Daisy Jane sporting her warm weather haircut. Now, it's time for a swim.
Hypothyroidism in dogs
Well, Daisy Jane turned 3 in December 2014. Called her “Lazy Daisy” since she was about a year and a half old. Other than the beach or play, she was extremely mellow and slept a lot (as most dogs do).
Since her two-year wellness visit, our vet asked that she lose 10-15 lbs and be closer to 70lbs. I did everything, and ultimately her caloric intake was cut in half. However, she still maintained her 85-87lbs.
She always had a little bald spot below the base of her tail. However, after getting groomed the end of July 2014, she lost a lot of hair down the length of the top of her tail and the undercoat around the neck area of her shoulders and down her spine didn’t grow back. The grey skin she had on her back as long as I can remember got black and crusty.
All of these symptoms culminated in our vet testing her for thyroid issues the first week of December 2014. Test results showed extreme hypothyroidism.
The good news is that it is easily addressed with a simple daily medication. The only bad news is she has to take it the rest of her life….
Two and a half months later, she has lost the excess weight, the undercoat and tail hair is growing back, the sores are gone and her skin back to normal, and even her ears are less problematic. Oh, and she has her mojo back. While still a well-behaved, good dog, I have my crazy Daisy back when it is time for fun.
We hope this information might help others with an animal friend suffering from similar symptoms.

Daisy Jane & me enjoying Winter 2015 at the shore. Life is golden with a Golden.
No matter how hard you train, sometimes one's true inner self shines through. In our opinion, the Golden Retriever is the smartest dog of the bunch! Life is golden with a Golden, Daisy & me
It's November. Another day at the beach.... Why not. Life is golden with a Golden. Daisy & me
September 20, 2014--New England road trip in the Jeep with my girl. Life is golden with a Golden. Daisy & me
A morning of playing fetch in the surf with Daisy Jane.
How many Daisies does it take to get a ball out of the beach bag? I guess one. However, it took her more than 10 minutes to figure it out! Love that dog. Happy Labor Day 2014 from both of us. Life is golden with a Golden. Daisy & me
It has been a while since a post. So, I decided to take the initiative and post how I spent my day. Here it goes.
Saturday morning swim & fetch fest, check.
Post-swim bath for two, check.
Post-bath walk to Dot’s Pastry Shop to air dry, check.
Sitting patiently waiting for a morsel of doughnut to fall on the ground, no check. (Labor Day weekend is just not complete without Dot’s for some people. Maybe one day I will understand why.)
Errands around town, check.
Late lunch at Twisties Tavern out on the deck overlooking the bay & Corson’s Inlet, check.
Mid afternoon nap listening to the Don Henley station on Pandora to recharge, check.
Sitting on the OC Boardwalk people-watching, check.
Trying to get all I can out of the last weekend of Summer.
Life is golden with a Golden.

Do you see that moon?
Final Installment of My Trip to the Dominican Republic
After returning from the Dominican Republic, Daisy & I got a little sidetracked. We had hoped to do this post a few weeks ago. Better late than never, right?
After the group built the first house, we took an early morning respite and played the Los Cocos boys baseball team in a game of pick-up. Yours truly pitched the entire game. The kids scored eight runs in the first inning, which ended with eight (or nine) runs scored for the home team (including an out-of-the-ballpark homerun) and three runs for the visitors. The final score was 8 (or 9) to 3. A picture of the winning team is below....
.... On a side note, my middle school baseball coach, who cringed every time I took to the field, would have been proud. Not only did I pitch, but I pitched halfway decent for the entire game. Turned out to be the best baseball game I ever played. Just writing this makes me want to watch "The Natural," "Bull Durham," "For Love of the Game," "Major League," "Moneyball" or "Field of Dreams." ....
Also pictured below is the ball field (both the infield and the outfield), which also serves as a pasture for cows, goats and other animals when games are not being played.
On June 30th, a small group went to 27 Waterfalls. (See http://www.27charcos.com/index.php for more details and pictures.) It was an awesome experience, which I recommend anyone visiting the DR take the time to experience. The river was low due to a month or so without any measurable rain.... Saw a random caballero after taking the picture of the bridge. These two pictures and the pictures are some of the best from the trip.
The third picture is of Lenny, a stone sculptor, who can be found making sculptures and selling his artwork at 27 Waterfalls. Truly an amazing artist--simply uses a couple of machetes and a few chisels to make some very intricate works of art.
Ah, Cabarete. A view of the beach from the water. And, the trip would not be complete without a selfie with Pedro, our guagua (a.k.a. a taxi) driver.
Esta es la casa de Griselda y Rodolfo. Viví aquí durante mi viaje.
Do something good today. Life is golden with a Golden.

Just chillin' on her favorite bench.
Another brief update from Los Cocos, DR.
The first two pictures are from the first house dedication ceremony for the home we built up in the mountain. The next four pictures are construction of the second home in Los Cocos (including a picture of Mario, our amazing host, and yours truly hammering a nail). The next two pictures are of the area in Los Cocos I am staying. The last picture is from a Sweet 16 party/fiesta last night. Everyone (including me) danced the merengue, which is a dance that evolved in the DR…. So I am told.
Life is golden with a Golden (or extremely grateful people) in your life.
Just a brief update while I have internet access. On a mission trip (sans Daisy) to build a couple homes in the Dominican Republic. Life is golden with a Golden.

Our early morning surf session off 22nd Street beach. After the novelty of fetching the ChuckIt! football wore off, she decided it was more fun to chase seagulls. Hence, these action shots.
Daisy and I even found a 3’ sand shark in a gulley, but we decided to refrain from going shark hunting.
After our beach antics, we walked to Dot's Pastry Shop for some caffeine and carboloading.
