RELIGIOUS AFFILIATION : Prays to the god of Mirenthia, Artemeon. Despite his weaker connection, Cassius is likely considered more pious than some, as he invokes the name of his god frequently and prays often. An accomplished hunter and skilled with the bow, it is not uncommon to hear Cassius ask for Artemeon to bless the arrow he will shoot, and to say a prayer before every hunt he embarks on. Whenever he takes game, he prays over the animal and uses it in the ways required by Artemeon. When it comes to his beloved horses, he also invokes the god to watch for them and care for them. Despite the fact that he has a weaker connection and was blessed with no gifts, these actions and requests do sometimes cause others to wonder if he is not being quite truthful about his connection.

GIFTS :  The most marvel thing about Cassius, although perhaps the mundane thing at the same time; his gifts did not manifest at all. Whereas those in his family are prone to a strong connection, Cassius never felt the pull in his heart. Animals do have a proclivity for the young man, however, Cassius maintains that this is a product of hard work, not by any ethereal granting. This same explanation is used for many of his pursuits, as Cassius likes to remind those that like to suggest he is in fact gifted that this is a discredit to his work ethic. Artemeon did not make him an accomplished archer, but many years of work did so.

Too much interaction often requires him to duck away to recharge his social batteries. An ISFP, Cassius is more of an adventurer, enjoying other people’s stories more than his own. However, Cassius is often guided by his emotions more than logic, which leads to some tricky situations. A certain level of self-awareness to this makes him somewhat hesitant to form lasting connections instead of easier, surface level friendships, but once Cassius trusts a person, he will always stand with them. A big part of his personality is a love of living within the moment, and not getting too caught up on the future.

Often unkempt black hair, which he alternates between shearing it closer to his skull or allowing it to grow long enough to tie back. 

REPUTATION : By trying to not have any reputation at all, Cassius has managed to make himself a more controversial figure. Despite being in line to inherit the throne, he wishes to do anything but, earning himself a repute among the Mirens which although banal, does cause tongues to wag. Some think him bold, to remove himself in such a way knowing he has a weak connection to the gods, or to simply take control of his own fate once again. Others see this flightiness as an attempt to deny his birthright, and him denying the will of Artemeon and being ungrateful for what great destiny he may have. More interesting, his reputation crosses kingdom boundaries, as since the death of King Lothar and the ascension of King Ilias to the throne, he has become more of a staple within the Neriaki court. People whisper of his presence there, and his reason why, however rarely to any confront him about his purpose. They prefer to share the secrets of his closeness with Ilias behind closed doors while casting shaded glances at him when he makes an appearance. 

ASPIRATIONS : Where some aspire to grandeur and the throne, that of their own kingdom or the high throne on the island, Cassius desires neither. In fact, he actively runs from the former. Instead, the young Duke aspires to be left in peace to enjoy his horses and his travels, allowing him to meet many and learn about the world, and then follow his heart home every night to where it glows warm. Something do mundane but so typical for Cassius is he on day aspires to breed the finest horses in Prospera, and be known for the quality of his breeding operation. 

WANTED CONNECTIONS : An old flame perhaps? Maybe one of his short flings in the far reaches? Would also love for someone to bring in his father! Or perhaps a potential challenger who is willing to be adopted into Miren succession but is just the opposite of Cassius.

THOSE LINGERING MOMENTS, WHERE the night clings on. Those hours before day truly becomes day, were the times Eliana could be most tranquil. She was both a night owl and an early riser; staying up into the dead of night and rising before the sun rose. Sleep had recently been difficult for her to find; her mind plagued with nonsensical dreams, nagging thoughts at the back of her head, unanswered questions spinning around in her brain. It was easier if Eliana simply avoided sleeping for too long, she could make up for the lost energy with black coffee, nonetheless. 

Eliana was on a mission to replenish her supply when the door to her brother’s chambers rattled. She stopped dead in her tracks, shoes softly scuffing against the stone floor. Ilias was certainly not a morning person, meaning that it could only be one other culprit rattling the doorknob. As if summoned by Osiris himself, Cassius Rennard, Duke of Fox Hall quietly crept out of the door, hurriedly shutting it behind him with careful consideration as to not make any noise, ❝ Awfully dangerous for you to be sneaking out of my brother’s bed with courtiers about, is it not dear Cassius? ❞ Eliana could not help the sly smirk that spread across her face as she observed the Duke’s dumbfounded expression. He had been caught red handed, ❝ Coffee? Breakfast? I was just on the way myself. ❞ She did not offer him the opportunity to decline, for as soon as she finished speaking, she strode off down the hall, expectant on Cassius to follow.

