Andreia Horta as Joaquina da Silva Xavier in “Liberdade, Liberdade” (2016).
costume series: medieval fashion in period drama → crespines and cauls
The crespine was a headdress in which hair was concealed in two silken, half-spherical cases on either side of the head covered with heavy net of reticulated gold or silver cord interspersed with pearls and beads. These were usually held in place with a narrow fillet which may or may not have an additional crown or coronet added. Veils were often worn and some women preferred to wear the remainder of their hair hanging loose down the back. During the 14th century, the cylinder caul became fashionable exclusively among upper class women. Two cylinders were made of fine metalwork attached to a fillet or coronet, which could also be heavily jewelled and possibly worn with a veil. The cylinder caul was mainly formal wear for special occasions and were not worn everyday around the house. [x]
