It was a warm, sunny day in the peak of spring when Batman tried out for his high school baseball team. Batman was nervous because it was his first time playing baseball on a high school level. After successful try-outs, Batman made the team for the Columbia Eagles. Since it was Batman’s first year playing with a high school league, he was a bit scared because he didn't know how well he was going to play on the team. The first practice of the season was very intense especially since the first game was against an undefeated team. Later that day after practice, the team finds out who will be starting in the first game. The players shove and push each other as Coach Hulk posts the starting player list for the first game. Batman becomes more confident as he sees everyone jumping up and down, praising themselves for making the list. A bit reluctant, Batman hurries to the list, but doesn't see his name in red. After feeling defeated, Batman walks off the field with his head down questioning his ability to even be apart of the team. Two of his teammates notice Batman standing on the sideline and quickly approach him with worry. Staggering and out of breath, Superman and Robin ask, “Hey man! Are you on the list?”. Batman looks up with a saddened expression and responds, “No.…I’m not”. Feeling sorry for his teammate, Superman tells Batman, “it's ok, don't worry about it. Remember we are still a family!”. “We'll get you on that list!”, chimes Robin. “Ok, well let's get to work!”, Batman excitedly replies, feeling uplifted. So after Batman’s pep talk, him, Superman and Robin begin practicing even harder and focusing on batting and infield work. After school the next day, the team was very excited and hyped in knowing they were getting ready to play not only their first game of the season, but one of the best teams in their district, the Might Mountain Tigers! So winning this game would be very important. The Columbia Eagles baseball team prayed before the game started and everyone who started, hit the field with excitement and anguish. The sun was blazing on a warm, crisp Friday afternoon as you hear the umpire yell, “LET'S PLAY BALL!” Once the game starts, the Might Mountain Tigers are up to bat first. As the stands get quiet, the first pitch begins and you hear the “PING!” from the metal bat hit the ball as the opponent’s player makes his first run. It seems the first three innings whiz by as the score closes to 6 to 0, with the Mighty Mountain Tigers leading the game. Once the Columbia Eagles gets three outs from the Tigers, it’s Columbia’s turn to begin batting. The crowd grows quiet as the first batter steps up to home plate, bunts the ball and makes it to first base. The momentum builds after the team begins scoring making the score go up to 5, it is now a one possession game of 6 to 5. Finally it’s the bottom of the ninth and Coach Hulk makes a few changes to the lineup and shockingly puts Batman in the game with two outs left. The bases are loaded when it’s time for Batman to bat. Even though it was only 65 degrees that afternoon, to Batman, it felt like 100 degrees from the anticipation and pressure of proving his worth as a Freshman baseball player. However, with the game at stake, Batman hits a grand slam bringing the final score 6 to 9 making the Columbia Eagles starting season 1-0. Batman hard work pays off as he sees his name in bold, red letters on the starting player list for the next game.
