back to that.
As we've already seen Marie is a girl who gets around. Her parents and grandparents could hardly keep up with her high school boyfriends and the only reason the name Paul sticks is because he was the current one during that fateful prom. During her actual storyline she will have 4 men vying for her attention. 2 of them we have already met. Shane is the classic cowboy helping her achieve her dream of competing and the first step to helping her heal. He's the kind of man who always sees their relationship as further along then she does and they end up "kind of" engaged by the turn of the century but she'd eventually leave him at the altar.
Despite saying yes to Shane, Marie's heart is also pulled in the direction of Dyami Grove, the younger brother of Juniper. Since she never fully commits to Shane, she doesn't see her flirtations with Dyami as a problem and he's the one who shows her the true heart of Chestnut Ridge. Even more importantly his knowledge of gemology and his sister's connection to the spirits allows Marie to have contact with the Forever Save allowing her to find closure.
I created both these guys when Marie was still a child with no idea which one she would end up with. I figured when she hit YA I would see who she was most compatible with. By the time she was a teen I was leaning more towards Dyami as I thought Shane would be too soft for her. I initially didn't intend to make a decision at all until I got to the year 2000 and rolled everyone's adult trait but once Marie rolled Cruel as her YA trait it became very clear that only one of the guys would be capable of putting her in her place...
Major Blanton is kind of a joke as far as a relationship goes. He's super interested in Marie but she's not at all interested in him. He's just kind of obnoxious. Him and his father are interested in gemology for their own dark reasons. He reminds Marie a lot of Paul and the night of prom. Ironically he's also the one responsible for the fire that ultimately triggers her memories of what happened the night of the accident.
We've already seen in the flashfoward that by 2001 Major Blanton will be in a political position and setting up something called OMI (Online Mapping Initiative). This is something his mother Rowan has been working toward for generations. Rowan worked as a double agent for both the HCR and OSS but was ultimately working on her own agenda for her people...the Omi-scans. While this history won't be brought out until the 2030's (Ember's child's story), the connection between the Salvadoradan's and Omiscans runs deep...that is to say Esteban has some alien in his blood which is why the Salvadoradan fruit effected him differently.
As for Alora and Atlas...they are toxic. Alora is infatuated and Atlas is manipulative. She'll spend some time in Chestnut Ridge to try to get over Atlas but like any good "love bomb" Atlas will come after her and try to get her back. She would end up having a kid with him but being Hot-Headed, Atlas would not be good to her and she'd likely have to be pulled out of a bad situation. I'd eventually like her to end up with Shane as I'd really love him to be on the family tree but he deserves better than Marie.
Alright now let's get into the memories...there are multiple moments (like this one) where Marie talks about seeing Paul and it's written as if he is also the father of Ember. As we now know, he's not. Both times she remembers the father are moments that Paul was also there. She remembers seeing Paul (who she was dating) and the father (who she was becoming attracted to). When she remembers the night of prom she remembers woohooing and Paul walking in on them. Toby is the only one who knew the full truth as Paul was wasted and didn't remember anything and the other has no idea he's a father.
In the scene where Marie is remembering the accident both Nik and the Doctor become concerned when she relays her memories and the doctor says her brain is mixing things up. This is because she is actually remembering the night of prom. When she tells them what they were wearing, Nik immediately knows it's the wrong memory. The night of the actual accident they were driving closer to the water near the Prescott mansion. Both nights a fox ran across the road but the second time she swerved to avoid it and hit another car.
I had tons of fun creating the High School cast for Marie's flashbacks. I even used Ember's genetics to create Paul to maybe throw people off. Interestingly when I was creating this first scene of Paul and Marie, Paul kept picking weird woohoo animations even when I prompted them to do other things so I came up with the idea of him being gay and not realizing it yet. The two of them never ended up woohooing and he was so nervous during prom that he drank too much. It turned Marie off and she ended up in the bathroom with someone else.
Marie's two besties were Lacey Prescott and Opal Chaing (who I later changed to Mei). Lacey was the one responsible for setting the events in motion that would eventually lead to Ember. It started with a dare, a phone call and a certain someone agreeing to go to prom with Lacey. Someone who wouldn't have come otherwise. Everything started to deteriorate from there...Dudley agreed to come to prom, a game of Spin the Bottle led to their first kiss which eventually led to a drunken encounter in the bathtub and a baby on the way.
After prom and finding out she was pregnant something strange started to happen that Juniper Grove would later explain to her as a "connection to the string that holds the worlds together" Shane would call it superstitious but it was something that started when she was just a child and was given an ancient Omiscan Treasure as a gift from her Uncle Esteban (who she always knew was gay). What seemed like a harmless necklace summoned what the Omiscans once called a Mystwalker...a fox that Juniper calls a familiar. Marie sees this fox multiple times while in Copperdale and it eventually leads to the accident. After meeting Dyami and Juniper she learns that this fox (Sheba) can help her speak with those departed to the Forever Save and she is able to find closure and a reconnection to nature.
This brings us to the midway point of Marie's story and into the 2000's. Dudley as we know went off to Del Sol Valley on a scholarship provided by his biological mother. There he eventually got a recording deal and became famous Ranch Music Singer Johnny Zest. By 2001 Marie has gone through an entire decade of running around Chestnut Ridge with her now teenage daughter in tow, left Shane at the alter, reconnected with nature, and begun the process of forgiving herself. Meanwhile Johnny has become incredibly famous.
Then tragedy hits when an attack on the Alto Towers brings a sudden end to his career. As we learn in the flash forward there is something that he and his agent don't want people to know...at least not yet. The secret is that while pulling people out of a burning car an explosion leaves him blind. While ultimately Johnny is a hero his secret is one that will pull him into a spotlight he's not ready for as he's still processing the loss himself and the World of Del Sol is still reeling from the attacks. In an attempt to get his feet back under him and determine what to do about his career, he ends up purchasing the Mulligan Ranch and moving to Chestnut Ridge. By this time Shane is out of the picture and Marie and Ember have moved into the Ranch Hands apartment making Johnny her new landlord.
At first Marie avoids him due to his fame and just her own general bad attitude but when they finally do encounter each other she avoids him for other reasons. Eventually he learns that his tenant is Marie and he meets Ember but since he can't see her he has no idea he's the father. Marie does her best to keep Ember away from Johnny but Ember is star-crossed (how this would look exactly would depend on her traits).
Despite trying to keep Johnny far away from Ember, Johnny still holds the key to Marie’s heart and helps her start to find her way back from her new identity as “Kylan” back to the passionate girl “Marie” that he once knew. At some point Johnny asks Marie to describe Ember to him and she describes her as having her father's eyes, later (after lots of other hints are dropped) someone would mention that Ember has blue eyes with a gold ring effectively describing Johnny's eyes not Paul's and it would all come together for him.
Over the course of the second decade (while navigating Johnny drama) Marie would also get pulled into Major Blanson's schemes and have some direct impact on helping aliens get into government though she wouldn't fully understand the scale of what she is doing. Eventually of course she'd give into Johnny and they'd have a Chestnut wedding. He'd move there to live a quiet life and maybe become a comedian.
All this of course becoming the backstory for the next gen where we have our country girl in the big city. I already have so many plans for Ember including who she would marry and many of her friends (some TS2 throwbacks) she'd be my first university and fame sim and there would continue to be some background moves by Blanson including a pandemic and the disappearance of Bella Goth to officially close out the decades challenge followed by three transitional generations before connecting it to the Disney Princess Challenge and heading full steam ahead into occult lore. So as you can see there is still much of the Mizrahi's story to tell and I fully intend to do so one way or another.
For now I hope this is a satisfying close to this beloved story until we can see each other again. In the meantime I will still be playing the Bellefleur Legacy as well as my Tate save on PS4 and while they won't be as detailed as what I can do on a PC I'm sure it will have it's own twists and drama.
1993 Pt2 - Seeing Stars
Ember was singing softly to herself as she walked down the street with her mom and Shane. Shane chuckled as she did a little skip remeniscent of the dance he'd been teaching Kylan a couple days before.
"Stop that Em." Kylan snapped and yanked Ember from Shane's grip.
Marie tried a little spin and Marie picked her up in annoyance.
Shane took her hand and pressed in close. "Don't be such a spoil sport. She's excited."
"Look mommy horsie!"
"You see horses every day, Ember."
Shane pressed a kiss to her cheek. "Ewww."
"Then don't look."
Shane sighed "I'll take Ember for some cocoa. Try not to be nervous."
"I'm not nervous."
Shane cocked an eyebrow as Sienna rode up. "You must be Kylan. Shane says you're looking for a horse."
"I want to compete and the Mulligan horses are too old."
Sienna frowned, "Follow me"
Kylan was instantly drawn to the Fox Trotter "That ones not ready. We have others."
"He doesn't like being in chains."
Marie barely glanced at the stranger. "They aren't chains."
"I brought him here to heal not be a circus clown."
"Competing is a far cry from a clown."
Kylan turned to confront the stranger but he cried out "Look out!"
It happened so fast, one minute Fable had been nuzzling her hand the next he was kicking and whinnying angrily at her. Kylan dodged as the horse kicked and tumbled to the ground.
The man raced to her side.
"Are you alright." The man was kneeling over her, his eyes locking with her in worry.
"I'm fine. He didn't hit me, just knocked me off balance." The man didn't look convinced as he pressed his hand to her temple. "I guess the world is kind of spinning."
"I'll help you.
The man pulled her into his lap his, hands resting on her face. They were soft and he smelled comforting like dirt and smoke. She tried to get up and he stumbled back.
"Careful. Wait until you get your bearings." He stroked her hair and it felt so nice.
"Kylan?"
Marie jumped to her feet when she heard Shane. "It's not what it looked like. He...I...the horse..."
"The horse knocked her over. I was just making sure she was okay."
"By running your hands through her hair."
Suddenly Sienna, was between them. "Enough of this!"
"He's the one who can't keep his hands to himself."
"How many times have I told you boys to keep your feud out of my ring."
"Shane please. Let's just go."
"And you! I told you that horse wasn't fit for riding but you thought you knew better."
"I'm sorry"
"Get out of my ring"
Shane turned away. "Shane please. I promise it's not what it looked like."
"Then why are you so defensive about it. I'm not forcing you to stay with me Kylan. I like you but a girl like you will always be drawn to what's new." He turned.
She'd messed it all up again.
[Prescott Square 2 months after Prom]
"There you guys are! Lacey! Paul and Marie are here!"
