SECOND TRIAL

The hand movements are not as consistent compared to the last trial, but the music effects on the artist's sketches are much more apparent.

The lineworks are clearly smoother during the first song compared to the roughness and sketchiness during the last song.

The sketches are more like illustrations and they depict real scenes compared to the sketches in the previous trial. From here it is clear what images and scenes the artist imagines during different songs, almost like a comic book storyboard. Through this concept, the artist in this trial conveys the tempo of the songs through different amount of dynamic qualities and even lineworks (from a picture of a melancholy girl to a sketch of a colourful bold scene).

In the first trial, the increasing speed within hand movements is evident throughout the 5 pictures.

In terms of the outcome itself, the sketches also reflect the music tempo with colours and line-style (colours get brighter and more saturated as the beat increases, while lines and shapes drawn are sharper and quicker).

Project 3- Test Shoot

Instead of only recording the end results of the sketches from each artist, I decided to capture the movement of the entire artist's body during different songs as it seems that it would convey the effects of music more effectively and clearly.

In this shoot, each pictures captured around 4 minutes of the body movement throughout the entire song. However, 4 minutes proved to be too long an exposure for capturing different speeds of body movement (in the photoset above, each picture actually had the artist moving at different speeds, but because 4 minutes was a bit too long, all of the pictures captured turned out very similar to one another).

Project 3 - Proposal

I have taken into consideration the wider forms of art as a whole, and more specifically the origins of creativity. The theme of the project will be centered around whether external influences affect artistic mood and therefore the final result.

Inspiration is derived from experiences through one or a combination of the 5 senses. In this project, the role of sound in inspiration-forming is investigated through the analysis of the pieces produced by several different artists who listen to various songs/music.

The Hypothesis: Music plays a huge role in an artist's process of working. Different types of music that feature different rhythms and style affect the artist's final work. E.g. a slow peaceful song would produce a calm and empty picture, while a rock song would produce a more dynamic and busy one.

The Method: 3 different artists will be chosen, each one expressing art in different ways. (Perhaps an illustrator or an abstract artist, etc) Each artist will create 5 different pieces with each artwork based on a particular song. (i.e. 5 songs will be chosen, and the artist will only listen to one of these when drawing their first piece. The next piece will have a different song played, and so on...)

With each artist, the 5 pieces of art should be put together in order of the speed of the songs that the artworks were drawn to (e.g. slow -> fast beat). From here, a pattern within the artworks should be clearly visible; proving the hypothesis true.

The data collection performed in this project will cause results that are somewhat uncertain, due to the subjective nature of the form and inception of art itself. However, this all the more reinforces the idea of experimentation and documenting; the key ideas of the brief.

Project 2 - The 'Physical' Object

The physical object created was a digital animation of a 3D model representing the idea of memories.

The animation can be viewed in a previous post of this blog. (The post before the last)

Spheres were used to represent sets of memories (which could be a collection from an event or a day etc). The clusters and random positions of spheres illustrates the huge collection of memories that people have, collected over decades.

The way the camera travels through the glass spheres to the main sphere(the one with image textured all over) and the translucency of the other spheres contrasting against the lucidity of the that main sphere; all of these reflect the way our mind works when we remember images and events of our lives.

The main sphere features textures of roughly scrambled images of scenes, which shows the sense of un-sureness people get when remembering images in their head (e.g. when one tries to remember a person's face, or details in the background)

The entire idea and how it was created digitally portrays the undeviating and whimsical state of the thing we call memory.The digital and non-physical factor plays a huge role in illustrating the reverie of memories. People can talk about it and describe their memories, but no physical (or even digital...) representation can truly capture the qualities that make memories unique to the individual. However, in this project the most convincing approach would be to have a digitally-created object.
