The sleep-deprived med student finishes the last sentence of their report with a sigh, nudging the steadily-slipping glasses frames back up the bridge of their nose before emailing off the report for review. Having gone through the process so many times before, Rutile had gotten into a habit of putting off all tasks they deemed āunnecessaryā until the absolute end of their process; often times they have to be reminded by their unruly-haired roommate and significant other that some routines, such as eating, sleeping, and showering, are not optional. Unfortunately, the deadline for their current project happened to fall around a certain romantic holiday they had promised to share with Padparadscha, Rutileās lovely, attractive, messy, loud, affectionate, compassionate, too-suave-for-their-own-good roommate and significant other.
With another vocal exhale, Rutile closes their laptop and sprawls across the second-hand leather couch, removing their glasses to wipe a hand across their face. A quick glance at the clock on the microwave in the kitchen brings to Rutile the realization that Padparadscha had been absent from the shared house for five and a half hours grocery shopping. Rutile frowns and rolls off the couch, catching themselves on their feet and slowly rolling up, stretching their spine with a soft groan. The med student places their glasses back on their nose and runs a hand through their messy second-day hair before shuffling into the kitchen to retrieve their cell phone from the counter.
Upon seeing an emoji-filled text from a certain curly-maned roommate, the soft clicks and jostling sounds of a key entering and turning the handle of the front door filled Rutileās ears. A cheery āhey, babeā is shouted from the doorway and Rutile returns in kind, leaning around the partial-wall to greet their significant other.
What Rutile was not expecting, was their loverās arms full with a blooming bouquet and an oddly pink pizza box accompanying the grocery bags.
With an embarrassed laugh, the med student meets their lover in the entryway to rescue the vase of flowers balanced haphazardly on top of the pizza box. With the roses cradled safely in Rutileās arm, they wrap their free arm around Padparadschaās waist to pull them into a gentle kiss, pulling away soon after with an appreciative and excited smile on their obviously-tired face.
āDarling, you really didnāt have to.ā Rutile unwinds their arm from around their lover and leads them to the kitchen, placing the vase on the counter of the half-wall, in view of the living room.
āI know I didnāt have to, but I wanted to do something.ā A lopsided grin is stretched across the curly haired studentās face as they emptied the contents in their arms onto the counter. āYou wouldnāt let me take you out somewhere fancy so the least I could do was spoil my hard-working doctor-to-be here.ā Padparadschaās arms, now empty, snaked their way around Rutileās waist, their forehead resting on their loverās shoulder.
āThank you, I really appreciate it, Pads.ā The smile on Rutileās face grows as they rest their own arms atop their loverās. Padparadscha begins to gently rock them, swaying to an inaudible symphony written entirely on their love.
