Give us a vote for #BestOfChi #BestRecordStore? We know that we're niche/specialty/deeper digger-oriented -- a real long shot for a people's choice win -- but what an honor for our 20th Anniversary it'd be, right? Thanks!

A little story about the beginning of Dusty Groove, 20 years ago this spring, with photos taken today outside of where we were in Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood at the time!
The place was an un-rented back alley apartment -- you really could not get into it from the front of the building. Legend has it that the space had rented for about 15 years for some, let’s just say unseemly business -- but the tenant left mysteriously one day, and the landlord had trouble renting the place to an upstart record selling biz.
The place was two rooms, with a galley kitchen and bathroom -- no air conditioning, almost no air flow, but very cheap. We had about four electrical outlets, but only had one computer, so that was fine. We quickly outgrew the space within our first year there (we'd also had something of a violent break-in attempt) -- but Hyde Park was very expensive to rent anything like a real storefront or office, so we moved to Wicker Park in September of 1997, which was oddly cheaper!
The photos are of the front of the building (which we couldn’t use) the back where the dumpsters are (more familiar to your Dusty Groove-rs than the front), and the side alley that you had to go through to get to our office -- only off the alley. So that’s how we started! (To be continued...)
