LOST (2004 - 2010) 6.14 — The Candidate
Started thinking about how in Catch 22 you literally watch Desmond grappling with whether to let Charlie die in order to reunite with penny and ultimately he cannot go through with it. He cannot sacrifice Charlie and let him die just to be with the love of his life, the woman he has been chasing ever since he foolishly let her go, the reason he decided to turn the key and keep living.
And then in The Last Recruit you watch sayid grappling with whether to kill desmond because the man in black told him if he did he could be reunited with his love, and Desmond asks him “what would you tell her when she asked what you did to be with her?” Because Desmond has been in that exact same position and has grappled with the exact same conundrum. And ultimately sayid cannot bring himself to do it either, to sacrifice Desmond and let this man die just to be reunited with the love of his life and that’s what ultimately restores sayid’s humanity and now I feel so ill I need to lie down

You’re inside a hatch. It’s, er… a room full of equipment. There’s a blinking yellow light above a switch. You flick the switch… light goes off… and then you drown.

the worst fictional deaths are actually the ones you see coming, where there is enough foreshadowing that you have time to hope, against all odds, that the character will survive, even as you realise that there’s no way out this time, they’re not going to make it, this was always how it was going to end