             The hours that hung between late night and early morning, amorphous to time and seemingly endless and short all at once, where a time when Cassius wished he was not active but with more frequency found himself so. When on his travels, having a distinct sleep schedule had been something he had not strived for, an indulgence he could have when praying to a god that instead marked prayer with certain acts rather than particular times of day. 

     Ilias did not have the same luxury. Osiris ached for the dark nights and early mornings, beckoning to his disciples to give him their prayers in those twilight hours, when the world became confused of whether it was day or night. 

     Stepping out of the aforementioned King’s private chambers, Cassius had every intent to conduct a ritual of his own that had become more common place the closer the two men grew. A pilgrimage to the kitchens to collect food and other nourishment, wrapped in a durable cloth the Neriak were so famous for. From there, a continuance of his journey to the private shrine he knew Ilias to frequent. It was easier when they were in Neriak - his endeavor was much shorter to find Ilias in the private shrine within the great Makai castle. Here, in the great capital, finding such reclusive areas could prove more a task. Fortunately, of the two of them, Cassius had always been the more elusive. 

     What was not expected was other lingering souls suspended in the morning’s break. Another child of Osiris, although much more direct than her male counter part. A smile quirked at the corner of his lips after a moment of surprise as she called to him, her words contrary to the volume of her voice. The shock of her appearance faded from his face like the night was slowly being eaten outside by the rays of the sun.

     “Princess,” he said, giving her a slight bow, one of respect but clear familiarity as he did not go so far as to give overt displays. “Perhaps, if you speak but a little louder, we can call all to observe,” the words carried a tone of jest, but there was a warning laced in the undertones. 

     Fast and loose was perhaps the best way to describe much of what Cassius did and how he comported himself. Even now, in a situation that counseled tact and perhaps a high degree of cloak and dagger maneuvers, Cassius did not hide himself so much. It was not as if many did not already know, Cassius was well aware that those around them mostly pretended to keep secrets only in fear of scolding for encouraging in the gossip. When he wandered the halls in Makai, whispers oft followed him, with silence settling as he walked near. In a way, it was refreshing to have a direct confrontation of it, someone deciding to tease him to his face as opposed to behind his back. 

     Giving a slight shake of his head at the Princess’s candor, less so in ire and more in an almost fond exasperation, Cassius followed the woman, falling in step with her and gracefully offering an elbow so he may play the good gentleman and escort her. 

     “It so happens we have a common destination,” Cassius said with ease as he peered about. Visits to the capital were not a common occurrence for him, so he could not help but occasionally admire the great architecture. “Your brother has yet to return this morning,” he continued the conversation, although the slight worry that entered his voice was unmistakable, “so I figured it would be prudent to go get some food so when he returned from his observances to Osiris, he at least did not have to wait long until a meal could be served. I am pleased that my journey is no longer in solitude though - this morning is far too nice to dwell in loneliness.”

     Curiosity as to Eliana’s early rising, however, lingered with Cassius. Ilias’s habits had become known to him, but the younger was more of a wild card in his mind, an erratic force he had yet to pin down fully. “Pray tell, although I am happy to be in your company, what are you doing haunting these halls at such odd hours?”

when: february 498 AD; early morning where: the king of Neriaks private chambers, capitol city closed to @king-ilias

         The faint beginning rays of sunlight attempted to peak through the drawn curtains, making them struggle to block the light. The still soft light painted itself over where Cassius was tangled in the bedsheets, dark hair a mess as it lay loose. The young Duke blinked his eyes as the first drops of sun appeared, for a moment pulling one of the fine blankets up as if to cover his face so he could return back to sleep. However, in the process, he cast an arm next to him, searching for something that he knew offered warmth. 

     Finding only empty bed, Cassius let out a low groan of frustration, before turning himself off of his stomach to lay on his back, hand resting on his chest as he looked at the pillow next to his own. The blankets were turned more than he was capable of on his own, and he knew his memory was correct that the bed had been occupied by another beside himself when he had headed to sleep for the night. 

     Sitting up, eyes squinting against the still faint but offensive sun, the blankets pooled around his waist, leaving his bare chest to be hit by a sudden chill. Before he could think of whether to get up and find something warmer to wear or to just damn Ilias and curl back into the warm blankets, the creak of the chamber door opening made him aware his company was returning. 