The party was already in full swing as the couple slipped through the door to shouts of greeting. Like they were royalty. She guessed they were considering they'd been crowned at prom.
"Simon didn't think you guys were gonna make it."
"It was a close call. Can you believe this one didn't want to come to a party!?"
"No way! Marie are you crazy. We can't have a party without all the Amiga's. Who would light the bonfire!?"
"I just...haven't been feeling well."
"Uh oh here comes trouble. Maybe don't tell you you weren't gonna come. She's already pissed you were late."
"Thank the Watcher you're here. Zachary invited some of his rowdy Uni friends and there is no way I'm putting him in a headlock in this dress."
"I'll take care of him."
As the night got more rowdy, Marie slipped off to a back corner where Paul found her. "Here. You're favorite."
"Oh...thanks" She placed the drink in her lap without tasting it.
"Something's up. You've been off since prom. Is it because I got wasted? I know I ruined the evening"
"You didn't ruin the evening Paul. I...do you remember anything?"
"Not really. I was nervous. Everyone hooks up that night and we'd never...I wanted it to be special but..."
"I know. I shouldn't have put that pressure on you. Just because I have doesn't mean...I'm sorry."
"So was I good at least?"
Marie swallowed and planted a kiss on his cheek. "Paul, can we go somewhere more private."
Paul smirked, a glimmer of lust in his eyes and he pulled her into a kiss. "Mmm you wanna try again sober?"
"No, I...have something to tell you."
No one seemed to notice when Paul and Marie slipped around the side of the house.
Not even Toby as he mulled over Marie's words at prom. "Mei's literally only with him cause Simon's got a big dong and knows how to use it. Heck if I got the chance I'd be all over that too."
He'd thought she was just trying to make him feel better. Assuring him that their relationship wouldn't last and he had a chance. Then he'd walked into that bathroom and learned just what kind of girl his niece was.
"Toby! Toby! Come quick! It's Marie!"
So Paul now knew too.
"What do you mean it's not mine!?"
"Hey Paul, backoff."
"Get out of here squirt this is between me and your niece."
Lacey pulled Marie away from the boys while Toby tried to calm Paul down but Paul was beyond calming.
"Both of you mind your own business. Whose is it Marie?"
"Get off me Paul. I don't care what this is about. I'm Lacey Prescott and you have overstayed your welcome!"
Marie was no longer listening. A fox with strange markings watched from across the street. The same fox she'd almost hit on prom night. It disappeared into the brush
A (Hopefully) Temporary Ending
1993 Pt1 - A Real Date
It was a crisp winter morning but Chestnut Ridge wasn't known for the cold. Even Ember only needed a light sweater on the coldest days.
That morning she was dancing with a butterfly while the adults cared for the horses when a pickup truck pulled up and a visitor got out.
Ember's butterfly friend fluttered from her hand and landed on her nose.
The visitor chuckled. "It must think you're a flower."
Ember gasped when she saw who'd arrived. "AUNTIE LOR!"
Alora fell to the ground as Ember tumbled into her arms, tears welling up in her eyes.
"And you didn't think she'd remember you. It hasn't even been a year."
"That's like a lifetime when you're 4. Oh and this must be Shane."
"Mr Shane, Auntie Lor's here."
"I see that Little Fish."
"Fish?" Alora frowned at the name. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Shane chuckled, "Em here swims better than me." He chucked her nose, "it's fitting."
"Oh I..."
"You thought you knew better but this isn't San Seq sis. You want to stay, keep your opinions to yourself."
Shane chuckled, "She's just nervous cause we have a date tonight."
Shane was right, Kylan Marie was beyond nervous. Emma Mulligan had helped her bleach her mom's old dress and she spent an hour deciding on the boots.
She hadn't worn makeup since prom... A shiver ran through her...no she wasn't thinking about that night. Tonight was about Shane.
Sometimes when she closed her eyes she could still see Paul's face...
Loud music and pulsing lights, hands in her hair...stumbling into the bathroom...
her eyes locking with Paul's juiced gaze for just a moment...that look in his eyes...
before hands had lifted her to the counter
"Wow you look amazing." Alora's voice pulled her from her memories. "Can I help?"
Marie sighed and nodded. "I can't believe dad let you pierce your nose."
"He let you get a tattoo"
"I was a YA."
"So am I...We can't live in HS forever Marie. Eventually we all have to grow up"
"Wow you look..." Shane's eyes drifted over her.
Marie smirked "My dad couldn't take his eyes off my mom in this dress either"
"Stellar! That's the word I was looking for." He slowly dragged his eyes to meet hers and she cocked an eyebrow at him. "I'm trying to be a gentleman"
It was raining by the time they made it to the Oak Barrel Nectary in New Appaloosa. A waitress sat them and Shane went to hang their coats.
Marie took a deep breath. She hated that Alora was right but it was time to leave the past behind.
"What you thinking about?"
"Just...us..."
"Oh yeah? I like the sound of that." He leaned down and captured her lips with his. It had become so natural over the last few months. More natural then it had ever been with Paul. "I got you something."
"Shane! It's beautiful!"
"Pure just like you."
She smirked and brushed the rose against her lips seductively. He shook his head. "Don't get any ideas. I don't play all my cards on the first date."
"You knew what kind of woman I was when you met me"
"Having a kid means you're guarded not easy...even if you don't know it yet"
Shane was a natural at keeping a conversation going and quickly put Marie at ease even without the bottle of nectar shared between them. "Would you like to head upstairs?"
"I thought you didn't play all your cards on the first date."
"It's the nectary, hardly my bedroom."
The nectar was starting to go to Marie's head and she pressed her knees against his as she leaned forward. "Enough small talk, tell me something you've never told anyone else."
Shane laughed, "Okay...when I was a kid, I dreamt of building a spaceship and meeting aliens."
"Aliens?"
"Yep. Did you know they can blend in with humans so we wouldn't even know they're here."
"You're messing with me."
"Mostly yeah. I did want to build a rocket. I loved all that space stuff growing up. But aliens?" He shrugged.
A shadow fell. "Uh oh, what'd I say?"
"I..."
"I know someone hurt you Kylan. You've been comparing me to him all night."
"I'm not what you think I am Shane...You have this idea that I'm some kind of wounded mouse...I'm not the mouse...I'm the hawk that delivered it to Grim."
[Copperdale 2 weeks after prom]
"I knew I'd find you out here...hello earth to Marie. Are you crying?"
Marie wiped her face. "No...shut up."
"What are you doing out here, everyone's inside. Lacey's trying to get everyone to play Spin the Bottle."
"I'll pass.”
"Ok now I know there's something wrong. You never pass up Spin the Bottle."
"I'm late Toby..."
"laaate..." She waited as he processed the word "Oh Watcher!"
"Yeah. I mean maybe it's just stress..."
"Are you gonna tell him, if you are..."
"No way!"
"I think you need this."
"Why wouldn't you tell him?"
"He was so juiced Toby, I just left him in the tub and he never brought it up. I don't think he even remembers."
"But he should know."
"He just got that scholarship. He has a future. I can't take that from him."
"What about your future?"
Marie didn't respond as she took a drag of the cigarette and sputtered "Ugh, how do you and Simon smoke this stuff?"
"Don't change the subject"
"I plumbed everything up, Toby. You know that more than anyone. What I did...if Paul finds out I'm pregnant..."
"Yeah he'll hate you"
"Thanks for that."
"Who cares what Paul thinks. You know how I feel about him. But...if I were gonna be a father...I'd want to know."
"You'd give up acting?"
"I wouldn't want to leave a child fatherless and I know he'd feel the same way."
"That's what I'm afraid of."
1993 Pt2 - Seeing Stars
1992 Pt2 - Fighting Fears
Marie and Ember fell into a steady rhythm. It felt good to get her hands dirty on the Mulligan's Ranch. To be in the Great Outdoors rather than the suffocation of the suburbs.
And there was something about Shane's easy way that had him invading her dreams far too often
Shane seemed to recognize her discomfort and gave her space which unnerved her even more. He was a stranger...he shouldn't understand her so well.
One morning she slipped into the pasture once Shane had taken Salsa out and Gold Rush nuzzled against her as if she understood.
The horse already knew Marie's darkest secrets and that morning she had a new pain to share. She was so lost in the moment that she didn't notice Shane as he leaned against the fence. Not until she'd climbed onto Gold's back.
"Impressive."
"Enjoying the view?" She scowled back.
He chuckled nervously and hopped the fence while she tried to look more at ease then she felt.
"Not that." He said gently as she hugged Gold's neck. "I'm impressed that she let you on. No ones succeeded since Ash."
"Maybe they're the problem, not her."
"Hmm...she trusts you."
Shane stepped back and she noticed the way he swallowed as his eyes drifted safely toward Ember. "You been to Galloping Gulch yet?"
"No."
"You're missing out. Goldie could use some real exercise what'd'ya say we saddle up and take a ride."
"Ember-"
"Can come with of course."
"Here." Shane gave her a boost as she held Ember steady. Then looked at Ember seriously. "This here's a dangerous animal, young lady. She'll take good care of you provided you take care of her. Understand?"
Ember nodded wide eyed.
"Take a couple passes then we'll saddle up.
They rode up to the gulch to a lake tucked away on the side of the mountain.
"I'll stay here." Marie said casually. "I don't want to get my hair wet." Shane cocked an eyebrow at her but didn't argue as he followed Ember to the edge of the water.
"You know how to swim?"
"No."
Shane took her hand as he led her into the water talking the whole way. "Water is very dangerous just like the horses, you gotta learn to respect it. Can you do that?"
Ember nodded.
"Okay, I'm gonna teach you to swim then we can play when I know you can handle it."
So that's what Shane did. For the next hour Shane taught Ember how to handle her weight in the calm waters, how to find the surface, how to breathe.
Only then did he let her jump and play and splash until she'd exhausted herself and he had to drag her to shore.
"Your turn."
Marie turned pale.
"Come on Kylan, you didn't come all this way to sit on the shore."
"Maybe I did."
"Don't be scared."
"I'm not scared." She quipped defensively. He just smirked and she finally took his hand. Her heart hammered as his hands settled on her hips
"Do you trust me."
She hestitated, looking up into those kind brown eyes, his strong hands steadying her and telling her she was safe. She nodded.
"Then lay back. Let the water hold you."
She closed her eyes, letting his voice wash over her like a gentle caress.
Rain...fire...blood...Toby facedown on the shore...she flailed and Shane tightened his grip on her "Easy! I gotcha, I gotcha."
Her heart was beating wildly but it was no longer from that memory. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be. Look, you can still touch. You won't drown."
