Ringling Bros calls their captive breeding program (elephant farm) “The Center For Elephant Conservation.” Their mission statement:“To apply basic physiological research efforts and state-of-the-art reproductive technologies toward wildlife species management and conservation”

Ringling Bros claims that the performances are educational and that the animals are not only trained via positive reinforcement, but they also have a “bond” with the trainers based on respect and trust:

“As the steward of the largest sustainable elephant population in the Western Hemisphere, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® takes its responsibility to educate the public about these magnificent animals…The big cats showcased at Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey® have a relationship with their trainers based on mutual trust and respect… Our training methods are based on reinforcement in the form of food rewards and words of praise”

Ringling also claims that the tricks the elephants perform are based on natural behaviors.

As you can read in the quote up top, they are also pushing the idea that their elephant handlers are the best in the business and love the animals so much as they have devoted their lives to caring for them. Any of this sound familiar to you, dolphin captivity supporters? Every justificiation for a marine park can be used to justify the circus. And the public is swallowing each and every one of them hook line and sinker. If the arguments you use to support a pro-dolphin-captivity position can be used to justify animal abuse — you need to take a good hard look at what you are attempting to justify.

These are the only photos I could find of Junior, the infamous ‘hidden whale’ who was taken from the ocean and his pod, transported to Marineland and kept in a dimly lit warehouse, swimming in endless circles in a concrete tank that was smaller than the average hotel swimming pool with no companionship for 5 years until he died of ‘unknown causes’.

Whenever I see someone posting pictures of Marineland Canada, saying how much fun they have there or how well the animals are cared for or how it’s not that bad… All I can think to say is, ‘Do you know who Junior was?’

Agreed. Both Junior and Nova are the two main reasons why Marineland Canada should have been closed down long ago. The park and all the people involved should be charged with animal cruelty for their deaths.

I can. This little warehouse was where they used to store animals until they could move them out to the “shop floor” to be gawked at by people. Junior spent almost his entire captive life (which was unsurprisingly short) inside this warehouse. At one point I think he had some dolphins with him, but eventually they were moved out into the park. Nova lived there for a while, IIRC. (Nova died of starvation, if you were wondering) This warehouse had no sunlight, or way for fresh air to get in.

The film A Fall From Freedom has a section on Junior, I think.

MLC has one of the worst track records for keeping captive orca. All the orca born there have died, and the one who survived longest, Splash, was moved to another park when he was around 3. The only orca that have lived there who are currently still living are Kiska, Ikaika and Katina. I’m pretty sure that had Katina not been moved, she would have died years ago.

Junior endured one of the most disgusting and disgraceful treatments of any captive orcas. He was captured in Iceland and was kept in a holding facility for two years before being bought by Marineland Canada so they could train him and sell him on, but for whatever reason he never really took to training so no park wanted to buy him. As a result Marineland put him in a TINY pool that was so small he could barely turn around, in a warehouse and left him there alone for four years before he died sometime in July 1994.

Even to this day, the park owners have been known to get aggressive with press who ask questions about Junior. The park has never confirmed his death, how he died or even that he ever existed or lived there.

Nova was a 4 year old captive bred male who developed a hole in his throat which meant that he wasn’t getting enough food to eat and sustain him. It was incurable and instead of putting him to sleep to end his misery, Marineland left him to starve to death, in a back pool over the course of seven months!!!!. The park denied his death for a long time afterward. And this was only in 2001, not in the old days before the parks new any better.

A new documentary called “Revelations” is currently being made about Marineland and will focus on there two deaths, so keep an eye out for it.