     Flopping back down into the bed that had been provided with the chambers they were given - there seemed to be perks to being a king rather than an errant heir, as the comfort was magnificent - Cassius waited a moment for the sounds of someone trying to poorly sneak about ceased. 

     “I am awake,” he said, his voice rough with sleep. He cleared it for a moment before looking over to where the sounds of Ilias came from. With a sigh of pure drama, he looked up at the ceiling as he continued, “awake and once again alone as someone, someone, insists that he must pray at the hours that not even a mouse dare squeak for hazard of waking another.”

     It was an accusation without malice. The Neriak god demanded much more regimented prayer than Cassius’s own. It did not stop the duke from continuing to be displeased by the early morning, or late night depending on who you consulted, hours that his lover sometimes kept.

      it  was  hard  to  play  NICE  ,  especially  when  nobles  said  the  most  idiotic  things.  at  breakfast  one  had  had  the  gall  to  ask  if  petrons  could  transform  into  snakes.  under  the  watchful  gaze  of  the  queens  ,  maeve  had  no  other  choice  but  to  laugh  as  if  his  ignorance  was  amusing  and  politely  say  ‘  no  ,  i’m  afraid  not  ’. 

     now  maeve  growled  at  his  stupidity  and  pictured  his  and  others’  faces  on  the  training  dummies.  she  danced  through  the  maze  of  them  ,  blades  singing  as  they  met  target  after  target.  finishing  the  maneuver  ,  maeve  paused  ,  her  back  to  the  dummies  and  swords  hanging  loosely  at  her  side.  pants  rolled  off  of  her  tongue  ,  the  exertion  felt  good  ,  like  she  had  finally  done  something.  

     the  relief  was  short  lived  however  —  maeve  felt  eyes  on  her  back.  lips  pulled  into  a  scowl  ,  she  whipped  around  ,  only  just  holding  herself  back  from  pointing  the  swords  in  hand  at  the  unwelcome  guest.   

     “  and  what  is  it  you  want?  ” 

         If he used every time he was away from his homeland to waive his need to practice his skills, Cassius would never hold a bow again. Or at least not in a way that was functional or worth his time or heritage. It was for this reason that wherever his adventures took him, no matter the kingdom, Cassius would find his way to a space where he could once again release a few bolts. Almost as if to remind himself and his great bow that he could. 

     In other kingdoms, he was more apt to disappear into nearby woods, bringing function to the process by targeting a creature he could either use for food or sell to someone who would. The great capitol, however, did not offer much for dense forestry. Only the island of Artemeon would offer that, and no man barring Zeenan dared step foot into its mysteries. Instead, Cassius was directed by residents of the island city down to the castle grounds, where many traveling soldiers or those practiced in physical arts would spend their time and practice. It was set up spacious enough, various training dummies stationed about. Archery butts were set up facing away from the rest of the training grounds - probably a safe choice considering how many errant arrows likely left untrained bows. 

     Perhaps his first mistake was turning his back to where those training dummies were. Trying to measure out in his head just how far the butts were from his current position, to figure out exactly how much he wanted to exert himself today. It was the sound that caught his attention, and not necessarily that someone invaded his space. Years of hunting and living among the wild had made him keen to his surroundings, so when the woman behind him went through her maneuvers, he realized just how close they were. 

     Taking a quick step back as to afford more clearance between himself and a training dummy, Cassius raised an eyebrow at her immediate hostility. Slowly, he raised his hands up from his sides, palms facing out towards the young woman. It was a gesture that relayed his lack of weapon, or intent. It felt like those moments he tried to gentle a horse that had gone wild in its eye. 

     “Merely to be out of your way,” he responded easily, indicating with a quick tilt of his head just how close he had been to one of the training dummies. 

     Lowering his hands back down, he swung a long and narrow burlap sheath from where it had been across his back. Many an untrained eye assumed it housed a staff, but the great yew longbow emerged as Cassius pulled its protective casing off. 

     “I had hoped there was enough room for many to use the area,” he said. Pulling a long piece of twine from a pouch on his belt, Cassius looped it onto the end of the stave where a cut had been made, before placing that end against the ground and leaning slightly on the stave so it gave under his push, just enough for him to loop the other end of the twine around the top. When he released it, the shape of the bow was immediately more recognizable. “I would much rather go about my day without the potential for an accidental sword in my back?”

Best Friends

Zeean came across Cass when they were very young, a priest in training and an heir to a throne - an unlikely pair, but one that soon became inseparable.