"Okay."
Soon they were both floating enjoying the last of the warm weather Chestnut had to offer, the waterfall creating gentle ripples that lulled them.
She panicked everytime he removed his arm so he stayed close. A deep sadness and fear hung over her and he longed to take it away.
As the afternoon went on Marie became more comfortable in the water and after a short nap on the beach Ember was content to play in the shallows.
"Come on show me what you got." He teased avoiding her grasp. She launched for him, wrapping her arms around him and he swallowed.
"Kylan...I think I might be falling for you."
"Oh?"
"I know you have a kid and a past you don't want to talk about but...I want to...be the shoulder you lean on."
"You don't know what your saying."
"I'm serious. I want to know you...the real you. If you'll let me."
Kylan panicked when she realized she couldn't touch the bottom. Shane steadied her again. "I've got you."
He kissed her forehead. She hated it. She wrapped her hand around his neck and pulled him into a real kiss, his fingers on her face filling her with...something.
That night she couldn't sleep. Shane had been a good distraction from her mother's news the day before: Grandpa Nikolas was gone. Taken by Grim in the middle of the night and she was too far away to go home.
She had told him things she had never told anyone else...except Toby.
The radio was on as she made her way down the stairs. A sad Ranch song was playing and there was something strangely comforting about the man's voice filling the room.
"Couldn't sleep?" Shane gave her a juiced grin. She shook her head. "Have a drink with me?"
"Okay."
Shane brought her a glass and sat next to her. An awkward silence filled the room "Hope you don't mind Ranch music."
"No, I like this. Who is it?"
"Johnny Zest I think."
"Never heard of him"
"Some new artist. All the girls love him. He's okay I guess"
"He has a nice voice"
Shane wrapped his arm around her and she smiled, "That smile...wow."
She blushed and he kissed her forehead. She didn't hate it as much as before.
"I was serious what I said...about needing to talk..."
"Thanks...for the juice." She stood. "Goodnight"
Grandpa had said that once.
1993 Pt1 - A Real Date
1992 Pt1 - Starting Fresh
Winter was creeping in slowly as it did in San Sequoia when the Mizrahi family made their way to the station in Gilbert Gardens. Once Marie had made the decision to leave she wasted no time in making her plans to go to Chestnut Ridge.
"Come on I'll miss my train."
"Slow down baby there's still time.
Behind them, Alora dragged behind with the stroller. "Chu chu!" Ember was excited at the giant machine in front of them.
"That's right, it's a train." Alora scooped her niece up for a closer look. "You and mommy are gonna ride it."
Marie scanned the signs for her stop and halted when a weight fell on her bag. She looked down to see Ember clinging to the suitcase. "Weeee"
"Ember, it's not a toy. Get off."
"Marie, calm down you're not gonna miss your train and she's not gonna hurt anything."
"Oh you think that's funny do you!" Ajax scooped her up and tossed her on his back. "How's this for funny!" Ember giggled loving any excuse for a good laugh.
Alora followed her mother to the vending machines. "This isn't fair. She doesn't even like Ember."
"She'll learn to."
Finally it was time to say goodbye. Kyle pulled his granddaughter into a big kiss. "Bye bye baby girl. Just know Papa's always here if you need him."
Ava was next and Alora giggled as Ava nuzzled kisses in her ear. "Be a good girl for mommy and ride lots of horses."
The air changed and even Ember could tell that something was happening. Her mother looked down on her with that stern face. "Come on little imp."
She scooped her up and Ember watched as the people she loved most in the world waved goodbye as she got on the big train.
[6 months before the accident]
The room was silent except for the wet sounds of kissing and the shallow breaths of two teens desperate for each other. Marie wasn't sure when her shirt had ended up on the floor nor did she care. All that mattered was the hand drifting up her side
"Paul." She moaned his name softly as his mouth went to her collarbone. Then his arms tightened around her and he lifted her from the dresser tumbling with her onto the bed.
"Damn Marie...you look like a goddess." his hand moved to her breast and she bit her lip expectantly.
She rolled him over before he could get farther, pushing off the shirt she had already unbuttoned and pinning his hands above his head.
"Plumb, you're good at this."
"This isn't my first time."
"Marie, we're home."
"Okay grandma I'll be down when I finish my homework."
"Mmm you're a bad girl."
"Well I am studying anatamy right now. I hope you can work quick."
"Shouldn't be too difficult." She could already feel the truth of that pressing against her.
"Marie!"
"Plumb don't they ever let up?"
"Shit, it's my grandpa. He's coming upstairs."
She climbed off him and shoved him off the bed. Paul groaned as he climbed painfully out the window. "You owe me."
"Okay okay."
"I'm thinking you on your knees..."
"OMW, Paul, I'll do whatever you want just go."
He smirked and climbed down the trellis without another word.
Marie could hear Toby's voice floating in from the living room "And then all of Tredony will know the name of Dacian Landegraab...Um...dang I always forget that line."
"Sounds pretty good to me. Real chilling."
"You think so? Gosh I'm so nervous. Villains are so hard to play."
"Have tickets gone on sale yet? You know your mother and I want to get good seats for your big day."
"Not yet but hey, I was wondering if Trisha can come over after school tomorrow. You know to run lines?"
"She's the one playing Misty Darktide...Dacian's...lover...?"
"Oh Nikolas, it's just lines, of course she can come over. How bout you Marie. We still haven't seen this semesters report card."
"Really. That's odd I must have left it in my locker."
"Well let's hope they've improved from last semester. I'd hate to make you stay home from prom."
It was late when the train pulled into Chestnut Ridge. Ember was exhausted and didn't put up much of a fuss despite the new surroundings.
Prom had changed everything...Toby's words that night still rang in her ears.
"Tell me you at least used a condom."
Downstairs her host was brewing a pot of tea. "I'm sorry we couldn't put out more of the welcome wagon for you."
"Oh it's fine, I'd much prefer tea to fruitcake and a lot of people."
"Well lucky for you not many people come by. Mom was always the connected one in town."
Marie grimaced the last thing she wanted to talk about was Grim but Kennedy just kept going.
"I still have nightmares of it. The way she was just...thrown like that...Dad and Emma took it hard. I wouldn't have been able to keep this place going if not for Shane."
She took a sip and Marie took the opportunity to speak her mind. "I didn't come here for grief counseling."
"Oh...I wasn't trying...I'm sorry I might be a little juiced."
"It's whatever. I'm gonna go for a walk."
"But it's dark and raining out there."
"I won't go far."
Marie slumped against the fence on the edge of the Mulligan's land. She was so lost in her thoughts that she didn't hear the footsteps or see the man climb over the fence until he spoke. "Only a city girl would come cry in the rain while wearing white."
"I'm not crying." "Mhm."
She sprang to her feet angrily and jumped as the man stuck his hand out to her, "Shane Rosenthal."
She hesitated and he laughed, "I don't bite."
She took his hand, "That's a shame."
His eyebrows sprang up in shock and he laughed wryly.
"I'm...Kylan. Kylan Mizrahi."
Shane climbed back over the fence and leaned against it in silence. Marie watched him, a far off look falling over him. She took a deep breath and let the rain wash over her. Wash away what was left of Marie and leave only Kylan.
From across the field a fox watched them.
1992 Pt2 - Fighting Fears
1991 Pt2 - Birthday Blues
It was the morning of Ember's birthday and the family was mostly bustling around getting things clean and cake baked before the guests arrived.
"Ajax you're on baby duty."
"Why me?"
"Cause you're her favorite today."
"But I need to help dad move the tables."
Ajax sighed and resigned himself to babysitter. The Michaelson's showed up and Ember tumbled over. "Oh Watcher!"
"Careful son she's still fragile."
"I didn't do anything she just fell over. Isn't this Alora's job."
"Alora is helping your mom. Come on it's a good life skill"
Ajax sighed and helped Ember to her feet. She looked up at him with those silver eyes. The light catching on that amber ring.
"Hey Alora. Missed you in Chem yesterday."
"I was sick."
"Oh well glad to see you're doing better."
"I don't need your sympathy, Atlas."
"Oh okay...um anything I can help you with Uncle Kyle?"
"I might need some help moving the tables if you don't mind."
"Sure thing."
Suddenly Ember let go of Ajax's hands and took a wobbling step foward. "Guys look! She's walking!"
All eyes flew her direction…
Ember lost her balance and flopped over again.
"She's definitely ready to be a toddler." Kyle grinned and returned to his conversation with Atlas.
Alora finished cleaning up the breakfast dishes with a scowl. Had Atlas really not seen her tears when she left school.
Over the next hour all the guests arrived. It was the first time hosting a party in Hopewell Hills and soon the house was filled with conversation.
"Where're your parents Kyle?"
"My mom is throwing a fit cause we're breaking tradition by not going to the Rec Center."
"Alright I think it's time for this girls big moment. Marie I'm sure you'd like to do the honors."
Marie groaned as she peeled herself off the couch and scooped up Ember. "Alright ya little imp. Let's do this candle-blowing thing."
Ember laughed as the candles danced.
Marie placed her on the ground. "Alright kiddo, let's show them all what you got."
Ember toddled and shook and almost fell over but she managed to take more than the one step she'd taken that morning and made it all the way to her mother's arms.
"That's my big girl!"
As the cake was served, Atlas found Alora on the bench outside. "Are you mad at me?"
Alora huffed sarcastically "Why would I be mad?"
"I don't know you just seem distant."
"I'm fine."
"Great dad says that's girl code for I'm gonna punch you in the face."
"What!?"
"This is a waste of time."
"Oh so now I'm a waste of time?"
"What? Alora, what the reaper is going on with you?"
"Marie told me you're looking for your dad."
"Yeah so?"
"I had to find out through my sister, who found out through your brother. I thought we were friends!"
"So that means you're entitled to the most intimate parts of my life!?"
"I just thought-"
"You thought what Alora?"
Her hand rested on his before she thought better of it. "I thought you wouldn't want to be alone."
"I don't need your support. It's embarrassing."
"Why would it be embarrassing?"
"Cause...I get angry and I don't like when you see me angry"
Alora giggled, "You don't scare me"
He rolled his eyes, "You have a death wish"
"Let's go swing and you can tell me about your search"
"Are you 12?"
"You're 50. It's called balance"
After a little while Alora got bored and started to climb. "What are you doing?"
"The view is better up here."
"Wait I'm coming too."
"Don't rip those nice pants your mom bought you."
"You better not be looking." She blushed and turned away trying to steady her racing heart.
