“Love is like a beautiful flower which I may not touch, but whose fragrance makes the garden a place of delight just the same.” — Helen Keller
“Has anything in particular caught yer eye?” he asked curiously, tucking his hands behind his back in a bid to straighten his posture as they walked. James hadn’t personally taken to Roman history as of yet but hearing a person speak of something they were passionate about was always of interest to him. “Kingdom or not, it is a great responsibility. I believe anyone with charge over land should make the effort tae know the people, the size of the population should only drive you tae try harder. Any ruler who loses sight of that shouldn’a be a ruler at all.”
“I was just reading about Caesar’s conquest of Gaul, but honestly some of the Roman love affairs interested me most,” Clementina admitted sheepishly, worried that she went from sounding like an educated lady to a lovestruck girl. “Take Antony and Cleopatra, for instance. I cannot imagine loving someone so much that I would rather die than live in a world without them present.” Clementina lended a vastly interested ear to the man, as such wise words were seldom spoken by the nobles that she knew in Florence. “You are quite right, signore. I believe my brother could learn much from you.”
“Well, it should be obvious that you are not your father. Hid indecencies shouldn’t be held to your account. Even my father was a numpty at times, but I wouldn’t let anyone call me that for a second. Perhaps the people will realize in time.” Mairie stumbled but managed to curtsy back to the regional duchess. “Enchantment is all mine, honestly. Would you like to accompany me to the marketplace? Your guards are welcome to come, of course. They’re not the ones I’m avoiding.”
“One would think that it was obvious, but all the people of Florence see is a crown of jewels. It matters not whose head it rests upon.” Offering a curtsy in return, Clementina’s face softened and her eyes lit up at the mere thought of acquainting herself with a fellow noble lady. “I would love nothing more,” she replied, waving to her guards excitedly to join them. In truth she was glad to have them present to escort both ladies to the marketplace, and the duchess knew that she wouldn’t have felt completely safe without them. “Was there anything in particular that you wished to purchase, or did you merely plan to see Rome’s wares?”
The word betrothed made his spine tingle and painted a wide smile on his mouth. He’d grown warm to the idea of being married… to Izolda at least. ❝ Yes. I’ve yet to make a formal announcement but I am to marry again. She’s rather wonderful. I’m sure you’d think so too.❞ He pushed back the cape that did not belong to him on to the seamstress and hoped she’d return with his own. ❝ You know it’s amusing. The last time we saw each other as children.❞ he paused slightly as chuckle passed his lips ❝ I thought I’d be marrying you. Bare with me, in my defense I was a child. As a result, I had mere childish thoughts.❞
Clementina felt like a tiny needle had pierced her heart when she heard the news. It wasn’t a rumor like she had originally believed, and it was hard for her to hide the fact that she was disappointed. She did, however, offering the king a bright grin. “Yes, I’m sure I would.” By the time Edvard brought up his childhood belief that they would one day be wed instead, the duchess was almost in tears. Of course, she didn’t believe that such thoughts were childish, as she had always believed the same thing. Nonetheless, it was destiny that he marry the Polish queen, and hence she held her tongue and did not reveal that the feelings were reciprocated.
“You’re from Rome, my lady? Why would anyone here dislike you?” It occurred to Mairie very suddenly that it was entirely possible that this woman knew who she was. It was equally possible she was a queen married off into a foreign land and Mairie was being horribly rude to her. “Forgive me. My name is Mairie Stewart. I’m from Scotland.”
“I am from Florence. I will not venture into disclosing all off the details of the matter, as they are far too sordid for anyone’s tastes, but my father commited some unexcusable crimes against his people.” Clementina offered the Scottish lady a deep curtsy, knowing that if His Majesty and His Highness were any examples of Scottish behavior, she would show no malice to the woman for any reason. “I am enchanted to meet you, my lady. I am Duchess Clementina, of Florence as I previously mentioned.”
“I imagine it makes the experience that bit more riveting to know the history of the stones on which ye walk, hm?” In truth he knew very few women whom found solace within books, most either fell into the category that believed women being too educated was a dangerous thing or they were too wild to allow the pages to tell them stories, they would rather live them. “Which kingdom would that be, your Grace? I’m afraid I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing any of the neighbouring kingdoms for myself.”
