The mere sight of the humans had been enough to put the bonobo in a particularly sour mood.
There had been so many things that Koba had wanted to do to them, both for past sins and present, but he knew that Caesar would never allow it. He’d had to settle with a prolonged, purely hatred fueled glare from one human face to the next before having to tear himself away and leave with the group. He couldn’t help but feel as though the apes might not have done enough. If the humans didn’t heed their warning, their army would have the first strike. Even though the Council had voted to disagree with him, Koba still firmly believed that the best course of action on their part was to attack before the humans had the chance. But he would follow Caesar, regardless.
With hatred and frustration consuming the majority of his mind at the moment, there was a feral keenness in Koba’s face that the warpaint only served to intensify. Naturally, this had not gone unnoticed by the other apes, though most knew better than to engage the bonobo when he was in this state. Their fears were mostly unfounded, as Koba had no intention of disturbing the peace of the colony himself. That job was left to the humans, and already they’d had an effect.
It was Luca, the gorilla of highest rank, that dared address Koba’s state of mind. The bonobo watched his comrade’s signs and huffed.
‘Koba think this might not be enough.’
The grizzled ape chose his signs carefully, for the last thing he wanted was to give the wrong message or impression.
'Humans could come back, make first attack. Spear not beat gun. Koba worried for apes.’
That much was true. Yes, Koba loathed humans with every fiber of his being, but his loyalty was to the ape colony and he believed that they were still in danger. He wanted to protect this life they had created, this family that he finally now had. Humans had already taken so much from him, from them, and if they took this too…
Even the thought alone made Koba grip the reins of his horse more tightly.
He hoped Caesar was making the right decision. Caesar almost always did. But Koba just had a very bad feeling that this was very far from being over.