"Hey why are you so far away. Come here."
She swallowed and turned around and he scooted closer, leaning in to whisper in her ear. "If you wanted me to ask you to prom you should've just asked."
"You knew?" He just smirked and leaned in, brushing his lips gently against hers.
While Alora was having her first kiss Nikolas asked Marie to take a walk with him. "How you doing kiddo?"
"I'm fine grandpa. Why does everyone-"
"Hey! Why so defensive?"
She sighed. "I just feel trapped. I shouldn't complain. I have a loving family and I know they care but..."
"It's not what you pictured for yourself."
"No it's not...but...going out there and pursuing my dream when..."
"I know. I haven't told your grandmother this cause I know she relies on my stoic nature but I've been having a bit of a breakdown."
"You?"
"I actually cried Marie."
"No way."
"I've only ever done that one other time."
"When?"
"When I almost screwed up things with your grandmother. She'd just got out of a bad situation and I moved too fast. Almost became what she expected me to be."
"Why are you telling me this?"
Nik chuckled dryly. "There was one other time...I almost broke down."
"When?"
"When we found out about your mother. But I buried it. I knew I needed to be strong for her. For both of them. So I gave in to anger instead. But...families don't grow out of anger."
Marie rolled her eyes and pulled Nik's arm around her. "Is this the part where you tell me to learn from your mistakes and let go of my anger"
"Was it that obvious?"
"I've had a few of these pep talks from Grandma"
"Okay I'll mix it up a bit...want to know how we both healed?"
"I'm listening."
"We ran away."
"You're kidding!"
"Nope. She took your mother and got far away. I ran off to school. We both had to leave the people who loved us to find ourselves. But slowly, surely new life started to grow where once there had been death."
1993 Pt1 - Starting Fresh
1991 Pt1 - The Angel
Kyle knocked on Marie's door and the unlatched door swung open. He could see she was still asleep and her voice drifted to where he stood in the doorway.
She was mumbling but he couldn't figure out anything coherent. "Marie?" he touched her knee.
"Don't Paul."
She jolted awake.
"You okay?"
"Yeah. Just a stupid dream."
"Have you been having them often?"
"No. A couple times since the therapy ended. Not of the accident though.”
"Want to talk about him?"
"I'm tired of talking about it."
"Not Toby...Paul..."
"Crap."
"Baby. I don't know what happened but you can talk to us. Break ups are hard and when there's a baby involved..."
"Please don't dad."
"He should know he's a dad."
"No! That's one thing that can't happen."
"You shouldn't have to do this alone."
"I did this to myself."
Marie rarely remembered her dreams but she remembered the guitar. Her fingers plucking all the wrong chords. Paul's laugh.
"Give it up Marie, you're terrible."
But then she'd looked up and her eyes caught his, the amber ring in his eyes catching the light and he smiled.
"You're plenty loved and we can find you another dad. Just like grandma has."
Ember didn't know what her mother was saying but she smiled at the sound of her mom's voice.
Downstairs Alora was quick to take her off Marie's hands and she didn't protest.
"Hungry little lady?"
Marie poured herself a cup of coffee while Ava made breakfast "Your father says you had a nightmare."
"It wasn't a nightmare. Why does everyone assume I'm having panic attacks and nightmares?"
"Marie you went through a tragic experience."
"Did I now!?"
"Marie..."
"Why are you yelling...and what happened to Ember's face?"
"She's enjoying her ice cream"
"Ice cream for breakfast? You're gonna make her pudgy before she's even a child."
"Ajax!"
"I'm just saying mom it's never too early to start good habits."
"He's right."
"Well fine then if he's so smart, he can feed her."
"Fine I will. How would you like some sweet potato little lady."
"Looks like she likes it."
"Well sooorry for wanting to give her something nice."
"Do you have something you need to say to me."
"Just forget it Marie."
"Where are you going in such a hurry."
"School!"
"Oh okay...did you eat?"
"OMW I'll eat if I want to when I want to, stop trying to control my life!"
"Alora, enough with the attitude. You have plenty of time before school so sit."
Alora scowled but did what she was told.
"Are you really not gonna eat."
"I'm not hungry."
"You should eat something."
"Prom is coming up and Atlas still hasn't asked her."
"Mind your own business Marie. Just because your life is one big boy problem doesn't mean everyone's is."
"Alora that's enough."
Alora slammed out of the house with Ajax not far behind her. She didn't come home after school.
"Dad where's Alora? She was supposed to watch Ember."
"She called to say she was going to the rec center with some friends."
"What friends?"
"I don't know but I can watch Em."
"She told me she'd be here. Mom and I have an appointment"
"Calm down K." "Hard to calm down when this little imp is screaming in my ear."
"She's your daughter and she just wants your attention."
As if on cue Ember cooed and reached for Marie's face. "Ah not the hair."
Ember started wailing again and Kyle chuckled, "And to think you were even worse. Just put her on the floor to play, she'll calm down."
Marie put her down and Ember pushed herself up. "When'd she learn to do that?"
"Couple weeks ago. Not long till she'll be a toddler."
"Yeah.”
"You must be Ava Mizrahi. It's nice to meet you. Don't look so nervous it's not as bad as people make it sound."
Marie scoffed, "Are you nervous mom?"
"A little can you blame me? It's permanent."
"You came for "The Angel."
"Yes. It's a lovely piece."
"It is and I'm sorry."
Ava shook her head and moved to the chair. "I'll go first."
"You're husband knows you're here right?"
"Of course. He encouraged it. When I showed him the article he cried more than I did. Practically insisted."
"Do you want black and white or colored."
"Colored...one of each"
Finally the process was done and Ava stood in front of the mirror.
"What do you think?"
"It's perfect."
"Mom...I didn't know you lost two."
"I...it's a long story."
The artist nodded, "They usually are...my wife lost 7 before we finally had our daughter."
"That's so many."
"Okay your turn." Marie hopped onto the chair confidently. "Not many girls get sword tattoos."
"One of my best friends was going to be a swashbuckling pirate in a play, he..."
"I'm sorry."
Marie shrugged, "The fire's for my daughter, Ember. The eye...it just looked cool."
"Alright you're all done. Go take a look in the mirror."
"Well, Baby what do you think?"
"I look like a total badass."
Ava chuckled. "That's my girl."
"Would you mind if I took a picture for my portfolio? It'd really mean a lot to advertise The Angel"
"Of course."
As they wrapped up the small photoshoot the door burst open "Daddy!"
"Is it 4 already?"
"Yep, Mommy says it's time to wrap up."
"Does she now." He turned toward the sound of heels coming through the door and grinned at his wife. "Darling there's someone I'd like you to meet"
"Ava this is my wife, Anya. The designer of The Angel."
"When I saw Mizrahi on the calendar I had to check for myself. I knew your mother when you were just a baby. I'm sorry for your losses. But as someone on the other side...let this be the first step, for both of you, to forgive yourself."
1991 Pt2 - Birthday Blues
1990 Pt2 - Locked Memories
The sun was already going down and casting the perfect glow across the living room and making it the perfect temperature for Ember and Papa to take a nap.
Ava knelt beside them and brushed her husband's nose. Had it really been so long since he had held Marie like this?
Ember's eyes fluttered open and she grinned when she saw her grandmother. Ava held a finger to her lips, "Don't wake Papa. He had to get up early today."
Kyle's arms tightened around the baby as she moved and eventually he let out a sigh and opened his eyes.
"I can take her."
Kyle held Ember out to her and the light caught the amber ring in her grey eyes. "You okay."
"Yeah. Sometimes her eyes just catch me off guard. I don't know why."
"They're just like Marie's. Sometimes it's a little disconcerting."
"Sometimes they don’t look like hers though."
A few hours later, Kyle came out for a late dinner. "I forgot what it was like having an infant around. I'm exhausted."
"Thanks for getting up early to take Marie to the station so I could get some extra sleep. You hungry? I can heat you up something."
"I am pretty hungry."
Ava tensed as Kyle's hand drifted under her unbuttoned overshirt and grazed over her breast. Her mind flitted over the whereabouts of the children unable to let her relax.
"You...you talked to my dad."
"Yeah the doc agrees. This will be her last session."
"She won't be happy."
Ava's hands tightened on his shirt as he let out a breath in her ear and nibbled on her earlobe
"The doctor was already getting concerned. Said she's pushing herself too hard."
Ava turned in his arms with a sigh. "I don't know how to help her."
"She doesn't want our help."
"Ten...nine...eight...sev......." The disembodied voice faded and Marie felt her pulse spike. "Deep breaths Marie." The voice said "Where are you?"
"I...I'm in the car." Her heart was racing, her hands sweaty where they gripped the wheel."
"Good. What do you see?"
"Marie?"
Toby's voice pulled her away from the voice in her head and her pulse spiked again.
"Are you okay?"
She put her head on the steering wheel. She had to breathe. She had to remember. "10...9...8..." She whispered until her breathing steadied.
She adjusted the mirror again.
"I can't believe you just left him there."
"Oh Watcher, I'm a terrible person! If his mom finds out, I'm dead! Maybe I should go back!"
"And do what exactly? Tell me you at least used a condom."
"Shit."
"Seriously Marie. That's like rule number one."
"It just happened, okay."
"LOOK OUT!"
Marie slammed on the breaks,
"I don't think you hit it. Marie? Marie what is it?"
The steering wheel, hands covered in blood, fire...
"Hello earth to Marie."
No, no she had to focus had to remember. She pulled her hands from the steering wheel. "10...9...8..."
"Seriously Marie. That's like rule number one."
"It just happened, okay."
"Well let's just hope Paul was too blackout drunk to remember...and there aren't any other surprises. LOOK OUT!"
She slammed on the breaks.
"Well I don't think you hit it. Hello. Earth to Marie!"
The giant computer in the lab lit up as another memory shot across her synapses. "I think she's waking up."
"Already?"
"She must be getting closer to the actual memory."
"That's good right."
"Perhaps...ah...there she is. Not too fast dear give your mind a chance to catch up."
The doc checked a few things on the computer before coming to her side. "How do you feel?"
"Tired, confused...relieved that it's over."
"What did you see?"
"The car of course. We were in Copperdale, leaving a party."
"And Tobias?"
"He was there...he definitely wasn't high."
"And you?"
"I was…distressed. I'd left my boyfriend at a party knock out drunk. Toby was angry about it."
"That you left him?"
"No...that I...um...hadn't acted responsibly"
"I see. Explain to me what you saw. Little things like something you passed or what you were wearing."