“Precisely,” Clementina agreed with a cheerful nod of her head. Thus far, she had found Roman history so captivating that she was no longer a stranger in any of the Roman libraries. Of course some nobles would look down on the duchess for such things, but she had always found being educated and aware of her surroundings to be of the utmost importance. “The Duchy of Florence, Your Highness,” she replied, smiling proudly. “It is too small to be considered a kingdom, but I believe that it allows us to get to know our subjects more intimately, don’t you?”
“Aye. Overcas’ weather reminds me o’ home. Sco’land was always rainy an’ grey.“ Arthur could tell that, at this point, his brother would have jested abou’ somethin’, bu’ it wasnae Arthur’s way. He was nae good at jokin’ and small talk, so he fell silent for a moment.
He let his arms hang by his sides, an’ stood stiffly as she spoke. His father had always told him tae relax, tae not stand tae attention like a bloody bawheid, but he couldnae help it. It felt unnatural tae stand any other way. When Her Grace explained meetin’ new people, Arthur nodded.
“Aye, I havenae seen so many nobles on one place. I me’ Her Majesty, the Princess o’ Ethiopia, yesterday. I had only read about Africa in bestiaries! T’was a mighty honour, tae be sure.” He paused. “O’ course, I take time tae wander the gardens. I need peace an’ quie’, now an’ then.”
“I imagine that it would be the perfect place to visit if I ever grow tired of the sun.” In her mind, the maiden wanted to see the sights of Arthur’s country anyway, and imagined how lovely winters would be there.
Clementina resisted the urge to giggle when she noticed that His Majesty was standing at attention like a soldier or one of her guards would, but then again the duchess assumed that he likely fought in his fair share of battles being from Scotland, and it would have been odd for him to relax among someone who was not wielding a sword or the like.
“Ah, yes, I met the fair Princess Amira myself not too long ago. I never thought that I would meet anyone like her in all my days, and I admire her ability to stand up for what is right.” The Florentian admired the change of subject, and was astonished at how similar the two were beginning to seem. “I believe that it is my favorite pasttime. I would never want to ask anything of my future husband, but I do hope that whoever I marry will let me have a garden like this. I believe that it’s one of the only material things I would wish for.”
"Is it true that..." Finish it in my ask box!

You are too beautiful for my sanity to handle, I must leave
“Whoever you are, I do wish that you would remain. I could use such a courteous individual in my presence, and Rome is such a fine city to dwell in.”
Anonymously send my muse what yours really thinks of them
rumour has it you're not a real blonde.
“I am appalled at such a rumor. My family is very fair-haired; it comes from my mother’s side of the family tree.”
Rumor has it you're torn between two lovers, feeling like a fool.
“Not exactly. I hold affection for multiple people, but I would not say that I am torn between any number of them.”
Send “Rumour has it...” and a rumour about my muse in my ask!
My muse will then react to it being spread.
❝ Well it isn’t covered in the colour red. What kind of fool dawns red to a field of white, green or even brown. Unless you’re fighting in a field of roses… It’s quite literally the stupidest thing you could do. Any king who has to remind it’s subjects that he is king, is no king at all. But what wouldn’t the southerner do to make himself feel important? ❞ The smile from his lips quickly fell and the as he remembered that Clementina was from a land not so far away. It often stray from his mind, he couldn’t accept the fact that someone he held so dear was different. Yet, he believed a big part of his adoration for came because she was ever so gentle. ❝ It’s a very plain white, all from the pelts of bears. ❞
Clementina chuckled at the mental image that His Majesty gave her of a lord entering the battlefield with a blazing scarlet cape. “Yes, that does seem rather ridiculous, doesn’t it?” She shrugged off his jest about Southerners as it was mostly true of the men and focused on the task at hand, relaying the cape’s description to the seamstress. “I hear that you are betrothed,” the duchess mentioned offhandedly, turning back to Edvard as she made sure that she appeared to show no malice.
in a land full of princesses and queens, who would fall in love with a duchess?
“I cling to the hope that one day a man will fall in love with my mind and manners and not my title alone, though it might interest you to know that where I come from there are no kings and queens or princesses and princes, as the duke and duchess hold the highest power and rule Florence.”