"I was wearing a red dress, I think there were flowers in my hair, I saw them in the mirror. Toby was also in red with a vest and that hat he loved so much."
Doctor Bryce frowned and so did Nikolas
"Did I say something wrong?"
"I'm sorry. I don't think I can help you anymore."
"What why?"
"The mind is a delicate thing and it seems it is currently at war with itself. While your conscious mind might be desperate to remember your subconscious refuses to share."
"I am ready. We can keep trying."
"Ignoring your body's warnings can be even more dangerous."
"So we just give up?"
"Pushing you right now could force the conscious mind to create scenarios that didn't happen. Or confuse events like it did today. Which will only hinder your progress."
"You mean I won't be able to tell real from fake anymore."
"It's a possibility."
A few days later back in San Sequoia, Ava found her daughter in her room...as she had been since she'd come home. "I brought you some dinner."
"I'm not hungry. I'm trying to quiet my mind."
"Baby, nothing's gonna happen if you starve yourself. Here I brought some coffee too."
Marie sat up as her mom sat on the edge of the bed.
"I hate to see you like this, K. You're hurting yourself and Ember." "I know I just hate this feeling that I can't trust my own mind. Like there's something inside of me with a mind of it's own telling me to shut up."
Ava climbed onto the bed and Marie leaned against her thinking of that night...Toby's arms crossed angrily. He'd known what she'd done. Angry because he cared. He cared about her, cared about Paul, cared about Lacey.
A rabbit ran across the road and she swerved...or was it a fox.

1990 Pt1 - The Distance Between Them
[TW//T3rr0rism]
[The near future]
“It’s been 24 hours since the attack on San Myshuno leveled Alto Towers leaving devastation in its wake. And filling us all with questions. We now go live to City hall where Senator Blanton is preparing to make a statement.”
"The loss we have experienced here in San Myshuno is devastating. There are no words that can possibly be enough. Though there is still much we do not know, I can say with absolute certainty that these attacks came from Oasis Springs and the organization known as the OSS."
"In an effort to prevent future attacks and protect not just San My but all our beloved Worlds we will be launching the Online Mapping Initiative or OMI which will allow us to track down these monsters and bring them to justice. I will not rest until our Worlds are safe again."
"In the devastation a number of civilians were seen rescuing those still trapped including this unidentified man-"
The TV clicked off. "Seems they still haven't recognized you"
"Only a matter of time. And once they realize...
"It'll lead them to him. I know"
The twangy sound of Ranch music echoed through the room and put Derrick's teeth on edge. "Why are you torturing yourself with this?"
The man didn't answer and Derrick moved to turn it off. The man's fingers twitched as the room went quiet but he made no other movements.
Derrick sighed. "Still nothing on the news but they got a pretty good look at my face."
"Why are you still here Derrick?"
"Your career's not over yet. What you need is to get away from all this for awhile. I bought a house for you far away. Let me deal with the press."
[11 years earlier- Present Day]
The warm water pooled around Ember's waist and filled her with wonder. So many new experiences every day and so many people willing to show her.
Something fell on her face and she looked up in surprise at the woman smiling down on her, then giggled
"Okay munchkin time to get serious." Ember's smile faded at her aunt's tone.
Alora produced a rubber ducky giving it a little squeek and Ember didn't know if she was supposed to laugh until Alora spoke in a silly voice.
"There's nothing more serious then bathtime."
Ember played while Alora busied herself with scrubbing her down. It was easy to empty her mind when she was with Ember and not think about...Atlas...nope nope she wasn't gonna think of that no-good, hot-headed...gorgeous...
Ember splashed and Alora realized the water was cold.
"Okay Munchkin. All done. Can't have you catching a cold."
"Eeeee" Ember squeeled as Alora pulled her from the water.
"What do you think Em? Should Auntie Lor just move on? I'm not pretty like your mommy. Guys aren't flocking to be with me. A guy like Atlas will never like me."
Alora took Ember to her playmat and laid her on her stomach. Ember did not like that nearly as much as bathtime.
"Oh look it's mean Auntie Lor."
"At least I'm not ignoring her."
Suddenly Ember stopped crying and realized that her face was much closer to her favorite hedgehog.
"That's it Em. Look how big the world is."
Marie scoffed, "So excited for nothing. Congrats little imp you can lift your own melon."
"If you don't have something nice to say, you can go away."
"Relax it's not like she understands what I'm saying. Just look how happy she is."
Ember tried to reach for the hedgehog and lost her balance. Marie scowled and grabbed a clean bottle from the counter. The pumped milk and Ember's silver eyes were about the only evidence that Marie was actually her mother.
"bir bir bir" Ember babbled.
"That's right munchkin"
One night the phone rang. "Hey Dudley."
"Hey sorry I haven't called recently. Things have just been really busy with school. I think I found an agent."
"That's amazing Duds. Can't wait to hear your first album."
"I'll send you an autographed copy. Somewhere in Chestnut right?"
"Yeah...maybe."
"What do you mean? That's your dream!"
"A lot's happened."
"My mom told me about the accident...and the baby." Marie swallowed. "Does your boyfriend know?"
"Paul? No we broke up...he never even reached out."
"I'm sorry, K."
"Don't be. He was just a dumb boy"
In the other room Ava pulled Kyle away from the door where they had been listening in on the conversation. “Paul.” Ava mouthed and Kyle nodded.
They heard Marie’s footsteps in the kitchen as she opened the fridge and Kyle kissed Ava so suddenly she let out a moan.
"Gross!" Marie shouted.
Once the coast was clear they climbed into bed. Do you remember her talking about a Paul?”
“She talked about a lot of guys. I’m sure Paul was one of them.”
“Do you think we should find him. He should know he’s a father right?”
“I don’t think that’s our business.”
Ava looked up at her husband. “She’s so broken Kyle. Did you hear her voice when she talked about his album?”
“Like she couldn’t really be happy for him.”
“When was the last time you saw her hold Ember.”
“Not since her birthday. Hey I have a thought and you’re gonna hate it.”
Ava climbed off him and lay down. “Why?”
“Actually maybe you won’t…but I hate it.”
“What is it Kyle?”
“I think…we should kick her out.”
“What?”
“I know I hate it but not like in a mean way just like push out the door you know.”
“But why?”
“Because we can’t help her. And neither can that doctor your dad has her seeing.”
“But I’m her mother.”
“Of course you are. But she’s always needed to figure this things out for herself and being here…she’s just hiding.”
“Okay…but it’ll have to be her idea or it won’t work.”
1990 Pt2 - Locked Memories
1989 Pt2 - Mizrahi's Are Forever
It was late one night when Kyle whispered Ava's name and brushed the hair from her face.
"Kyle? Baby what is it?"
"I can't sleep."
"Are you having a craving?
"Yeah...but it's not that bad...I just can't sleep until I tell you something."
She sat up concerned.
She cupped his face, "What ever it is we'll work through it."
"It's nothing like that." She traced the scruff of his jaw and he pulled her hands away to kiss them. "I, Kyle Kyleson take you Ava Mizrahi in sickness and in health, richer and poorer, good times and bad..."
He wrapped his arms around her, "For as long as we both shall live."
"Kyle..."
"I didn't know what these words meant the first time. How bad the bad stuff could be or how easy it is to point fingers and walk away. But you've never given up."
Ava swallowed and didn't speak.
There was a rustle at the door and Ava looked up "Mommy, is daddy okay?"
"Oh Sweetie yes. Sometimes even adults cry but these are good tears. Come here. Daddy needs all the love he can get." Alora and Ajax came closer and wrapped their arms around Kyle. "I, Ava Mizrahi..."
It was a rainy day but Kyle was lying on his back in the mud trying to get the van fixed for their weekend trip to San Myshuno.
Kyle had been keeping busy since graduating the program Ava was proud...but also feeling a bit neglected.
"Oh hey Babe, perfect timing."
Kyle waved her over pointing at the window. "Could you let me know if the light on the dash is turning on."
She peered in the window, "I don't see anything."
"Keep looking. I'm gonna try something else. How bout now?"
"Still nothing. Kyle, maybe we should take it to a...oh."
She grinned "You're teasing me aren't you?"
"The light fuses are under the hood. You didn't think I'd notice those pants did you?"
"I was a little disappointed."
She sat in front of him, "No ma'am, you need to change into something...warmer and I need to finish this car."
San Myshuno was buzzing as usual as the three Gilbertson Heirs made their way to the Humor and Hijinks festival.
"How bout we split boys vs girls and see which is better." Geoffrey teased.
"Only if we get to be the Pranksters." Celeste shot back.
"Hope you're ready to lose."
"I don't know if this is such a good idea. We both know Ava and I can be pretty cutthroat."
"And I can't be?"
"Well I've never seen it...on second thought maybe you should join the jokesters."
"Then it's wouldn't be boys vs girls."
"Okay enough. The boys are already starting"
The competition was on. Kyle and Chris took turns telling jokes and Geoffrey...well he attempted to juggle which was pretty funny.
Ava and Nancy channelled their Rude Introduction skills, while Celeste made use of the hand buzzer. Then all 3 women began tagging the sidewalk
But in the end it was the Jokesters that ended up pulling out ahead and the girls had to admit that maybe they'd lost their hard edge. Laughing they headed to the Bubble Lounge.
"You gonna be okay with this Kyle?"
"This is non-basemental so I should be good. thanks sis."
"So...has everything been figured out."
"Gloria Gilbertson was a brilliant woman. She was dealt a bad hand but she wasn't sloppy with the men she chose. My dad spent his entire lawyer career looking for loopholes. Made Andrew skittish."
"He skipped town."
"So that's it then..."
Geoffrey was exhausted of all the talk of inheritance. His mother's expectations had always been too much pressure and now he was walking into a bigger fortune
"Thought I'd find you out here."
"The fireworks are so pretty."
"Yeah."
"Part of me isn't ready to leave normal life behind"
"Nancy wait!" Celeste jumped up when she realized the Landgraab's were leaving. "I know you're heading out in the morning so I just wanted to make sure you had Dudley's new number."
"What for?"
"In case you...want to call him...see how he's doing...cause you're his mother."
"I think you misunderstood something Celeste. I sent Dudley to his dream school so that I'd never have to see him again. He understands that why can't you?"
"Because I thought we were doing this together. I thought he was your precious Landgraab heir."
"I have Malcolm now."
"Everytime I think you've changed you prove that you're still that mean high school witch. Forget it. Dudley never needed a second mom, he already has two perfectly loving parents. Dudley doesn't need you and he doesn't need the Landgraab's"
"Glad we're in agreement."
Ava suddenly seemed to notice their fighting and headed their way. "Is everything okay over here."
"Everything's just fine. If Nancy wants to act like her father she has that right. Just don't expect me to invite her to Harvestfest dinner. Be her friend if you want. I'm done."
Ava felt shaken by the fight between her friends. She knew Nancy was scared and hated goodbyes but she made a choice about Dudley and Celeste had every right to be angry about it.
"Man I'm tired."
Ava rolled over as Kyle pulled off his shirt and gave him a teasing whistle.
He began untying his shoes as she watched,
"I've been thinking...about the paperwork."
Ava rolled her eyes. "They're never gonna find that form."
"Well what if...we submit a new one...for me?"
"You...want to change your name."
"I don't really want to be a Kyleson anymore."
"Ugh being Mizrahi is miserable."
"Was that a pun. Are you making jokes now?"
"No stop." She slipped away from him running to the end of the bed. "You know I hate that."
Kyle knew when he'd pushed her too far...this wasn't it. He slipped to the edge of the bed.
Her eyes danced
She cupped his face. "Mizrahi's are forever not just till death. Do you think you can handle that?"
"For better or worse."
"Hmm. Kyle Mizrahi...I'm not sure if I like that."
"Shut up you know you love it."
"I don't hate it...but don't think you're taking my job as housewife."

1989 Pt1 - Not in Vain
"Everything okay in here?"
"You don't have to check on me Stefan. I'm fine."
"Sorry, you've just been in here a long time. I got worried."
Esteban reached out a hand to his husband. "You wouldn't be you if you didn't. But really, I've never felt better."
Stefan knelt beside the tub and took Esteban's hand. His eyes watered a bit when Esteban gave his hand a firm squeeze. He kissed him on the forehead to hide his tears. "I'm gonna go start dinner."
"Esteban pulled him into a deep kiss, "Dinner can wait," and then into the tub.
Stefan glared at Esteban "That wasn't funny."
"Then why are you smiling."
"I can't help it."
"Perhaps I should help you out of these wet clothes."
Stefan sighed and stripped, slipping behind Esteban and pulling him close. "How's that?"
Esteban leaned back. "Much better."
"Thank you for sticking with me Stefan. I know it wasn't easy"
"It wasn't. I'm sorry I made it harder. Wait I have something." Stefan slipped from the tub and dashed from the room dripping wet, returning a moment later with two champaigne glasses "I was gonna save it for dinner"
"Are you already drunk?"
Stefan chuckled "Only on you. There's a lot to celebrate. It's been 32 years since we met, you're healthy, and tomorrow we get to share a room at my sister's for the first time. I love you Esteban Beltran"
He didn't even give Esteban a chance to respond
The next day the family gathered in Copperdale once again. Sofia was quite excited that Ember seemed to take a shine to her. "Blue-eyed blonde just like her momma."
"Didn't get the Kyleson chin though."
"Wonder if she got the birthmark from her father."
"Only Marie knows."
Ember was tired from all the excitement and travel so Sofia set up the playpen and told her a story when she started to fuss.
Ava listened quietly remembering all the times she would listen to her mom's stories growing up and how they brought her peace. It seemed Ember agreed.
Soon the family settled down for dinner and after Kyle settled in for a nap beside his granddaughter.
Sofia found Marie in Toby's room. "It looks the same...except the plaque."
"Mrs. Marcella gave it to us. All the kids signed it."
"He was so excited about that play."
"He was."
"He always tried to make everyone laugh but on the stage...he...was different."
"Marie," Sofia grasped her granddaughter's face. "You know it wasn't your fault right."
Marie didn't respond. "I don't blame you and neither should you."
Sofia clutched her head, "Nana?"
"I'm okay. Just a little light-headed. I shouldn't overexert myself. It's just...your mother says you've been struggling to connect with Ember."
"I'm fine Nana."
She sniffled and Sofia pulled away, wiping a tear from her granddaughter's cheek. "You're allowed to mourn him."
Marie sighed in frustration.
"It's easier when there are physical wounds. You can see the progress. Know how far you've come. Emotional wounds take longer and you never quite know when you've healed."
"He saved her you know."
"What?"
"It's the only part I remember."
"You don't have to tell me."
"I don't remember much. I don't remember if he was high or if we were fighting or why I swirved...but when I did...his first instinct was to protect her." She placed her hand over her stomach. "If he hadn't he might be alive...but she..."
"Thank you"
Downstairs Ember was waking up and was hungry. "You sure you got it Papa?"
"Of course baby girl. This isn't my first time and Ember actually seems to like me."
Marie couldn't help but smile as her daughter settled contentedly against her great-grandpa's shoulder.
Esteban was watching with a small smile on his face. "Do you want to hold her?"
"Oh no. I have little experience with babies."
"She'll be taking another nap soon. You can hold her while she sleeps."
"Okay I'll give it a try."
Ember settled into his arms and gave a big yawn.
"Wow Esteban. You're a natural. Why didn't you have kids of your own?"
"Kyle that's a rude question."
"Oh...uh...right...I forgot. Sorry."
"It is okay. I once dreamed of having children of my own but I chose Stefan instead and I do not regret it."
"That's too bad."
"I'm sorry."
"For what, Nae Lee."
"That I couldn't give you kids. It was never an option so we never talked about it but...I had no idea"
"That's what you got out of that conversation? Stefan..." He kissed him "When Ember was placed in my arms, I was accepted into your family"
The sun went down and Kyle and Ava slipped outside for some peace and quiet "Do you feel that, Ava?"
"The cold? Yes, it's freezing out here"
Kyle laughed and pulled her closer, "No, silly." He rocked with her for a moment, letting the quiet of Copperdale settle over them, "Hope"
Later that night Ava and Kyle took the twins to Prescott Square for the evening and everyone else had settled in early. "Something's on your mind."
"Just thinking...about Toby"
"Oh...you talked to Marie?"
"Yes...I don't care what the reports say, he was a hero like his father"
Nikolas didn't say anything so Sofia continued. "I know your police brain can't let go of the evidence but...he was a hero."
"Sofia..."
"Please just let me have this. If getting to the truth is how you need to cope fine but I need to know my son didn't meet Grim in vain."
Nikolas pulled her back to him. "I love you Sofia. I need you to know that."
"I'm tired."
"Okay."
"I love you too. I'm...just trying to get through."
"Yeah...It does make things feel a little better even if...never mind. Good night My Dove."
Even if...it wasn't true...
1989 Pt2 - Mizrahi's Are Forever
1988 Pt2 - The Cure
[Seventeen Years Earlier]
Stefan hummed as he pulled a leaf from a banana tree. If he could just figure out how to grow them at home he could make Esteban fresh banana bread and... "Esteban!"
"I am hungry!"
"How many times have I told you not to eat strange fruit!?"
"Nae Lee, this fruit will satisfy my hunger. I used to eat it often as a young boy."
"But that one...that's the one my brother-in-law used as a poison!"
"It has never hurt me. In fact this one...makes me want to do inappropriate things with you."
Stefan swallowed. "Oh..."
The trees in Wakaba were turning beautiful shades of red and yellow the day that Sofia visited her brother in his home for the first time. The clean design and well-manicured plants was not what Ava had expected of two bachelors...or...not bachelors?
It was all so confusing!
"Glad you could make it Kyle."
"Me too. I'm glad you were able to push the visit back a few weeks so I could finish my session."
"I hope everthing is going well for you. I have been quite worried for you since Stefan gave me the news."
"Oh um thanks."
Silence settled.
Frustration filled Stefan as he watched his family.
Esteban always tried to stay quiet at family gatherings but this was HIS home. He had a right to be part of the conversation and he had been more concerned for Kyle's health since he'd heard the news than his own.
"Stefan this...is really good. Maybe not as good as Ava's she's a Master at cooking but...I'm impressed."
"Next family get-together I'm kicking mom out and you're joining me."
"Thanks...I know it's not the most manly."
"I'll let you know how manly it is after Sofia goes."
"You have any Salvadoradan plants in this collection. I've taken a bit of an interest in plants and I'd love to see them."
Later Nikolas found Kyle outside. "I may be old but I haven't retired yet...why'd you take some of that plant."
"I wasn't trying to hide it."
"Well?"
"I've been trying to find something to distract me. My body aches for everything it can't have so...I've been pouring over that old study you gave me."
"Hence the plant." Nikolas leaned against the wall with a sigh. "What's on your mind, I could use a distraction too."
"Okay, hear me out. I know you gave me those old files cause I picked up some 'silly hobby' but...I have a theory."
"I'm listening."
"This plant. It's native to Salvadorada right? Well I needed to run some tests on our simternet prototype anyway so I sent out some emails..."
A couple weeks later Kyle was led into the lab at Copperdale Police Station. Kyle watched for a moment as the woman mixed the concoction.
"EUREKA!" Finally she turned to them.
"Kyle this is Katlin Gagnon. Her mother Ann is a good friend of Sofia's."
"We're practically family...distantly related in fact."
"And this must be the subjects doctor."
"He's not some test subject he's my patient and I only gave you a blood sample cause my brother begged. So why am I here?"
Kat turned on the screen and a diagram that didn't make sense to Kyle popped on the screen "Is that...?"
"Yep! This is Subject One's genetic imprint, AKA my own, THIS is Subject Two's imprint, AKA your patient's."
"But what's this?"
"This is where it gets interesting. Subject Three is Kyle, Subject Four is another Salvadoradan patient."
"Two and Four match."
"Exactly!"
"What does this mean?"
"I've tested hundreds of samples to be sure. This marker is only found in 5 of those samples. The only thing those samples have in common is being native to Salvadorada."
"So..."
"Watch what happens when I introduce the hormone you've been giving him..."
"So...that drug has been making it worse?"
"Unfortunately yes."
"I told you to get off it! I had such a bad feeling."
"So I'm not sick."
"You are but the approach we've been taking isn't going to fix it. What I saw in that lab...this could work Esteban. You could get better."
"But you're not sure. It's still experimental like the last one. It could make things worse. It could speed things up. I...don't know if I can take anymore."
"I understand. There's still a lot we don't understand. To be honest...I don't think this would work for anyone else."
"Do you want to try Nae Lee?"
"I...don't know. I was just told I was born with a weird genetic anomaly. This seems like the first step to being a test subject."
"Kat is of course intrigued by any info you give her but...this will stay in the family. I understand your concern."
"Explain the plant part again."
"We know from other research that most who eat it meet Grim. New research has shown that this plant reacts differently in Salvadoradan's."
"What would end Stefan, is a drug for me."
"Until hormones from Stefan triggered an HIV-type reaction."
"Your waters getting cold."
"Everyone was right Stefan."
"What?"
"Your family...the way they look at us like we're broken...like they always knew..."
"Stop that. It has nothing to do with us being gay"
"You'd be better off if you just left. I can let them run the tests and-"
"Hey..." Stefan dropped to his knees in front of his husband. "We pledged Utuknae remember. I'm not leaving you...I promise. What we learned today is progress we can figure out how to help you now."
"Your hormones are hurting me."
"Well stop sneaking berries off that damn tree"
"I can't believe you were right. If I'd listened to you..."
"You would have been in so much pain these last few years. But now we can get you healthy again and who knows maybe you'll even outlive me now."
"Absolutely not."
"Fight me on it after you get better okay."
"Yeah."
1989 Pt1 - Not in Vain
1988 Pt1 - The Flame Goes Out
Marie's recovery was slow and frustrating especially with the added stress of being pregnant and the weight of loss hanging over them all. She felt like a stranger even while everything around her was familiar.
"Get comfy sweetie, I'll get dinner started."
Marie sighed as she set the crutches aside. Her mother still hadn't said anything about the baby as if she was pretending it didn't exist. Kyle sat and patted the couch next to him.
"We turned my office into a bedroom for you. I know it's upstairs but you'll have your own space."
Marie laid her head on her dad's shoulder "Mom's mad at me isn't she?"
"No sweetheart, she's just not very good at expressing her feelings. When she's high-strung she pours herself into making sure everyone's cared for. She put a lot of work into planning your favorite meal."
Just as Kyle said Ava had everything arranged so that Marie had an appointment with the local doctor the next morning.
"Looks like the funding's better. This place has really had a glowup."
"Mom I don't need you to hold my hand, I can handle a doctor's appointment by myself."
The doctor brushed in at that moment. "I beg to differ. Company policy says you have to be accompanied by a spouse or parent."
"What? That's a dumb rule."
The nurse shrugged "Just one of those archaic Gilbert Gilbert's rules we're waiting for Doctor Landgraab to overturn."
The nurse powered on the machine and soon a whooshing filled the room. "Is it twins?"
The nurse chuckled, "I've barely started but there's a head. Do you want to know what you're having?"
"You can do that?"
"We always could but policy changes allow it now."
"Yes, tell me."
"It's a girl...Are you okay Ms. Mizrahi."
"I keep expecting something to happen that will make this real but...it's just black and white lines and some whooshing noises."
"You're young, it's okay for this to feel surreal. I can recommend a counselor."
"That's okay."
After dinner that night the twins rushed off to do their homework so they could play outside before dark. "How was your appointment?"
"Fine. It's a girl." Her words fell flat as she hobbled to her feet.
"Your crutches."
"The bathroom is 10 hops away mom."
Kyle gasped suddenly.
"You're showing."
"Oh...um...yeah. I guess this top shows that off." Her stomach fluttered "Here."
She pressed his hand to the spot his granddaughter was moving. Kyle's eyes lit up. She wished she could feel that excited. That connected. She felt nothing.
"Now she needs a name"
But Kylan Marie couldn't name her. How could she name something she'd never seen? Something that was part of her but its own? Time passed and her body healed but her heart didn't. She placed her hands on that last place Toby had touched her before being flung from the car.
Like the remnants of a flame.
An ember
As Marie's time drew closer the pull of the bottle under Kyle's mattress became stronger.
"What's this?"
"The last of my stash. Ava...I messed up."
Two pills rattled in the bottle. "What happened?"
"I want to be strong enough. For you, for our growing family...but...I'm not."
"This is good though. Progress."
"You don't understand Ava. I...think about it all the time. I found a new supplier and...I don't think I can stop on my own."
"What are you saying?"
"I need help Ava. Before I end up..."
"Like my brother."
"Or in jail like mine."
"I can make some calls."
"I already found a place. It lasts a year. Three 3-month sessions with a month in between. I'd miss the birth...and most of her first year. But then I'll be free."
"We'll make it. We've done it before."
"I know. You're the strongest woman I know."
He pulled away suddenly "I have to get to work. We can discuss the details tonight."
She watched him go and when he cast a glance over his shoulder she thought he looked stronger than he ever had before. "Wait!" He paused at the door "I have something for you."
He looked down at the house key. "What is this?" "Bronze for Endurance." He sighed in frustration with himself,
"I missed our Bronze Anniversary."
"Marie needed us. Kyle...no matter what, this is your home. Make the call, go to rehab, get better, but come home."
Finally the day for baby girl's arrival came and finally Marie felt something...pain...excruciating pain. "It's not too late to get an epidural. It did wonders when your siblings were born."
"I'm not getting a plumbing epidural mom. Just shut up will you, I'm trying to breathe"
"Choosing the natural route I see. What a trouper."
"I don't need drugs to shut off my pain."
"Okay Super Woman, it's time to push."
And so she did...for hours. And every hour, every push felt like a penance, a cleansing, a stoking of the fire that was dying within her...
And then that fire went out and all that remained was a memory...an ember of a life that was no longer hers, a child she could no longer be. A voice of hope that she would never hear again. Her mother was crying but she didn't feel anything.
All she had left was Ember.
"She looks like a potato mom."
"So did you. Don't worry, in a couple months she'll start looking more like you...or her father."
"Yeah."
"Will you tell me about him?"
"Who?"
"The father?"
"Nothing to tell. Just a stupid high school boy who didn't know how to use a condom."
Kyle finished his first session shortly after Ember's birth. "There's my little granddaughter. Oh aren't you perfect. I hear mommy did a beautiful job."
"I'm gonna...get a snack...or something."
"Don't worry Em, mommy loves you, she's just struggling to show it right now."
1988 Pt2 - The Cure
1987 Pt2 - The Accident
Kyle woke with a start his eyes scrambling to make sense of his surroundings and settling on the clock. It'd only been 20min since the last time he looked at it.
He felt okay when he was doing things but when he closed his eyes weird dreams plagued him.
"It's just the pills wearing off. You gotta push past this point."
He glanced at his wife sleeping oblivious next to him. He could do it. Another night and it would get easier. But he'd said that last night and it was was harder.
He had to stop thinking of Andrew.
He reached under the mattress and pulled out the bottle. Only 5 left.
He wouldn't buy more but maybe one tonight to help him relax? Then he'd try to go longer before the next one.
He sighed and put them back under the mattress. Just knowing they were there was comfort enough.
The next morning Nancy came to visit. "Oh how's my favorite infant? Come to Auntie Ava."
Nancy handed Malcolm over and Ava cooed over him. "We're moving back to Oasis Springs."
"Wait what?! Hang on let's go upstairs. Marie will be calling soon but I want to hear everything."
"Apparently Geoffrey used his inheritance as a bargaining chip to break off my previous engagement. My dad's been trying to get land here forever and Geoffrey basically gave him Anchorpoint. It gained him a lot of respect and now my dad wants to leave us the company."
"That's amazing!"
"Yeah. There's only one problem."
"What's that?"
"Dudley...my dad still doesn't know about him and I don't want to reveal him and lose everything. Plus the kid is hardly a Landgraab. He wants to attend some music school in Del Sol which I'm happy to provide."
"How does Celeste feel about that?"
"She wants him to follow his dreams and I have the checkbook, she's not complaining. Geoffrey thinks I'm shipping him off cause I don't want to deal with him but it's what he wants. What do you think?"
"I think..."
Just then the phone rang.
Ava scrambled to pick it up. Marie always called after scouts. She'd keep it short today since she had company but she still liked to hear her voice. "Hello. Kyleson residence."
"Ava?" A man's voice met her ear. It was familiar but the tremble set off alarms in her mind.
"Dad?"
Nikolas cleared his throat and it was his steady police voice that greeted her next. "Ava...there's been an accident. We're still trying to figure out what happened but...you and Kyle need to get here as soon as possible."
"Dad...is Marie okay?"
"I don't know baby."
Ava hung up the phone, trying to process the news. Nancy finally seemed to notice that the phone call hadn't been good. "Marie get a bad grade?"
"No Nancy!" She snapped, "Marie is in the hospital. I have to go to Copperdale."
"Oh well...I guess I'll figure out Dudley myself
The sun was shining far too brightly for the shadow that hung over the small Copperdale hospital. "What do you mean you don't know?"
"I'm sorry sir but I'm just the receptionist. The doctor is in surgery that's all I can tell you cause that's all I know."
"I highly doubt that."
"Kyle please. We all want answers." Sofia scolded her son-in-law as she came from the back room.
"Mom!" Sofia embraced her daughter. "Is she okay?"
"One of my men on the scene said Marie had been driving but she swirved. Toby was thrown from the vehicle. They...found drugs."
Nikolas had pulled some strings to get them a more comfortable and private waiting room right outside the OR so they would know the second the doc was out of surgery. The wait was torture.
"I shouldn't have let her stay."
"Don't Ava. We couldn't have known. She wanted to stay."
Finally the doctor arrived and Kyle jumped up to greet him. "Well?"
"She's got some broken bones and she'll be on crutches for a few months but I'm happy to say her and the baby are doing fine."
"Baby?" Ava looked like someone spit in her drink. "What baby?"
"I'm sorry I assumed you knew...Marie is nearing her second trimester. Thankfully for her the impact was mostly on the passenger side of the vehicle."
"Oh." Kyle glanced at his in-laws. "Can we see her?"
"Yes. But she's still waking up so...take it slow. Not too many questions"
Ava rushed to Marie's side and Kyle hung back not wanting to bombard her as soon as she came to. His head was spinning. Pregnant? He was going to be a grandfather? He was only 37! Much too young to have a grandbaby and he was still figuring out his own life.
"Mom?"
Kyle jumped to his feet when he heard his daughter's voice. Tears sprang to Marie's eyes when she saw him and her voice broke. "Dad? I...I really messed up didn't I?"
"Hey don't worry about that right now. We're just glad you...and the baby...are okay."
"You know about that?"
"You're still a minor baby girl."
"You're not mad."
"Well it's not what your mother and I wanted for you this young but no we're not mad."
"I...want to keep it."
Kyle smiled proudly, "Okay baby. We'll figure it out. Just focus on getting better so we can take you home."
Meanwhile, things on the other side of the curtain were not going so well. Sofia knew there would be no recovery even before Nikolas said the words.
"The doctor said we should say our goodbyes."
Sofia fell to her knees and Nikolas pulled her close. There were no words.
Sofia pulled her son's lifeless form to her and Nikolas knew she would need a moment. He needed his own moment. He stumbled from the room. Trying to contain the overwhelming emotion. He gripped the counter and took a steadying breath.
They'd make it through...they always did...
1988 Pt1 - The Flame Goes Out
1987 Pt1 - A History Lesson
"Dad? Are you feeling alright?"
"Just tired dear. I...can feel Grim at the door Come here." Celeste knelt at her father's bedside. "There's something you need to know before I go."
"Don't talk like that."
"Celeste listen. The box on the mantel holds it all."
"A history lesson? What kind of history lesson?"
"I don't know. You and dad have basically been here since this Worlds founding. Maybe just hearing your story will help me figure out what Andrew wants."
"Andrew? Andrew Larimore? Is he here?"
"Mom? Who is he?"
Celeste took a deep breath as she neared the Keepsake box. The key felt like it was burning a hole in her hand. Her father's secrets all the things he'd always said she wasn't ready for.
"What do you think's in there?"
"I don't know. I'm a bit scared to find out."
"So Andrew is trying to buy your computer work?"
"Yeah. Dad thinks I should sell it."
"All the more reason not to! Your father has never been willing to fight for what's properly yours."
"I thought you and dad..."
"What? Loved each other? Don't be such a romantic, Kyle."
A single piece of paper was all the box held. "Well that's a little disappointing."
Celeste was scanning the letter. Her eyes widening as she processed it's contents. "It's a will...Gilbert Gilberts will."
"What does that have to do with you."
"Everything."
[1923 - Henford-on-Bagley]
Gilbert Gilberts blew into the Gnome's Arms Restaurant on a stiff breeze. The fire was roaring and he rubbed his hands together to get warm.
The man behind the counter looked up with a crooked smile and grabbed a towel to dry his hands.
"Can I get you something to drink Gil?"
"Not unless it's something stronger than Sasaparilla?"
David chuckled, "You know we're not that kind of establishment anymore."
"Yeah. Stupid laws. I just...It's too much sometimes you know."
David motioned toward a table.
"You and Mandy fighting again?"
"She attended one of those rallies and now she thinks we're equal she's always nagging me. Even Henford is adopting this modernized thinking."
"Times are changing, Gil. You'd have to find a whole new world if you want things to stay the same"
"Huh, that's an interesting thought...uh oh...here comes trouble."
David grinned, "She's trouble alright but worth every moment." He jumped to his feet and gave his wife a kiss.
"There you are. Hezekiah's throwing a fit can you give him one of your talks?"
"Of course dear."
"Kye your mother says you're being disagreeable."
"Go away! You're not my father."
"Young man, if you want to be treated like an adult you need to show more respect."
"Hey Mr. Mizrahi! Is it okay if Kye and I go up to the Bramblewood to go fishing?"
"Hmm that depends on Kye."
Hezekiah gave a dramatic sigh. "I'm sorry Uncle David...can I please go fishing with Gloria."
David nodded glad that the boy had a friend his age. "Of course but make sure you're back before dark."
"Okay." The two kids rushed off and David returned to find Gil already gone.
[1925 - San Sequoia]
"Dad when are we going back home?"
"This is our home now sweet pea. A blank world for us to shape however we want. We can make our own rules. And others who are like-minded will join us."
"Can I be queen?"
"Only if you marry the king."
[1942 - Brindleton Bay]
"Stop holding back! I told you I can handle it."
Leutenant Mizrahi swung his leg, narrowly missing Gilbert's head then swivelled and kicked him in the gut knocking the wind from him.
The Leutenant reached out his hand. "You sure about that old man?"
The two settled in on a bench to catch their breath and Hezekiah sighed, "Still no letter?"
"No...I told her I wanted to marry her and...nothing. It's been 3 months."
"Eh just forget her. Girl's like Anabelle don't want to wait for 'maybe' weddings"
"That's what I'm afraid of"
Kye drooped and Gil felt bad, "Ignore me man. You know I'm just bitter since I got my 'Dear John.' There are hundreds of girls up this coast that will take your mind off her."
"And end up with a surprise kid? No thank you. I'll take the no news is good news route."
[1945 - San Sequoia]
"Excuse me!? You're leaving everything to some Bay Bastard son. Am I nothing."
"You're an unmarried woman. Perhaps if you had sons of your own..."
"I will."
"Have 3 sons and I'll give THEM San Sequoia."
Fine and I'll do it all without a husband."
So she did.
When Gloria announced her pregnancy Gilbert Gilberts smirked. "It'll be a girl."
But Gloria smashed the ultrasound machine and ate her carrots and soon Geoffrey Geofferson was born...then Michael Michaelson...then, after a night with Evan Chandler a third son came.
"What's this?"
"Your son. This is Kyle Kyleson."
"That's a dumb name."
"Oh um Mrs Chandler...I didn't know you'd be here."
"I know your game Ms. Gilbert's and I want you off my porch."
"Mommy what's that?"
"The stork dropped off a baby brother for you, Jen."
[1965 - San Sequoia]
"So I don't get anything?"
"Calm down Andrew. The stipulations for the will were intense I didn't expect her to succeed but that doesn't mean it's hopeless. They won't inherit a thing till their 40th birthdays and they have to uphold my laws perfectly."
Andrew scoffed.
"30 more years? I might as dig my own grave."
"I've put myself in a bit of a legal bind but they're destroying themselves. Michael is dead...Geoffrey is a pariah in this town. Kyle just got shipped off to Copperdale. Just help the process along."’
"So...you're telling me...Andrew is after an inheritance I didn't even know I had? And...you've put all that pressure on me to make sure I earn it? And...you're not even my mom?"
"Yes."
"I don't even want my own world. That sounds stressful...but I can't just let Andrew have it"

It was a foggy morning the day Kyle and Christopher headed to Gilbert Garden's for an important meeting.
"Kyle, I'm glad Chris was able to convince you. My business partner and I are excited to close this deal."
"I just can't believe someone really wants to buy it."
"Don't undersell yourself. You've been working on this product for over a decade. It was just a matter of the World being ready for it."
"And what makes you think it's ready now?"
"Honestly it would be better for my Partner to explain. He's far more charismatic."
"Ah here he is now."
"Hope I didn't miss anything important."
"Not at all. You're just in time."
Kyle's heart dropped as the man entered the room and took the seat at the other end of the table. Something had told him it was too good to be true and now he knew why.
Andrew smiled confidently as he settled in. Chris started asking questions and Andrew answered them but Kyle couldn't focus.
"Kyle perhaps you'd like to take a moment to get your thoughts sorted."
"No, I'm fine...Can we think over the offer?"
"You can have till weeks end."
"Alright Kyle what's on your mind. This is what you've been working toward for years."
"We'll find someone else."
"There is no one else, Kyle. I know it's scary to let go after all this time but this is it. We're not getting another chance."
"I'll take that risk."
"Seriously-"
"I'm not putting my hard work into that man's dirty hands."
"What's wrong with Ben?"
"That Andrew guy...he's the type who takes what isn't his and destroys it."
"Meanwhile our old company is going to cash in on all our hard work."
"Just...trust me on this."
"I thought you said he'd jump on this, Ben. We don't have until the end of the week."
"We've waited this long we can wait a little longer. Sit down will you."
Andrew sat in a huff. "You promised me Kyle Kyleson would be erased."
"He will. Believe me this deal is his dream."
Ben rubbed his temple, "Provided that woman didn't tell him who you are."
"No way. She's smarter than that. If they're still together it's only because he doesn't know. I...could use that."
"See her again you mean?"
"If you're okay with it."
"It's not the worst idea."
"You've taught me well. I control her in primal ways she barely understands."
"Primal huh. You sure this is just about Kyle."
"You know I wouldn't be with a woman for any other reason."
"Good boy...now get on your knees and show me what else that pretty mouth can do."
That night Kyle and Ava took the twins down to Anchorpoint to see a movie and do crafts at the library. Ava found Kyle in the Art Corner. "Everything okay, Ava? You look a bit pale."
"I think the movie just made me a bit sick. I'm gonna step out for some fresh air."
"Okay."
It was quiet outside and the soft summer breeze tickled Ava's skin adding to the eerie feeling that she was being watched. She'd noticed it first in the movie but she'd become certain when she'd seen the figure through the window.
"I thought I made it clear to stay away."
Andrew clamped a hand over her mouth and pulled her around a corner where she jerked away from him.
"How dare you."
"I don't recall there being so much complaining before."
"I made it clear that if you came near me again..."
"You'd get arrested...yeah I remember."
Andrew smirked as she wrapped her arms around herself.
"That's what I thought. You're a lot of talk Ava but you'll still shut up when I tell you to. Now listen, You're husband was offered a deal today and if he doesn't take it...well certain pictures may end up in his possession"
"You took pictures?!"
Andrew smirked "Good ones too. From that day you went to the wedding. You'd lost all that weight and wore those tight pants that showed everything. And I pinned you over the bar."
"Stop! Kyle already knows about us."
"What!? You told him!?"
Before Ava could respond a body stepped in front of her pushing her back. "Is there a problem here?"
"Oh your wife needs you to speak for her now?"
"I'm sure she doesn't, but you don't seem to be able to take her 'no' for an answer. See this ring it means you already lost."
"That ring is just metal. You can have your wife Kyle, hide behind her like you've hidden behind your brother and sister. But mark my words...I'll be the one who wins in the end."
"What does that mean?"
"Perhaps you should ask your precious mommy for a history lesson."
Kyle put the twins to bed and found Ava staring at her reflection. "You okay?"
"I'm a little shaken. It only took him two seconds to get back in my head."
Kyle kissed her forehead. "I'll kiss it better."
She pulled him down, "I'm glad you were there."
"You didn't need me."
He stood to his feet pulling her away from the mirror.
"You know I've gotten pretty good at reading you. I never wanted to say this before cause it always seemed so important to you but...I really like your...um...rolls? like um...when you're fluffy? Ah no that came out wrong."
"That's crazy, Kyle."
"It's not. I hurt someone before I know you're stronger than her but that fear is still there. But I want you to be happy and healthy so I never said...I just...hate to see you hating something I love. So be thin if you want...but love yourself...please."
"I'm gonna get small enough to fit in those pants again and I'll wear them for you then we'll see who breaks first."
Kyle growled and rolled her under him and she cried out with surprised laughter. "I already know you're gonna win this one."
"I always win Kyle Kyleson."
